The Rules
Post any photos of food, restaurants, dining, anything related to food and eating. Make us all hungry with your enticing photos! If the picture makes you salivate, it's a good one.
Many of the earlier photo links are broken. I recommend skipping to pages 12 and onwards to see our latest works.

USDA Choice New York Steak Teriyaki
This place really makes nice stuff. They use USDA Choice NY Steak for their "Beef Teriyaki" and cook it to order (medium rare is best of course!). Notice the grill marks. This is the best BT I've had in the Bay Area by far.

Toro - Fatty Tuna Belly
This is the highest grade of Toro and costs $10 a pop. Yes , $10.
For you sushi lovers, Toro is graded according to its fattiness. This one sits at the top at about 50% fat content. Below that is chutoro which has about half the fat. At the bottom is standard toro which has even less. It really is worth every penny to get the good stuff. :)

Uni - Sea Urchin Roe
Good Uni tends to have a pumpkin golden color like the on in this picture. It should hold together well and should have a creamy consistency. The best uni takes on the flavor of its environment and should NEVER be bitter.

Yep, it's hard to take indoor, low light pictures with our old manual-controls-less 2 Megapixel cameras. I can see in the beet picture, that your camera does the exact same thing as mine if I'm not ultra careful. It tries to compensate for the funky lighting situation and ends up making a mess of itself, filling in all the shadows with that blue. The best I can do is set the WB to "flourescent" which isn't perfect, but helps a little.

Ah, don't make me hungry so soon after dinner! :D
Macro works very well on small dishes like sushi, and it brings out the details in the texture and appearance of the food, the aspects of the photo that stimulate the brain and cause salivation and hunger.
That's a good first shot. Maybe you could have tried playing around with the angle and shot even more level with the sushi rolls? I think that that would add more physical dimension and make the sushi jump straight out of the screen.
I look forward to your future food shots. :)
Maybe you could have tried playing around with the angle and shot even more level with the sushi rolls? I think that that would add more physical dimension and make the sushi jump straight out of the screen.I tried that as well (see below), although the shot has a few technical problems that I have noticed and that I have learned from. I basically threw the sushi rolls on the plate and shot. But with a little more care I could have done better...for instance the lighting...that front shadow shouldn't be there, I should've used some fill flash...and the DOF...I should have made sure that either all the rolls were in focus or that the back rolls were completely out-of-focus. As it is, it's too much in between. But, I am learning by practicing! Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it...:)
Since this one was at ISO 200, I had to run it through Noise Ninja. You can still see noise in the lettuce, but overall not too bad...

This sounds a little corny, but one great resource when figuring how to pose these shots is to look at cookbooks and the fancier restaurant menus that actually show the food. You won't always have the luxury of being able to set things up and arrange things, but having several basic "templates" in your head does help a lot for me.

When the it's Italian food or something alone those lines, I like to deliberately "warm" up the picture. for food photos, it's sometimes better to go for warm instead of neutral. Seeing reds and oranges also has been shown to stimulate hunger, while blues and greens (cold colors), make you less hungry.

Sorry about the lack of updates. For the past week or so, I've either gone to restaurants not really worth taking photos for or have eaten at home (in the previous weeks, we ate out about 5-6 times per week which is too much to stomach!). I'll probably have a new set of photos this weekend.
I encourage you all to contribute some more food/restaurant photos. It's a challenging but fun subject to shoot!

What settings are you shooting at? Your photos appear to be quite oversaturated, or is this done intentionally?
jussi
06-23-2005, 02:09 AM
Yes. It is actually deliberate. I chose the Panasonic FZ5 setting 'vivid' for colour...and it over staturates which I find nice for these pics especially the strawberries. I then even deepened the red in photoshop in selective colour.
I was not after natural look but vibrant colours.
Here is a black and white of the same strawberries:

Rex914

Yes, I pay for everything, and I get to eat it. I wouldn't be doing this just to take the pictures. :D
This one's screwed up by my own fault (sausage got half cut off), but it came out sharp at least. I should have removed that aqua paper underneath the plate, something I neglected to do in my haste. The result is some funky color balancing.

Yum Yum JTL !!
Well - I see this thread is ticking over very slowly, but still going
never the less.
I have been thinking it would be good to take more food photos myself.
Anyway.
Today, my wife went into the garden and picked some more of our tiny
tomatoes (very small, smaller than the usual cherry ones - about 1.5cm across!). The she picked a coupe of chillies (I'm the oly one who eats them!!)
and also some grapes off the vine. She dumped them on the kitchen work
surface and left them there.
I came along an hour or so later and saw them as a picture (well I would I suppose!)
So I now have several versions - but I quite liked this treatment of the arrangement -
comments very welcome :-

I'm sorry about my recent (or ongoing) lack of contributions to this thread. Part of it is because we dine out less now and the other part of it is that when I did have something interesting to shoot, it was in a place that didn't cater well to my camera's limitations (formal restaurants, flash is prohibited/greatly frowned upon yet it's the only means I have for taking shots ATM). In other words, until I get a real camera, I can't offer much more than I already have.

