Sony's W7 with Smart Zoom

I just purchased the Sony DSC-W7 and find the picture quality and VGA fine vedio quality excellent, but have not achieved good results using the "Smart Zoom" feature. I especially have low quality images at VGA settings with the 14X zoom. I have tried this feature with and without a tripod. My initial interest was in VGA frames at 14X for computer and DVD slide shows. Is there a trick to using the full utility of "Smart Zoom" or is "Smart Zoom" just another gimmick? Any tips and/or advise would be appreciated.

The Smart Zoom - does it include some kind of digital zoom? If so, then the pictures will definitely turn out badly. It should be based on optical zoom for best results.

Try using it at x11 zoom and VGA. Please let us know the result.
