Monument Thread

I would like to start a monument thread.
It's a nice weather out there, so you can all find some time to go to the near-by park and take few shots of some sculptures, monuments...

This one was taken with Canon A520 (1/125sec, F/4).

We have had a Statue thread just started - I don't know if you should slip over onto that one as this is strictly a Statue, unless of course there are some monuments to follow...

The shadow is, I find, a little distracting -- but a strong compositional effect!

It's Filip Visnjic (1767-1834), a blind guslar* (what Homer is to ancient Greeks, that Filip Visnjic is to Serbian people).

The whole monument was made by Djordje Jovanovic in 1904 and is located in Krusevac, Serbia.

*guslar
plural Guslari, any of a group of popular narrative singers of the Balkans who inherit a tradition that dates from the 17th century. Guslari are among the few performers continuing the oral tradition of epic poetry in the West and serve as transmitters and interpreters of a repertory of song and epic. Most of their songs are about the era of Turkish rule and were handed down by teachers…

*gusle
also called gusla, a Balkan one-stringed bowed instrument, whose single string is made of thirty horsehairs. The string is only touched, not depressed, so that only harmonics are sounded. It is held between the legs with the long neck supported on one thigh. Today, in Serbian, the gusle is known for having a small tonal and dynamic range, being not very expressive and rather difficult to master, and used today exclusively as a support for reciting ancient epics.

Nelsons Column early October, in a rain storm. The usual Kodak DX4530, didnt see the second rainbow untill after I got it onto my laptop.

Little dark over all, but was more worried about keeping dry ;)

Nelsons column - about a ten minute walk from Buckingham palace in south west London. It was nice and sunny ten minutes before hand!

Thanks. Next time I'm in London (maybe July) I'll look it up. 99% of the time my time in London is in Heathrow on my way to Munich, Rome, or Istanbul. Even these trips are only once a year. this time I hope to spend a few days in the UK, and maybe wander up (and satgger back) to Islay in Scotland for a sample (or two). None of that highland stuff this trip. ;)
