A rare sighting indeed. Aren't UK pigeons a protected species? Thought I saw a bulletin in the Audubon Society Magazine...

...What's in a name?

Even shrunk for posting it's still a great shot.

Hey thanks for the kind comments guys - it's only a Pigeon at the end of the day ~ nice of him to stop there for a moment.
So next I have a Duck for you - this IS a Duck, not a Goose!!
Anyone got any idea what sort of Duck because I haven't.

Yup. That was interesting, as your pigeon looks more like a dove (I think they are in the same family). But I'm no Ornithologist (heck I can barely spell it).

I dunno. Looks kind-of like Donald Trump though (nice feather-over). Maybe it is one of these guys. I think your duck has a different doo, but close.

These are our birds. Beats two in the bush! My wife hates this picture. Do you know how hard that trick is to teach to an eight year old?! (Now ten).

Uh... Kornhauser...as interesting as that might be, and sort-of, on-topic, I think it is against the posting rules and guidelines.

Thanks. I took several nice bird photos that day, using my Canon S1. I was surprised to see how fat that pigeon was though.

This is a duck photo I took when I was in Swansea's Brynmill Park one day, using my old Olympus C200Z, sometime in 2002.

Sadly, someone must have complained and now that picture has been removed. Drops the tone of the forum? Really, it's people's lack of sense of humor that hampers creativity.

You didn't like the picture, say it. Discussing your minute point on how I raise a child is none of your concern. You're comments are no sooner welcome in this forum as was the comments over the opinions of that picture, or even the picture itself.

Whether you agree or disagree with others over this - it happens ~ someone submits something that others dislike for one reason or another, or someone submits something in the wrong place.... whatever. Best to leave it and move on - we value your photos and input. I think we all need to try to be sensitive to the general mood and character of the Forum :)

Agree with Geoff. I think when we comment on photos, we have to be sensitive to the moods and feelings of other members here. When in doubt, be nice. Don't say nasty things and all will be peaceful. :)

I can't believe we haven't started a bird thread. A little harder to shoot than flowers and lighthouses. But most times worth the effort. Ducks and Geese are allowed. ;)

If I'm not mistaken this is a Cactus Wren pearched atop his/her "high-rise" condo. (f8, 1/250, ISO200, 125mm, Sigma 18-125) If you would like to see the condo and the neighborhood...

To be honest, up close and personal, neither had I. This one was pretty fearless, the rest split by the time I got within 20 feet, but then who is going to climb up there an get him/her? This particular Suguaro was about 15-20 feet tall and was home to at least 10 nesting birds.

I though about editing the cactus in the upper right corner, but decided to keep it in for character.

Here is another resident perched at the opening to one of the 10 nesting holes.

Many thanks for that. The Sonoran Desert is a pretty awsome place. Unfortunately I spend far too little time actually in the "wild desert" part. I may start riding horses again, just for that purpose.

Almost every dusk the sky is ablaze. Add clouds it becomes a "sailors delight". The state flag pretty much says it all. Not to wander too far off topic, but this is a typical example. One of the few shots that turned out using the Tamron 28-300 (I just didn't have the patience to fool with it).

It is very highly cropped (you don't want to see my washing hanging on the rest of the washing line do you)

It was the 18-70mm kit lens I'd just finished unpacking the camera and lens when this little fella turn up to see what was going on.

Thanks. Like I said, good shot, sans washline. ;) Especially right out of the box.

We have a version of the blackbird here called the cow bird. I'll try and get a shot of one. They frequent the area where I live due to the small dairies and horse farms, but they are kind of "skitish" around people.

Spending the weekend in the Pt. Reyes area gave me quite an appreciation of wildlife. I was able to get some decent to excellent shots of many birds. I'll post two of my favorites because I took both shots only 5 minutes apart with my FZ15. They were taken at Bodega Head (40 miles north of Pt. Reyes maybe).

