Mine is not as colourfull - just as I was walking home recently..

Hey,
Very nice cloud photos Geoff and Gary! Great colors and composition in both. Here's my excuse for clouds taken a long time ago, critique welcome--

Andrew - I like your photo, I hope you don't mind - I have slightly rotated it and tweaked it in Serif - I have two versions for you to inspect - please don't be offended - it's just a bit of experimentation and at the end of the day once you play in a graphics package - I think it's very much a matter of personal interpretation so I appologise if I ruin the effect in your opinion - let me know what you think...

Cloud over peak at Yosemite - taken with the Olympus C-740UZ focal length will need a maths expert to sort out properly as I am a bit dyslexic - 38 - 380 is 6.3 - 63. This was taken at 19.6 - I make it about 118mm by a rough calculation.? - F6.3 apperture, Shutter 1/800th (for those who like to know).
Comments welcome. Photo has been resized, compressed down and ever so slightly sharpened to restore some of the orig appearance of the full size image.

On a flight from Atlanta to Chicago.
I thought about collecting all of my flight shots in one gallery, but it is a daunting task as I discovered about 2500 pictures over the past 8 years and 1 million+ air miles.
I never get tired of the changing view (always get a window seat). It can be specatcular. Especially dodging thunder storms with 50,000 foot columns.
Nice shot! How about some camera info?

Camera is the Canon 20D, Tv 1/1250, Av 5. I love this camera! :D
It is Wembury bay in Plymouth UK. it is a beautiful place! It has just been saved from being built upon by the national trust which is good!
Thanks again, it is really good to get such positive feedback from a proffesional photographer! :)

I used my Sony W1 on Auto and that's about all I remember.
We were on a job in Pottsville, Pa. and drove to Philly for the flight to Atlanta Heartsfield. I did get some nice shots of the sun coming up over the tarmac as our plane waited in line (is that legal any more?).

Do any of you guys use some type of polarizer filter when you shoot clouds to get better color and saturation.

Not a professional photographer, meaning I don't make my full-time living in photography as is the case with most here. Maybe advanced amature. But many of us have been shooting for a long time and do sell the occasional print or portrait, so we have been criticised by the best.
But a good picture is a good picture.

I don't know too many people outside of PA that know that Yeungling is the oldest active brewery in the United States (circa 1829). I spent a lot of time in PA. Mostly in Lancaster (Amish country), and Milford up on the Delaware watershed.
But I still prefer Bridgeport IPA and Full Sail Pale Ale. Ahhh Oregon Microbrews. I'm drinking a Bridgeport IPA right now. Darn. Empty. End of post....
P.S. I shoot out of the window all the time. Never an objection.

This is a non digital picture overlooking Lake Derwent Water in the Lake District, Uk. I know its not really of sky, but I think that the mist over the hill you can see is rain. I have another photo of a landscape where it is raining in one half of the picture and not in another! Unfortunately its not on my computer and I can't scan it in.

Phil, I love that shot of El Capitan. I was in a similar situation once in Yosemite. It was more towards spring, so no snow. It was March and we had a camping trip. Arrived at Yosemite, and it was all in the clouds. However, they burned off quite a bit revealing some great shots (like the shot you posted).
I tell you, it was the best trip to Yosemite I ever had. The valley was deserted. So many people cancelled their trips and reservations, and it was awesome to be in such a gorgeous place that was actually quiet and peaceful.
Once again... That is an awesome shot.

Erik your time at Yosemite sounds very similar to ours this March. It was snowing hard when we arrived. The next day was very cloudy & wet hence the El Capitan shot but the day we left the sun came out & the clouds had lifted leaving blue skies & grey rocks with white snow & waterfalls. Absolutely beautiful but somehow the photographs I took didn't quite capture the magic of the moment. As you can see below. First taken on the C40Z at f8,1/400s, & 8mm focal length. The second taken with my new panasonic FZ20 at f8,1/500s & 13mm focal length. The clouds here are suplemented by slightly washed out vapour trails hence the beamed look. I was dissapointed with the sharpness of the photographs generally especially with the FZ20 which I had expected to be much better (Geof Chandlers waterfall shots on the waterfall thread are much sharper than all my FZ20 ones). I suspect it is the photographer not the camera & more familiarity is needed. I'll keep trying but any tips appreciated.

Well I like these pics - thanks for the complemets, my pics were a mixture of Olympus C-740 & Minolta A-200, with the sharpness and contrast on the Olympus turned down as it is set up over sharp contrasty and everything at default.
Your second pic is a very difficult one. Were I taking that on the A-200 I would reduce the contrast and increase the Saturation and maybe over expose a tiny bit - probably do 3 shots at different exposures and choose the most pleasing - then maybe even after a touch of tweaking in curves to bring out the shadow detail a little. Mostly, however, I prefer to get it as right as possible straight off the camera if possible

Great cloud pics everyone!!!
Here's a shot I took about 3 years ago after returning from my honeymoon. I don't know if you can classify it as a "Sunrise" shot or a "Clouds" shot, so it's both...hehe. It was taken standing on the cruise boat in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Camera at the time was the Nikon Coolpix 775.

Ok... I did recognize the lake... I wasn't sure which one, but I camped along that lake for a few days, 13 years ago... I think it even looked like that a bit with the clouds when I was there.
My family and I were actually there to see the hall of fame among other things. Upstate New York is gorgeous. I'm from California, and we have great lakes, but they are usually (not always) resevoirs, and they don't always look to "real".
Again, nice photo.

I really like your pic but i have to say that I'm mostly disapointed with centered shots.
I mean vertical centering. I think that when you give more importance to one half of the photo, it's giving more strength to this part when it's not centered but for ex. 1/3 vs 2/3.
Here's what i mean, to strenghten the "Cloudy sky" (sorry i used your pic as an exemple)
http://img17.echo.cx/img17/5100/otsegolakeclouds6pa.jpg
It makes my eyes fall into this great cloudy sky much more than when only centered.
Or if i want to focus on this huge lake area :

I apologize again for using your pic, but i just wanted to explain my feelings about it and hear what you think about ;)
I agree and like what you did to the pictures. The ones you redid look much better. This is my first real digi cam and I am just starting to learn about post processing. Still got a long way to go, and I will keep your advise handy for the next time. Thanks.
erik,

i'd like to try it, but i cant as i only own a compact DC....
But sometimes i try to use some in photoshop plug-ins to densify sky.
@Noodlez : wonderful color contrast, but i'd have liked it more wide. I think trees are badly cropped...