This is one of many product shots I did for a friend's new restaurant today; he's making a website and illustrated menu and the photos will go in both places. I used a key flash (slave) off to the right, a reflector on left, plus a fill flash on-camera (with Lightsphere II). I hadn't used the slave flash in many years so I've got to back and read the flash instructions again, because I sure didn't get the light balance just the way I wanted, but my friend got what he paid for (I did it gratis). Hope he's not too disappointed.

It's a good first attempt at this stuff, and I'll admit that I don't have the equipment required to develop more sophisticated techniques (but I'm resourceful with what I have!). Here are a few pointers in case you didn't catch them yourself.
- I'm a perfectionist, and one of the first things I look for is a spotless plate. There are two flecks of stray chocolate on the outer rim of the plate. ;)
- The Whipped Cream detracts from the pie itself. I also don't like how it melds with the plate.
- As you said already, the light balance could use tweaking.
- Finally, this is more subjective, but I feel that changing your angle could have captured an even better view, something with more "3D"ness and depth to it.
Don't be discouraged by my nitpicking though. It's a good first shot. Food photography is a lot about getting things exactly right, and while there are no set rules, you'll know when you got something spot on or not.
Happy shooting. :D
Must be snack time because I'm really salavating over the items you guys are posting around here.

Hey Rex...no new food shots? :D
Well time to wake up this thread...
Gray Kunz's (former Lespanase, currently Cafe Gray) short rib recipe...simply out-of-this-world good. Of course, I think I make it even better than he does. Served with a 2000 Chateau Margaux (I know...it's a little early).

Here are a few food shots that I took this weekend. It feels like it's been forever since I last posted some up. As a reminder, I am *still* working with my DC3400.
This first one is from the Fish Hopper restaurant in Monterey. It's been several years since we last dined there. While the prices have shot through the roof, the food is thankfully just as good as before, and they make the best Fried Calamari around.

This is a bit better than the Fish 'n Chips shot I had last year though I think I could do better.

Crawfish in South Louisiana. Man were they good!
The food safety chemist that I am never rests.... Never mind their taste - they were quite a colour. Do you happen to know if they were wild caught or farmed ?
I have been on shrimp farms in SE Asia and Central America. Their products aren't as brightly coloured - but maybe in the US where feed costs are likely to be less of an issue maybe there's more syntheitic colourant added to their diets. Alternatively are they like lobsters - blueish turning orange/red after cooking??
Boring, I know -- but knowing a bit about this osrt of thing is a bit of a a sideline in my day-to-day work
American Nomad

Glenn, I believe these were farmed in south Louisiana. However, farmed or wild, the color is the same. Very much like a small lobster or large shrimp, they are more of a grey color when live but turn to this vibrant red after cooking. Other ingrediants thrown into the pot, lemon corn on the cob, new potatoes and sausage, help with the appearance or contrast of color.
There was no pp ont that photo. This is my brother and his son-in-law dumping them out of the pot.

I was pretty lucky today to be able to shoot this handheld, no flash, semi-low light. In a break from my normal habit, I applied some USM, bumped up the saturation a bit, worked the levels a bit, used Neat Image, etc.
It's dim sum, and it's a Rice Noodle Crepe stuffed with Chicken and Bitter Melon. Certainly a step more adventurous than the standard fare which is either BBQ Pork, Shrimp or Beef.

Just to balance the subject matter a bit (too much Chinese food even for my taste!), I've dug up some photos from last year that I didn't post-process.
Here's one from Thomas Keller's Bouchon.
It's a delicious sausage called Boudin Blanc, and it's typically made using pork and veal. It's a delicate and tender but very flavorful sausage.

Usually, there's no reaction since I'm using a point and shoot for these and I'm discreet about it (no flash, little noise). I imagine that if I whipped out a DSLR, I would provoke more reaction, good or bad. :P
However, I did strike up a conversation when I started shooting photos of the chef at the teppanyaki restaurant though since it's probably the first time he's had that happen. :)

From tonight's dinner. All in all, these shots make me think that IS or ISO boosting might really come in handy down the line... Anyways, on to the descriptions.
Chicken Karaage is a simple dish where you take chunks of chicken thigh meat and marinate them in a ginger infused soy sauce (read: pulverize some fresh ginger and mix it into soy sauce). Then coat with your favorite batter, breadcrumbs, or panko and deep fry.
http://gallery.gureporter.com/d/76-2/Karaage.jpg

