Just wondering, what do you guys think the features and specs of the G7 will be if you were to make an educated guess. Do you think it would be a vast improvement on the G6? Share your thoughts. :)

Share your thoughts. :)Two things to bet real money on...Digic II (and with it, an enhanced movie mode) and an 8MP CMOS sensor (probably lifted from the 350D)...

i think it will be called G8 since G7 has 3 syllables ;)

The G7 (or G8 whatever) should have:

- 8 megapixels
- wider lense (28mm: 35mm equiv.)
- ISO 50-800
- widest aperture at F2.0
- unlimited movie recording
- E-TTL II flash
- support high speed read/write memory card
- support USB 2.0 (high speed)
- support AF-assist lamp on external flash (such as 220EX, 420EX etc.) I do not know whether AF-assist lamp on G6 is more efficient than the lamp on flash or not, please educate me.
- better AF-assist system in low light situation
- maintain flipable LCD display
- brighter LCD in low light

If Canon could develop the new G series digital camera which has 80% of my wish lists, I will upgrade to the new G certainly.

Hmm do you honestly think a high-res CMOS sensor is likely on a Prosumer camera and won't be kept exclusive to DSLR's?

The unlimited movie mode needs to arrive though, Fuji have had it for AGES on their M603 and similar cameras, and not bad quality too... USB2.0 doesn't bother me too much as everyone should have a card reader for convenience (though USB2.0 should be standard for a digi-cam).

If they lose the swivel-LCD i'll weep like a young girl as I need it for my animal/flower shots. :(

Hmm, so when yould you guesstimate a rough release date for a G7/G8? :)

The current G7 would have a new DIGIC II processor. A manual focus ring would be nice as well (its about time it got one). And maybe a bit better low-light autofocusing. ;)

I would be happy with a decent sodding view finder!

Its unlikely that we see canon's CMOS technology in compact digicams anytime time soon. The choice of sensor will depend on what sony can offer them. If sony decided they had enough of supplying them new sensors. We could see a new model with no increase in resolution. Just like from G2 to G3.

Hay DiJ, what cam are you using?... I love the pics especialy the ones from the ITShow.

All I'm hoping for is DIGIC II for now. A wider lens would be nice too. We're virtually guaranteed the rotating LCD. The G series cameras introduced that feature (or if not, brought it to mass popularity). It'd be nice to get a live histogram view too. That's been missing for a very long time.

I actually hope they keep the current sensor. The images are nice and clean as they are right now.

Thanks. I love those as well. My camera is a canon A80 at the moment.

I would buy a G7 if it can be operated by AA batteries or any ready to use off the counter batteries. With those proprietary batteries, the camera is just not good enough for shooting outdoors or at short notice. Of course, it must still have the external flash attachment and easy to focus in low light.

Having to use AA batteries introduces extra weight and also takes up a heck of a lot more space than a li-on battery.

hmm .. well, at least, considering the S2 IS has gotten DIGIC II, the G7 will definitely have it too ... but yeah, AA batteries don't look likely..

That CMOS sensor from XT idea seems intriguing. Not sure if they will do this but if they do, it would be awesome.

The G6 is already huge with such a sensor (1/1.8"), the XT's sensor would make it even bigger, just imagine how big is a 35-140mm lens for an xt, think that this could be done internally in a G-body? Don't think so. But panasonic-semiconductors recently developed a method to get 2 million pixels on a 1/4" CMOS, so on a 1/1.8" you could get nearly 10 megapixels, and that's CMOS technology! Hope to see that asap.

Nope, further down, from Ohsztraayliya actualy. :p Whish I were there though, not only for the cheap prices, but those hosts... (Homer drool) were a joy to see. :)

That panasonic info is pretty intruiging .. specially considering panasonic (or Matsushita, rather) joined the 4/3rds consortium with Olympus and should be starting to make SLRs pretty soon...

Well thats why I said I am not sure about the XT sensor in a G-Body. Could this be done? It would be nice if the engineers did some nice tricks :-D.

10 MP on 1/1.8" is great.
