Here is something I was just fooling around with. I couldnt get the whole flower in the shot at the particular macro setting I was on, so I decided to make a panorama. This picture was created from 14 different photos all joined together in PS. Just a tip for anyone that wants to try this...make sure you have TONS of ram and hard drive space before starting. PS chugs chronically if you dont. The original was 34x32 inches and around 440 mb.
I took all the pictures hand-held with my SD500. I'm sure I could make a better photo if I used a tripod or something to steady the camera. There is a bit of blurring where some of the photos were joined, but overall I was suprised at how well it came out.
Enjoy and please tell me what you think. If anyone has ever done a macro panorama, please post it here. Maybe start a thread.

Hey good job and it kinda amazes me the Macro quality that these PS cameras can put out. Even my A95 does a good job. Nice to have the added feature over the Film based PS's.

WesWow! What a great idea...you are really exploring the limits of the SD500. Gary should gather this one up for his "tips" project. Very cool indeed...

Thanks so much for the comments everyone. I had never heard of anyone trying this and when I just couldn't get the whole flower in one picture, I thought why not try it. If photoshop can join normal landscape photos into a panorama, why can't it join macro photos just as well? As I said, I was pretty suprised how well it turned out for all 14 pictures being hand-held.
I would love to see someone else try this out. Please post here if you do. I may have to give it another go with a mini-tripod.
Just a tip for those that want to try macro panoramas. Make sure you get a very sharp middle photo. It seems to work out better and look better if the very center is spot-on sharp. You can always fudge the edges a bit like I did on this one.

Nicely joined, and the end result has great colors, good sharpness across the flower. Good job!

I would say you have done something simple amazing !
Nice shot. Just curious - whwat setting or conditions prevented you from getting whole flower in frame atonce ?

Bluedog,
Dgitial camera wtih small sensors (ex P&S types) have dynamic advantage of great DOF suitable for macro photography over camera with large sensors (like DSLR's)
This is a great advantage when it comes to macro's & a disadvantage when it comes to portraits, you simply dont have a shallow DOF to create background blur..