I'm rather fond of sausages. What were these sausages made of? :)
--------------------------------------
Here are three photos from lunch. Dinner was problematic since the camera errored out (wouldn't retract lens), causing me to lose my photos for that.
This first one is Honey Glazed BBQ Pork (Hong Kong style). Pork tenderloin is basted with soy sauce and spices and then roasted over a fire to give it its distinctive red color. The final touch is a dab of honey to give it a sweet taste.
http://gallery.gureporter.com/d/86-2/CharSiu2.jpg
The second one is Braised E-Fu Noodles with Enoki Mushrooms and Dried Scallops. E-Fu noodles are a special kind of egg noodle that's deep fried at first and then dried. Then, when the dish is actually prepared, the noodles are briefly blanched in boiling water before hitting the wok. This recipe adds yellow chives, enoki mushrooms and dried scallops. The more common recipe uses crab meat.

Finally, more Wonton Noodle Soup. Although I like my earlier photo better, these sure tasted better than the dish in that photo. ;)

4 Photos from tonight's dinner. Although there's some shake as usual, I'm pleased generally with how they came out, at least composition-wise.
If you've been following, you'll notice by now that I rather like getting up and close with the food. I do break a few rules like cropping out the plate and blah blah blah, but I do this for two reasons.
1) It's an interesting perspective. Top down tends to be boring for most subjects. It works well in some cases, but taking it from a different angle lends depth. Especially photo #2 is a case where taking it from an "in your face" angle made the picture interesting, at least for me.
2) The more technical reason is because the camera can't resolve much detail, so this is the only way where I can pull in a lot of detail. If I didn't use close-up mode, the pictures wouldn't have nearly as much detail and texture to them.

Time for some Dim Sum! This is one of many dishes I ate today for lunch.
This classic dim sum dish consists of the wrapping and the stuffing. The stuffing is prepared from minced pork and a variety of seasonings. It's then wrapped up in a flour wrapping and then steamed until the stuffing is juicy and fully cooked. It's almost always served with red vinegar on the side.

This is another Dim Sum selection from the same meal from a few days ago.
Unlike Western-style meatballs, these meatballs are less dense, less firm and more airy and have a soft, creamier texture. Flavor-wise, they are more intense, so they tend to be eaten in smaller amounts (half is about right). This meatball is made using ground beef, baking soda to give it that soft, tenderized texture, cilantro, a dash of citrus peel/zest and minced turnips for a little crunch. The final touch is the use of sheets of beancurd to prevent the meatballs from sticking to the plate.

Tonight was presented some of the most difficult challenges to me today for a variety of reasons, but to cut to the chase, lighting was very poor as expected, leaving me with 1/6 second shutter speeds, just as I had predicted. Self timer wouldn't work because I had absolutely no means of propping the camera (at the angle I wanted).
I won't say that these photos are tack sharp because they aren't. That said, they are comparable to the set of photos I posted about 2 weeks ago which I really liked. I don't have flashy gear, so I just have to make due with what I've got and to let the composition and beautiful food make up a bit for the lack of sharpness.
(As a sidnote, is there software that can correct minor shake like this?)
So with that little warning, here's what I got.
This first one is a 2 pound bone-in Ribeye steak. It was cooked beautifully to order and was delicious. We did not finish it. I cut off the bone in haste because I didn't want the (rather expensive) food to get cold.
http://gallery.gureporter.com/d/359-2/Ribeye.jpg
This second dish is a Petite Filet Mignon which was also nicely cooked to order. It was the best dish of the meal with the meat melting in the mouth. The green oil in both dishes is basil oil to lend fragrance.
http://gallery.gureporter.com/d/344-2/Filet-Mignon.jpg
The dessert requires a little explanation because there's a lot going on. It consists of Creme Brulee, Raspberries soaked in Grand Marnier sprinkled with 24 Karat Gold Flakes and Chocolate Dipped Strawberries. Delightful and imaginative. I do not know why the photo has the appearance of being flashed (perhaps the light source's falloff makes it appear that way), but it surely wasn't.

Egg Custard Tart
Though I'm not happy with the blue shadows (which I've let be since it's not in the food :p), I love the angle I took on this, much better than my previous attempts for this dish. The angle I chose accentuates the triangular formation of the tarts.

I did not like how the lighting was (giving that awkward shadow), but given that the restaurant was excruciatingly cramped, I didn't bother trying other angles because I couldn't. I also didn't like how I chopped off the very top of the dish in my haste.
Anyways, this burger is from a restaurant that lets you customize everything in the burger, and I mean everything. Custom bun, custom patty, custom condiments and custom toppings. No Kobe patties or foie gras in this one, but for $6.95 (includes 4 toppings), it's a good deal.

