I am losing my Canon faith. I have had the mentality of buying only Canon, when it comes to camera's, and have always had perfect cameras. This goes back to my first 35MM SLR to the current SD500.

I have had several SD500's and am having a hard time getting myself to keep the current one.

Each one has had a different major problem, each compelling me to return it and try again.

All but one have had the low light focus assist off center to the point that the light it outside of the center focus rectangle.

All had differing degree's of whine in the .avi mode. Some minor, some pretty bad.

Two had buttons on the back that seemed loose. They would click funny when pressed.

One had a dead blue pixle on the display screen.

Each had varying degree's of gear noise when zooming in. Some were pretty light, and one (the current) is particularily loud. It sounds simply like a sloppy gear drive.

I thought I had a perfect one last week. What was a bit strange is that it was packaged different than the rest. The SD card came in a different sleeve. A Spanish set of manuals was also included (along with the English). The CD ROM was also different. Same content but different writing, etc... on the lable.

Like I said.......it WAS perfect. It made it thru about 35 pictures and it died. It shutdown, and then on restart it said relace battery. I charged battery and all the pictures were screwed up. Pink lines thru everything. The appeture was hyperacting back and forth. About 20 seconds and it shutdown, claiming the battery was again, dead. Back for another return....

At that point I was going to wait a few months, hoping that QC would resolve these issues. I couldn't make it. I love the performance of the SD500, so I went and bought another one Friday. I couldn't live without the thing. They are that good (when they work).

This one makes the most gear noise of any I have had, when zooming. This worries me, long term. Will it fail early?? Who knows?? But I am concerned.

It also has an off target low light assist lamp. Not really bad, but off screen by full zoom. At full wide, it is in the bottom 1/2 of the screen.

I can't decide what to do. I love the performance, but am worried about then lens noise and the off target auto assist lamp sucks for low light use.

I want to keep it, but it is tuff knowing stuff just isn't right.

may i ask where you got your sd500 from? perhaps the retailer has a bad batch or something... i'm interested in knowing because i know someone who was thinking of getting the sd500 himself, and if there really is a problem i should let him know about it. i don't recall these kinds of issues being reported in any of the reviews i've read so i hope it's just a matter of bad luck.

the assist lamp being off target is interesting... i did not realize it had to shine through the focus square thing- i always figured it just "painted" in the general direction the camera was pointed at.

good luck with your camera,
-hai

Which retailer did you get it from? Maybe it's a bad batch.

I haven't had a problem with mine, and I bought the day after it was available. I now can notice the video whine, but only at extremely high playback volume during quiet scenes. My camera's focusing is dead-on and has produced some very impressive low-light and night shots. I would not trade it for the world and haven't used my "permanently borrowed" G6 since I got the SD500. As a result, I continue to tell all those who ask that it is a great camera. Obviously some people have had some troubles...I'm not one of them. I'm still not convinced that the issues reported are wide-spread. We are part of a small community who is actively involved in acquiring, learning and exploring things digital photographic...so we are apt to be more observant and active and vocal. Believe me, if there starts to be wide-spread returns of the SD500, we'll hear about...I’m reserving final judgment till then.

Yes, I gotta agree with JTL - all of the SD500 I've come across (my friend owns a camera store) and they're all good.

To date, my only complaint has been the whine and I'll be ordering a replacement SD500 tomorrow from Costco. We'll see if I'll have better luck with the second one. For now, I'm guessing that my odds of getting one that works great (without the whine) are probably 50-50.

hey JTL where did you buy your SD500 at? Is it safe to buy it online instead of a store?

hey JTL where did you buy your SD500 at? Is it safe to buy it online instead of a store?I bought it in-store at J&R on Park Row in Manhattan (in their dedicated camera store...not the camera counter in the electronics store). They let me play with it all I wanted. They were knowledgeable and courteous. The wowen liked to talk shop and knew what she was talking about.

An interesting note....in the time I was in there, they must have sold 10 Canons! The only other camera someone else was looking at was a Casio. I said to the cashier "Boy, you sell a lot of Canons" and she replied "They fly out the door". While I was there I specifically noticed two SD300s, two A95s, one C70 and one A520 sold.