This first shot is of a Golden-crowned sparrow. I was walking the head and caught this bird out of my eye and snapped a shot. I think the zoom was at an equvialent of 300 mm or so. It wasn't quite a 10X zoom on the FZ15. The bird was quite close.

... after that sparrow flew away, I walked forward only to find a Great Blue Heron standing on the trail. It let me approach to an extent. As I got closer it flew around me and stood on the path behind me. That was good because the first shots I took, the bird was too much in the sun. The second landing also gave me a chance to catch the bird in flight when it took off again. The shot below is when the bird took off. This heron is quite a big bird. No zoom at all with my FZ15.

That's quite a difference in bird size in a matter of maybe 100 feet.

Looks like a pose to me. See waht a little bird seed bribe can do? Good shot of an otherwise skitish bird. Looks like it should be in a bird guide book.

Over the 3 days I was over there I couldn't believe how many times birds seemed to pose for me. That heron stood there for quite a while before it flew walking at me away from me, sideways etc... That little sparrow turned like that just as I was ready to snap the photo. Even a whale shot (posted in another thread) seemed perfect.

I also have to laugh because I had a dozen shots of this turkey vulture (down the hill from the sparrow and heron) that was sitting on a post. As I sat up to take some shots, it spread its wings and turned 90 degrees from side to side as if to give me a a variety of poses to choose from. It must have been stretching because it never moved and promptly went back to sleep. Never-the-less, I got some great bird shots.

Here is the Turkey Vulture and a Lesser Goldfinch. The Goldfinches never sit still long enough or close enough like that sparrow (although that was a rare instance too). Both of these birds were quite far. I think both shots I'm posting were in the digital zoom on my FZ15. I always take a couple digital zoom shots with all the full optical zoom to see whether they will be worth cropping for 4 X 6's or 5 X 7's prints later on. However, I haven't done that yet, so here are the digitally zoomed shots.

Sometimes you just get lucky, and are in the right place at the right time. This Canyon Raven (Grand Canyon) followed me as soon as the camera came out. I didn't need a bribe as he/she already had a beak full.

Thanks - I got lucky with the timing - I took 10 shots of the guy feeding the gulls, and 2 of them turned out.

This fellow caught my eye as I was walking back from shooting some other stuff. When I first saw him he was on the ground tumbling and I didn't know if he had caught something or there were 2 of them mating. I think the poor guy has a broke/hurt wing as you can tell his left wing seems to sit higher and a different angle. He never changed his expression the whole time I was shooting him, only to keep his eyes on me.

Great shot.

The eyes got me. His expression never changed and he was constantly watching me. I probably got within 10' of him and I was a little nervous that he might charge me. 1 minute later and I would have missed him. Just caught him as he hit the ground out of the corner of my eye. Right place and time for once :) . Thanks for your nice comment.

One last shot for the day... This is another shot I took while in San Diego.. at the San Diego Zoo. I know it isn't quite the same as getting a good bird in the wild, but how many times do you see an Andean Condor anyway. I've always been fascinated by Condors. I saw a California Condor once in the wild not far from my school in San Luis Obispo. Unfortunately, it wasn't supposed to be where it was (interacting with people) and it had to be brought back into captivity.

California Condors are highly endagered. I remember that at one point there weren't any in the wild. They were down to about 60 if I remember right, and they were all brought into captivity to try and save the species. I think they are now over 200, although I'm not sure if that is total, in the wild, etc... They look similar to the Andean Condor below only they have no white coloring.

I think the Andean Condor is slightly bigger with a wingspan that can exceed 10 ft. The California Condor is always less than 10 ft in wing span.

Thanks for that picture. In my 3 trips to The Grand Canyon I have never seen one, but there are supposed to be about 50 in the area (Arizona, Utah, and Nevada). So this was truely a lucky sighting, as I think they hang out primarily in the North Canyon up by Vermillion Cliffs.

I'll have to keep a lookout for them the next time I'm up there.

