Well, as of a couple of days ago, I now own both a K-M Z5 and a Panasonic FZ5. While I haven't done a side-by-side comparison yet, overall I think like the FZ5 slightly more than the K-M due to it's slightly less bulky size and the overall picture quality.

Two things I don't like about the Pany FZ5:
[1] The plastic housing feels really cheap compared to the K-M
and
[2] In low-light, the viewfinders are useless.

On this last point, I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts. I tried taking a picture of my dog inside late in the afternoon. It wasn't remotely dark inside (the K-M's screen could easily view the scene; the Panasonic's screen and EVF were essentially black. This along may make me go back to the K-M.

Any thoughts?

Set it on P

You either have something set wrong or a defective camera if the viewfinder goes black in the afternoon.
I have seen the viewfinder get dark but black?
In Program mode it should not even darken until you 1/2 press the shutter.

And as far as build quality ..we have vastly different preferences.