This is my third attempt at this dish. There are several features of this dish which make it difficult to photograph.
1) Steam. It is always served steaming hot, and steam kills contrast and can do other strange things.
2) The other problem is that the wrapper can vary from translucent (good) to white (bad). If it's white, it's a boring dish to photogrph because you can't see what's inside.
3) This dish can be easily overexposed, blowing out the wrapper and making it seem all white.
Today, I fared better. I underexposed the shot and got everything mostly right.
http://gallery.gureporter.com/d/433-2/ShrimpDumplings_001.jpg
On a more humorous note, I saw a couple wield a point and shoot and a Nikon D50, and they took rounds standing up and shooting their food. Guess I'm not the only one of the block doing this. Moreover, I wouldn't be the only crazy person using a DSLR to shoot restaurant food down the line :)

Same meal as the post above.
This is probably the weirdest food item posted up here so far. It's pretty popular, but I'm not too hot over it because it's troublesome to eat.
The dish is Chicken Feet, and you might ask, how are chicken feet edible? Its basically no meat and all skin. It tends to be braised in a chili black bean sauce and tastes pretty good, but it's quite a chore to eat which is why I don't like it much.

Rex- You're food photos are always great although I must say I prefer you dead cattle on a plate or served with cheese on a bun to the chinese food ;)
I don't know about others, but I certainly don't remember meals like this when I was going to college. Lots of Dominos boxes and empty beer bottles...

I posted this in the Canon SLR thread also. Didn't know there was a food thread here. If this breaks the rules, let me know & I will pull it.
I had my first paid photo shoot 09/26 for a sushi restaurant. I am pretty happy with the result. This was my first real experience using a flash and bouncing light. They aren't perfect, but the client was very happy.
Things to remember or know about me and this shoot:
-I have only been shooting for 4 mths
-I have never shot with an external flash. Only had 1 attempt with onboard mini pop-up flash
-Just got the flash and transmitter on the Thursday before the shoot
-Food was set on-top of a teppanyaki table. Vent hood was about 4 feet from the top of the table. I put foam core in the vent hood. Had the flash mounted on a tripod at the edge of one side of the table pointed up to the foam core. I had someone stand on the other side of the table from the flash with another piece of foam core to reflect some light.
-Client wanted the black background and preferred having some shadows.
For what I had to work with, I am pleased. They are not perfect what so ever, but client is ecstatic. (and I got a flash and transmitter out of the deal!!!)
I am still not sure how good they "really" look since all my editing is still done on an uncalibrated laptop monitor.
All shot with 17-40 L, Speedlight 580ex with transmitter (my pay of flash and transmitter).

Just for fun I tried to take a photo of some food but the photo turned out to be a real lemon :p
Nikon 3100 as it was just a quick fun shot.

These are very good photos given the circumstances the equipment. Are they perfect? No, there are some quibbles I have (more with how the restaurant styled which is not your fault at all), but these are really great shots, and as a sushi afficionado, they make my mouth water. It's great to hear that your client loved them because making them happy is priority #1, and you did exactly that.
The only shot which I take a bit of issue with is #6. The blurred out flower in the front is distracting IMO and doesn't add to an otherwise great angle.

Cakes are something I don't normally shot, so as a break from the Chinese food and main dishes, I present to you some desserts.
These are all from a high-end Japanese bakery in the area called Satura Cakes.
Caramel Mocha Cake
Caramel mousse, mocha cream, crisp chocolate base.

Yuna (Chocolate Sponge Cake)
Bittersweet chocolate sponge cake, layers of ganache made with two kinds of milk chocolate. My personal favorite of the 6 varieties I've tried so far at this shop.

I finally got around to taking some "studio shots with my new 40D.
Berry Platter:

EXIF:
Make: Canon
Model: Canon EOS 40D
Shutter Speed: 1/60 second
F Number: F/5.6
Focal Length: 135 mm
ISO Speed: 200
The berries are sitting on top of plain yogurt and a brownish plate, with black crushed velvet underneath it all. I had two umbrellas left and right of camera up pretty high. Don't remember what the lights were set to.
Green Orange Red:

Focal Length: 100 mm
ISO Speed: 200
I'm pretty sure the lights were the same as the "Berry Platter". This time the peppers are sitting on a slab of green granite.
Both were hand held because I thought I misplaced the quick release to my tripod but when we were all done and I was putting my camera away, I found it in my bag.

This my homemade vegan apple pie I baked the other day. I'm not a vegan but my neighbors are and they rub off onto me sometimes. The recipe is based from a Wait Watchers but I then modified it a bit.
For some reason the photo itself doesn't a lot for me but the pie sure did.

Just a typical photo of selective coloring. Now that I'm looking at it, I really didn't do such a great job with the b&w.
