Very nice depth of field, I like the way the details of that bee came out. What settings did you use?

thanks! :) The settings were: manual mode, f 2.8, ss 1/640 In macro. I have a 20D now and am looking to get a macro lens for it. Any suggestions?

Sea Slug-

Very nice photo. I have a Macro Lens for my Nikon D-70, but not for my Canon 20D. Perhaps if you ask in the Canon DSLR folder, you can get some excellent feed back.

That critter looks evil! Of course, I'm allergic to bees...

I'm kind of new to photography so please excuse my ignorance... but what exactly do you mean by "depth of field"? In photography what does that mean?

Thanks.

Thanks.Depth of Field (DOF for short) is the zone of sharpnes or focus in front and behind the subject you are focusing on, e.g, a shot with an in-focus subject and an out-of-focus backgroud would have a "shallow" DOF. An image where everything (to infinity) is in focus would have a "long" DOF.

The wider the aperture (the smaller the f/stop), the shallower the DOF will be. The focal length of the lens will also effect the depth of field...with wide-angle lenses producing greater field depth than telephoto lenses. There are some very technical reasons for this and if you're really interested, there are many good books on the subject....

Thankyou! And thankyou to all that have looked and appreciated. As a beginner it is really nice to get such nice things said by you professionals! As for settings, I mentioned them above. It was a handheld shot and I didn't attach a different lens to the A70 before taking the picture and didn't do any post taking-processing. Again, thanks for all the comments! :)

It doesn't compare to the one from the thread creator, but I do have two shots of a bee that I took in my back yard in the spring of 2004.

Very nice bumble bee, good colors & control over DOF there.

Sea Slug, check out canon EF 100mm f2.8 macro. I have it & its a great lens for macro & portraits. If you are tight on budget then sigma 105mm f2.8 is a very good alternative.

Thanks for the advice! I will check them out. I am going to wait for a while before I buy anyway so I will hopefully have a good idea of what I want by then! :)
