Yes - this could be an interesting one - just for the record - what camera/lens did you use for the dragon fly?? Very good BTW

This REALLY isn't good - but at the moment it's the only digital fly I have! And it was on the wrong side of the blurry glass as well!!! I will watch out for opportunities though.. - I've got a slug? I also have a snail somewhere as well - would they count? Or are they to large for this thread.
Please keep posting everyone - this fascinates me.

The fly is blurry. But I can see its droppings very clearly.
Yes you can post anything as long as its small and its an animal.

This one may seem weird, but it is an animal. It is a Macro of one of my corals in my Reef Tank. It is actually a plate coral . I humbly submit this picture.

Now thats a mean looking coral. Reminds me of some alien lifeform from a Hollywood movie. Cool colors too.

Yup - I think the camera focused on this side of the window - which was blurry anyway - maybe it wasn't really worth it ...
Here's a slug eating a Rabbit food pellet, maybe I'll post a snail or a spider later - seew what others come up with...
Thanks for the comments.

diJ, apparantly it's called a "fly bee". That was my thoughts when i saw it too , he certainly zipped about a fair bit. This link was posted in the last thread with the strange little creature.

Agree. Hey film cameras give give great results. I love the feel of a full manual SLR. But having to wait for photos to be developed. Thats really a pain.

It was a very difficult shot because:
1. It was dark there and I didn't have tripod.
2. The grasshopper were behind the glass so I was careful not to have reflection from glass.
3. Restless nosy kids were around me  They wanted to see my LCD so I switched to EVF
I took 5 shots under BKT mode and selected the best one.
Camera: C-765 with macro (not S-macro).
Comments? Suggestions? :D
Edit: I have discovered that it is better to use EVF than LCD because in EVF you know the exact amount of light you need for your snap as LCD preview is effected by the angle of sight (you and LCD) and surrounding light. Well, this is my opinion.
oh! and one more thing. Save the image in your local HDD.
Right click on it.

here's one of a MASSIVE praying mantis that i caught in my bag when i saw it in a corridor (i was saving it's life) i took it home to my garden, relesed it, and photograhed it. the *^&^ thing repayed my kindness my promplty biting my on the finger. it's spikes were so huge they actually drew blood. while i phtographed it, it kept trying to destroy my lens and kept COMING close, rather than running away like most things ten centimetres long!

one more shot from coorg. it's some sort of bizzzare spider that mimics a mantis (i think) notice the way it holds its front two legs. i think it waits for flying insects to come and rest on the leaf, and then--ziiip---it pounces! i noticed traces of silk on the underside of the leaf, confiming that it's a spider.
Nice shot. Very interesting creature. I wouldnt have guessed its a spider. Do you have one in captivity?

i have around twenty spiders cohabiting in my room :D but it's pretty difficult to keep these wild, super specialized species indoors. many of these really speacilaed spiders feed on a narrow band of species, need exact conditions, etc, etc--so basically; not possible to keep most spiders indoors. i tired to keep a giant wood spider indoors, much to the horror of everybody (it was six inches, and built a web that was never less than four feet across) but i was eventually forced to throw it outside. (not beacause i found it's habit of spinning a web across the door irritating---it was running short of food )
i tried to keep spiders indoors so i could shoot them at leasiure, but i found it too irritating too generate a nice background. and it's not very nice to wake up witha massive spider on your face.

Mr. Phunk:
i know ALL abut focussing on beetles:
most of these awful chaps have this waxy caoting on thier cases, making it reflective, and immune to nearly every AF system i've thrown against it.
tip#1: don't go from straight up, 30 deg from the horizontal seems to be a good angle.
tip#2: crop, crop, and crop. if you have suffeicient MP, oyu can make up for a not so hot lens(which is?)
tip#3: use a flash!! i belong to the flash group; i use a flash i built myself (ok, cannibalized from another flash) and it gives me awesome results; even in total darkness.
tip#4: use an af assist beam. if you don't have the money to buy one, build it yourself. with a little bit of electronics, you can connect it to the cmaera battery, to keep things simple WARNING: EXTREME DANGER YOF SHORTING YOUR CAMERA'S ELECTRONICS. I KNOW, IT HAPPENIND TO ME ONCE.
tip#5: go slow. the slower you go, the more invisible you get. i once went so slow i got within 4 cm of a butterfly.

jeff: awesome awesome second shot!
somebody tell me that he used at least 3000 dollars worth of gear on that shot! and not with a Sony! that detail is really impresssive! not to mention the photographer getting that close!!
also, ali baba, did you keep the flash and the lens flush with the glass? becasue if you did, and if the glass wasn't that thick, you should be reflection free.
jeff31

Thank you Sigbhu for your nice compliments. Absolutly, this pic has been taken with a Sony DSC-V3 (not DSLR) + an old and low-price 130 mm lens handing in front of the camera. The pic has been croped to supress a small vigneting.

