hey everyone, is there any chance that canon will come with a new (compact) camera?? I wanted to buy the a510 but after the horrible stories of 10 sec. flash recharge i changed my mind... I'll be backpacking from november to june 2005/2006 so I do not need a new camera until november....I was kind of hoping that canon will come with a new improved (full manual control/compact) camera (for example a follow up a95) by that time, but because of all the current releases of new cameras Im not sure about that (I dont even know how many times canon brings new cameras out (once? twice?)every year.) If theres a pretty big chance then i'll wait with buying another camera if not I'll probably buy one a few months sooner..

so what do you think?

Canon plans to release 18 cameras(or something along those lines) this year, they have released 5(I think), so there are lots of other cameras coming.

I am almost certain that a follow up to the A95 will come in August or September... It may not be what you need tho, I fear that they will go from 4 AA batteries to 2 AA, thus the flash recharge time would probably be long(somewhere near the time it takes for the A510). Of course this is just speculations. But it would be a good idea to wait at least until August to see what new cameras come out and if no interesting cameras come out, the ones that interest you will probably have gone down in price.

Allow yourself AT LEAST 1 month with the camera before you leave so that u can get used to it. The A95 is a great camera, but it can be improved, I'm eager to see how they will improve it(tho I have an idea).

Also, they will go SD card. The big "if" is Digic II or not. If not, then it will surely be a worse camera in several respects than the A95...

Just for the record...I'm betting no Digic II...

I'd highly recommend going with the A95. The update will almost surely come out worse judging by how the A510/A520 have done. I don't think they'd want to make the A530 better than its brothers just for consistency.

Too bad I had to settle with the A95, hope it doest get any worse.

That's why I ended up picking up the A95 instead of waiting. I didn't like the idea of going to 2 batteries on the A510/A520, and I didn't want to switch to SD when I still have a pile of CompactFlash cards. Of course, if the new camera is better, I can always pick that up and get rid of my A95; I just didn't want to get stuck.

Well, my speculations aren't far from what you'd expect...

Smaller camera, uses 2 AA batteries, uses SD card
No upgrade on the D!GIC
4x zoom, but will remain 38mm at wide angle :(
faster lens F2.6 at wide angle instead of F2.8
still a 5mp on 1/1.8" sensor (that's actually a good thing)
Still having a rotating LCD
Similar video mode
No improvement on the ISO

I still see it as a good camera... but also as a pretty much useless update...
What I'd like to see
4AA batteries, would prefer CF(but SD is also acceptable)
D!GIC II ---> with that faster operations in general(still are acceptable for now)
4x zoom, but with at LEAST 35mm at wide angle(if less, then its better)
Faster lens(anything faster is better)
still 5mp on a larger sensor
Rotating LCD(doesn't need to be bigger than 1.8", but could perform better in low light.
similar video mode(with limits is fine, just raise the fps to at least 15 in 640x480)
A huge improvement on ISO, to make ISO 200 useable and to give the possibility for ISO 800(having noise between ISO 400 and ISO 200 of the current A95).

But I try to see things positively... If they give what I think they will, then I won't be sad I bought my A95 a year ago... if they give what I'd like, then it may be harder to refrain myself from buying it(I need to explain that I want to keep this camera for a few years, despite the fact it has flaws... I still like it).

Go with the Canon A95 (http://www.basic-digital-photography.com/canon-powershot-a95-review.html). It's the best beginner camera with manual controls to ever come out of Canon.

If your speculations are correct, then I forsee A95 envy to the discerning user, :p a bit like the A80 envy I have. :(

Well if Digic II is in their lower end SD models, then why not in A95 update? It would be pointless to me if Canon leaves out the Digic II from this update. Your guesses about No Digic II in A95 makes me wonder if the G6 update will have a DIGIC II? Thats one of the things I didn't like about G6 is that it still has Digic I.

The reason I'm not sure is because Canon is stupid... and because the A95 is sort of a entry level camera.