SOD I love your Great Blue Heron shot. I had posted one taking off a couple of weeks ago. They are truly awesome birds. I see them often around where I live because of the numerous wildlife areas but not as often as I see snowy egrets, which are also awesome birds. Sadly, I don't take photos around here, although I plan on documenting all the birds that live around me.

Anyway here is a shot of the heron I shot before standing on the trail I was hiking on.

Great shots everyone - really envy those close up lenses of your.

Here are some flamingos.
Canon A80, no flash, handheld, Zoom, Ap f/7.1, Exp 1/500s, exposure compensation -0.67. Amazing how just a couple of notches down on the exposure prevents blow out. Composition not very good - there were just too many of them and they seem to like to flock together. So no matter what you do there are legs and beaks everywhere :)

Wombat

I think you would be surprised at what this picture looks like printed at 8 x 10 (or larger). And a great title..."Legs and Beaks". Almost an abstract.

I have seen several geese on this thread, but don't remember seeing a gosling. This is a Canadian Gosling (hey) ... grubbing. There were about a dozen with parental supervision near by. 20 minutes later they were gone. Taken in Beaverton, OR about a week ago.

:) Nest was only shoulder high so no ladder needed.

Now the Mourning Doves nest did require a step-ladder. Their nest became a yearly event in the front yard for five years so I'd check it out on a daily basis.

The picture of the fledging & parent dove was taken just after the fledging jumped/(flew a little) from nest to the limb about five feet away. The parent dove at first landed beside him and then leaned against him to provide a steadying support. They remained for just a couple of minutes before both flew off.

Great picture! In the honored tradition of Cold Snails 1.3MP squirel shots.

For those unfamiliar with the Oly 2100UZ it's a 2MP (10X) unstabilized Ultra Zoom, circa late 2000.

It is Stabilized :) with AF Low-Light Assist, Infrared Remote with zoom & shutter control, Lens doesn't retract so it is ready to shoot the moment turned on (settings will stay where left when turned off - no extending lens from wide-angle and having to refocus), Manual Focus available with distance scale, Manual Settings for Aperture/Shutter (if desired).

Thanks, phistio. Probably correct on the contrast. I try not to fiddle with the pics too much. I particularly want to capture the detail of the feathers and eye in the birds (one of the reasons I sold the Panasonic FZ1(2) and kept the UZ). I hestitated adding contrast as I feared it may darken the dark feathers to the point of just having a dark blob rather than the individual feathers under the neck area.

An aside to the story...threw a towel over him (he was trying to fly through a closed window). Not being a huge bird I picked him up bare-handed. That's a no-no! Those talons pierced into my finger. I saw why once a creature is snagged by one of these there is no shaking free - those claws sink in like a fish hook - go in and curve upwards. Had to put towel over his eyes and pull each claw out individually. You could have heard me scream a block away when he did this!

No, but I have both the Eastern Region and Western Region of the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds which has excellent photos of various birds. I live outside city limits and have been feeding/photographing birds which come to our yard to feed for years. When I got the C2100UZ back in '00 or '01, birdwatching became fun!

I'm currently working at a farm (a special kind I believe is mainly found here in Sweden - one that aims to educate children on how to interact with animals) and brought my camera for a day... it's a bit easier for me since I don't have to worry about them suddenly flying away. I've found the only way to get a great pose is by accident. When I have the subject, I shoot in rapid fire. With SHQ that is only about five shots. In HQ I can get seventeen. 98% of shots aren't worth saving! Maybe that's why I'm nearing 16,000 shots on this camera!!! :)

Here is a shot taken about 2 weeks ago around Anthem, AZ. Unfortunately My main computer is down for maintenence so the cropped and upsampled version is not available yet.

These are Cactus Wren Chicks nested in, of all places, a Saguaro Cactus. I have a couple more but they need a little work as these were taken at a distance and looking up about 15 feet. A good reason to invest in the Sigma 18-200 (this was taken with the 18-125).