A polarizer can help on the reflections you have showing in that shot. Although, a polarizer will not help with flash reflection. It is still a great shot.

correct me is i'm wrong, but isn't the sony v3 a non-interchangable lens p&S? how do you use the lenses you mention with it?
great photo, by the way!
jeff31
05-15-2005, 02:32 AM
Yes Sigbhu, the sony V3 is a classic digital camera without interchangable lenses. But the raynox microexplorer lenses kit - CM-3500 - is provided with an universal adapter. The only constraint is that the camera must have a lens filter diameter > 52 mm. So on the Sony V3 i must have to bought a Sony VAD-VHA adapter before mounted the Raynox adapter.

impressive! is this raynox xm-3500 compatible with all systems? even with DSLRs? i would imagine it's a lot cheaper than macro lenses. (for Slrs) how much does it limit apertures and all that? does that "12x" mean 12 times???? what's the closest focussing distance?
by the way, do you use flash?

Thank you Sigbhu. I don't know if the Raynox cm-3500 kit works with all camera. I think yes but Raynox don't engage them of this point. You must have at least a zoom 3x to avoid vignetting but 4x will be better. You could use all aperture at your convenience but a low aperture give lest chromatic aberation. 12 x means 12 times or more precisely 12 diopter.
Focussing distances reduce when the magifying power increases. With the 6x lens the focussing may be around 200mm, 100 mm with the 12x and 50mm with the 24 x (too hard to use). But that depends a lot of the camera.
And another system that seems to give good results: the raynox DCR-250 close-up lens (http://www.raynox.co.jp/english/dcr/dcr250/indexdcr250eg.htm ). I've seen good results with some coolpix and the FZ20.
More informations on the the CM-3500 kit could be found at this link:
http://www.raynox.co.jp/english/35mmacc/egcm2000.htm
I've found the raynox cm-3500 kit + the sony adpapter for 140 € (around 100$). For comparison the Sony closeup lens is sold 100 € (around 75 $) with the 58mm lens adapter.
I'll post soon some shots taken with the build-in flash. It works very well in this configuration but limit the aperture to f/4 (or more open).

No Alkaphunk , all these as been taken with an additional macro (close-up) lens. The difference between the 2 configurations is with this one i keep all the resolution besause i don't need to crop.

ALKAPHUNK- is that straight off the camera? Does it go in that close - or did you crop it - either way that Nikon certainly is nice and sharp - and you certainly have a steady hand - great job!!!

Yes Geoff i croped it a bit to get in it more .
The 5900 allow me to stay around 3cm (4cm to get a lil' more focus depth)
On the test gallery (my signature) there's a shot of the bee cropped and full size to give an idea of how close you can get.

Aha - much like my C-740 then - can you change the focal length (zoom) in Macro mode?? The C-740 is fixed at equive 38mm - it works quite well. The A-200 is strange as it has either 28mm or small zoom of around 180 - 200 in macro at the wide end it's range is 30 - 60cm - not much help!! but at the tele end it's 25cm - 60Cm - which gives a decent close up - if not quite the very closest. But it is a bit strange, and normal focus is from 50cm - infinity - so the overlap is small and can result in it not wanting to focus if you are on the borderline in the wrong mode - I'm used to it now though and all I want now is an additional close up lens for the real close ups.
Yours seems to work very well for you anyway.
AlkaPhunk
05-26-2005, 05:08 AM
Yeah Geoff, same for me (as with lots of compacts cam i think) i can stay at 38mm or 41mm only these 2 positions.
I try to stay the closer i can to get focus OK and try not to move :o

as i lay awake at night, wondering how to take photos as good as jeff31, the solution struck me: use the best glass in the world. so i used a fantastic zeiss microscope, and shoved some ant exoskeletons from my assasin bugs into it. well, the lens is fantastic, but the camera that goes with the microscope is no good (2.5 MP, horribile banding, noisy)--so, here they are, still not as good as jeff31.
Sigbhu

byt the way, the previos shot shows an ant exoskeelton from my assasin bugs, showing specifically the bite mark (on the thorax), + silk threads and attachment pads.
this one is of a homopteran (a little bug that secretes honey dew from the spout at the end, on caressing by ants)