For the G6 its a different story, its a high end model and if they don't pput the D!GIC II in it, then they will lose more and more parts of the market. Besides the G6 has few improvements to be made and D!GIC II would really make a difference!

I think the A95 is great, except the 4 AA-batteries. I'm going on a tramping holdiday soon and want a leightweight, easy-to-carry camera with much manual functions. So I hope the follow up will have 2 batteries and the flip-screen and 4x zoom. I will definately buy it then, but at the moment I'm considering the A520.

I've read that a possible successor will come in September. Has anyone heard more rumours?

P.S. BTW, a mpeg movie mode with no limit will be nice too :D

Same here. I just sold my A95 (although I like it a lot) because it's a bit heavy and bigger than I prefer since all I want is a compact but with some manual control camera so I can carry around comfortablely during vacation or any outings. So regular AA batteries is a must (easily replaceble anywhere), and 3-4X zoom. Now I am looking to buy the A520, but I will wait for few months to see if the A95 successor would get the DiGIC II, two batteries, 4X, and 5 megs. That's what I am hoping for.

Hello all,

Complete novice to photography. Love watching birds and want to learn totake photos on DSLR eventually, but planning on getting A95 to learn how to take photos/ settings etc.

Wee question springs to mind after following this thread: What difference will D!GIC II make to me so that I should wait for the upgrade?
Prices of A95 are coming down over here, Comet:£185 from £245 this week, Ebuyer £181, making my money burn a hole in my pocket. (Which, for a Scotsman takes some doing! :D )

Thanks in advance for replies

My 1.5 cents -

The A95 upgrade will meet and exceed everyones expectations. HA hows that? LOL

Just looking at the A75, A85, and the A95... They didn't get smaller, just better.
Canon has a totally different line of cameras for those who want the credit card/shirt pocket camera - no need to reduce the size of an already compact camera. Thus, they will remain with the 4AAs. The Media format is really moot, I don't think they are going to change to SD, simply because those manufacturers who are wanting to reduce overall camera size move to this format due to its space savings.. Canon will not want to reduce the size of the A95replacement, like I mentioned before, they already have a line of cameras for that market. You will see D!gic II in it, why would they not add this improvement, they want to move cameras, especially the new ones, after all the money spent developing the D!igic II why not maximize profits with it and why invest the money in R&D, production, marketing for a replacement if its not worthy to do so.

As for waiting or not... Well a lot of people a heck of a lot smarter than I say, don't wait, the pictures you will capture between now and when the one you might be waiting for comes out will be priceless and lost if you wait. So take that as you will... I still think the successor to the A95 will knock your socks off. A few major electronics magazines are rating the Nikon PSs higher than the Canons right now... it used to be Canons higher than Nikons... So you can bet Canon has something to prove...
Like I said, not quite my 2 cents but close enough.

I just got the S2 and what I'm trying to figure out is, why isn't this the successor to the A95? Does an A95 successor really make any sense at this point? I mean, look at it...the S2 is an A95 with Digic II and a 12X zoom...

The S2 is also much more bulky, and about $250 more (in CND).

Actually, while we're comparing the two, I'm a bit stuck on whether to buy the more compact A95, or the newer (and with more features), bulkier S2. For those of you that own the S2, or have owned both, do you believe it would be too bulky and heavy to comfortably carry around in a small backpack or purse?

I'm really just trying to decide whether it make sense to spend so much more money on a camera I may find to be a greater burden.

Are the better features on the S2 (12x zoom, IS, movie mode, D!GIC II, etc.) sensible for a student travelling in Europe?

Sorry, I don't mean to turn this into a 'what camera should i buy' board, but past posters seem as though they know their stuff!

P.S. since I'm travelling, great image quality is a must!

For what it's worth, I went to Circuit City to check out the Canon S2 and when I saw and handled it, I was disappointed at its bulky size and shape. :I will not purchase the S2 for that reason. I did not find it to be a camera one can easily carry around. Just my opinion, but I'd advise you to see and handle it before purchasing one online.