ah Badams...wondeful shot...was it taken with the kit lens? maybe you should have cropped it to exclude all no relevant areas?
also, you should resize your images (less than 800x600) that way, guys who don't have high speed ADSL internet don't have to wait frustating times to see your image, and you can use a better JPEG quality...the pic will look better. resize in photoshop, and save.. "save for web"

thanks for the kind words!
most all of these shots have been taken with a fuji finepix s602 zoom. the macro features are incredible, and most images barely need to be manipulated in photoshop. there are a few i'll pop in here that i've taken with my trusty 'ole nikon 4004 that i gave away some time ago.
i bought the fuji...(carry the one...plus two...) like May of '03. it was my second digital ever purchased. needless to say, once i went digital, i never went back to traditional.
as far as tips...well, i suppose the more you play with the manual settings of your camera and the more familiar you become with the features; the better you images start coming out.
that's the number one thing i love about DP...you can instantly see your work, and progress from there. if the f stop was wrong...guess what, one or two clicks of the dial, and you've got it.
the only other tip would be to use a tri-pod when ever you can....especially for macros.

You all have some great macro shots!!! I used to get some pretty decent ones with my P&S (Canon G5), but since I've upgraded to my Rebel, I'm not having that great success. First off, welcome to the forum. I agree, there are some excellent photos on this site. and some great people as well, always willing to help out. I have seen just recently some photos from the A520 ,and they are very good quality. Just wanted to say thanks to all you super photographers posting on this thread. Haven't got anything to post here but really enjoy browsing all your shots - full of admiration bordering on envy and edging into awe. I have to say I have given up on moving targets - I am just to creaky to pursue them and with the shutter delay on the Canon A80 they have usually buzzed off :( . I am keeping my eye out for a slow caterpillar.

How about a slow Beetle. hope you like, he wanted my camera for some reason.
Brilliant shot BE - I don't know how you manage to get them to stay still enough!
I will cerainly look into a close up lens for the A-200 at some point (once I have paid back the loan!!)
Before I went away on my course I spotted a little black beetle running across the Laminate floor - here's about the best the Oly C-740 managed, cropped a bit and resized...note the shallow DOF he wouldn't keep still so I had to use a fairly fast shutter and wide aperture. But I really don't think small Life is something I can get to grips with at the moment.
Comments?

...and this one is popped in more for fun.
The beetle was running towads me - captured this time on the A-200 which is a bit less suited to this particular type of photography...rubbish focus & Dof but it amused me.
PS - for those that don't know the normal black english beetle (& I don't know the proper name) it's not big at all - about a cm or even less, so I guess I shouldn't be hard on myself, ~ in not good light and moving about quite quickly - maybe with the A-200 I should have tried the flash - it was on 200mm after all ???...

nothing too spectacular here as this was one of my earliest of shots with my digital (3 years ago). i've learned quite a bit about my camera since then.
shot in Normal Program mode, 1/480th sec., f/8, ISO - 200 @7.8mm

great shots, it looks like he wanted your camera too.
He can have either of them - provided he swaps it for a nice dSLR!!!
Thanks for the kind comments - they were kind - these wern't great shots - but served to help the learning curve and to explore the limits of each camera. More light, close up lens for the A-200, the C-740 gets a bit larger image.
More soon

Great pics guys! Macro is so fascinating. You can pick out so many details invisible to the naked eye.
A wasp of some kind I found in my yard:

You are so right. Macro is one of my favorite kinds of photography. Like you have said, details previously unseen are vibrantly displayed in all of its beauty. Great shot of the wasp. :)

More and more better each time Bald Eagle. Technics and the camera seems to be very good mastered. If i could now give you an advice try to be attentive to the background and to the light now. No doubt you are on the good way.

I agree, the background could have been better(it was a fake leaf) and lighting was from a regular household bulb. But, i was afraid he wouldnt pose for too long, and i was right, after a couple of shots, he took off again. but, i appreciate the helpful suggestions, and very kind words.

My first attempt at this sort of thing...not nearly to the level of other shots on this thread, but practice makes perfect! These little critters move around fast! I don't know how you guys get some of these shots...

i dunno...seems like you made a great shot here. only one suggestion would be to post-manipulate the image by running it through photoshop, and doing a little anti-aliasing of the bottom left wing. but i really like the shot. nice composition!
and long ago, my Marine recruiter told me that perfect practice makes perfect...don't know why, but the saying has always stuck with me. keep up the good work!
