The Teasels (Dipsacum fullonum) are slowly starting to flower:

The flowers will appear as a purple ring on this structure.
Here is another one, where an enterprising spider has spun a net in it. I'm not sure if it is the spider, a bug or just a bit of plant you see in the middle of the web:

Nice shot Erad. How do you like the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG? I'm thinking of getting that lens myself.
im really satisfied with it, i was beginning to think i made a bad choice on the camera cuz my pictures were coming out way to soft with the lens it came with, but now that i got this new lens, my images now look better quality and much sharper. i would strongly recommend it to you.

Thanks for the advice, Erad. As I said, you seem to be taking some nice pics with it. I have heard the front element rotates on that lens. Do you find that in any way bothersome, or do you even notice?
i do notice it, but it doesnt bother me.

Went out flower hunting again today :). Here is the harvest.
First, an almost flowering Teasel, with a spider web and a drop:

And a Teasel that has started to flower:

Staying with prickly purple-ish wildflowers, a Bull Thistle:
http://static.flickr.com/73/196443381_fa75026e82_o.jpg
Mostly purple, but with a bit of yellow (Nature has obviously been reading up on the theory of complimentary colors) a Bitter-Sweet Nightshade:

First, a bee clinging to a Wild Bergamot:

You'll notice some other bugs on the flower as well, these tiny little shiny black things.

You're welcome... I especially like the teasel. I've actually never seen one in flower. They don't grow here too commonly. Though they used to - as they used to be used here in the production of wool, I think it was, a couple of hundred years back.
We've half a dozen dry ones in the room next to me. But autumn (fall)-dried ones are all I've ever seen.
gstafleu
07-27-2006, 04:55 PM
Yup, you take these prickly husks, mount them on some sort od drum apparatus, and then use that to "tease" the wool. Hence the name. They are native to Europe, not North America, so there is an element of unfairness in your not seeing them flower :).

On a slightly less mathematical front, here we have a butterfly that has landed on a Bull Thistle:
http://static.flickr.com/64/199890060_c3172c105a_o.jpg
The butterfly is obviously quite impressed with itself, as it is merrily sticking up its antenna.
Two dark red lilies against a sea of Marygolds:
http://static.flickr.com/74/199890091_e46f1bae29_o.jpg
To blur the background of Marygolds I uses a large aperture. That meant I had to make sure that the line connecting the two lilies was parallel to the camera so that they were both sharp. I used manual focussing, as otherwise chances are good the camera wants to focus on the Marygolds.
Her is the single-lily version of the above:
http://static.flickr.com/59/199890110_e6063a4f33_o.jpg
According to a book I read the thing to focus on in a flower is the stamina, so that's what I did.

Those are some convincingly pink Clematis Geoff! I like the shot where they are coming down along this vertical fence.
I've been embarked for a while on this project of getting a sharp picture of a bindweed. The problem is that the flowers are relatively deep, which means DOF problems with a close-up. I finally got something where most of the flower is reasonably sharp, 1/125, F19 and a monopod:
http://static.flickr.com/64/214542711_8b7eca1ee3.jpg
Another back-lit attempt, a Queen Anne's Lace:
http://static.flickr.com/85/214542763_e7978ce1eb_o.jpg
I'm not sure what that ball-thing is that you can see in the middle. Maybe an upside-down Lady bug?
And finally some Swamp Vervain:
http://static.flickr.com/69/214542913_85f97fec2d_o.jpg
You can see the swamp in question in the background (ok, its a lake made by a gravel pit).

Gerard the sharpness & strong colours of your flower shots is beautiful. I also loved your earlier backlit bindweed & Queen Anne's Lace shots it was those that inspired my attempt at backlighting with the gladioli.
Thanks for the kind words Geoff. I just saw the light shining through the petals & wondered if I could capture it. The light made the colours look pretty pale & I didn't think to use flash. I just spot metered and used high in camera saturation to try & compensate for the paleness. It worked to some extent but still looked a bit pale on the pc so I used auto contrast in Photoshop to expand the contrast range. I'm sure there was more that could have been done but that's about my limit for post processing at the moment. Can't seem to find the time to learn any more tricks yet. I used f2.8 & would still have liked a little more out of focus on the leaded window but with the FZ20 being a non dslr it was a bit difficult on a narrow window ledge. I took several shots as usual so it was a good exercise to see what worked & what didn't.

Bill, if you add some genes from that yellow flower to your BMsophila, you're well on your way to a nice paint job and some impressive frizzy tassels.
I bought a set of three close-up lenses to put onto my Sigma 18-125. I started with a +2 diopter:
http://static.flickr.com/83/221553290_cfb63d1dc2_o.jpg
This is a plant with very small florets, ~1mm, that turns red in the fall:
http://static.flickr.com/61/221553375_cdbc9505e5_o.jpg
Then I put on a +4 instead of a +2:
http://static.flickr.com/95/221553460_a589e9bff4_o.jpg
You may notice that some of the florets are caught in rain drops.
Here are the remnants of an aster-like flower:
http://static.flickr.com/66/221553101_6c0ac04391_o.jpg
And another one:
http://static.flickr.com/95/221553156_053409dce0_o.jpg
And finally one that has some more color left:
http://static.flickr.com/68/221553222_86e2744e4a_o.jpg
All in all not a bad result for less than $100. Needless to say I got to use my nifty new tripod as well, that last shot with 1.5 sec at F32 (taken with 2 sec mirror lock-up, no less)!

My guess is some kind of Centaurea.
And finally a Sulphur Cinquefoil (Potentilla recta):

Some really excellent shots on this page! I photographed the flowers below a few weeks ago, and today they were looking fairly tired and ready to collapse. Summer is so short...
Edit: Point of interest - on my 15.4" laptop with a WXGA screen (1280 by 800), this is sharp as a tack. I then looked at it on three different tube monitors at the public library. There were three different color casts and with all of them it was like looking through wax paper. I'll bet at least some of the hundreds of millions who view the DCRP are saying, "Boy, this guy could use a tutorial." :p

I have two yellow contributions. First, an Asteraceae of uncertain provenance, I suspect something sun-flower like:

This one is untouched - except for resizing down from orig 8mp

ISO50, 158mm equiv.

Exactly the same photo as abopve - except the aperture way open
resulting in far less depth of field (compare)

Background blurring is nice - but part of the flower starts to suffer
again comments welcome

I would be intrested if there werea few diffewrent exposures to compare - also being head on it's a bit two dimensional

Yes I have - the 740 was my first digi camera. Very good macro - lovely little camera. Macro at wide angle end only. I prefer the A-200 for it's more natural colours and higher resolution - but the Oly always produces very pleasing photos

yes there is a lack of deapth of field in that picture geoff. this was my favorite rose bush this year though, producing lots of great flowers. i took this next pic earlier in the summer, it is really soft and grainy and was taken at full zoom with my old casio P 600 but i quite like it. the blur in the background is from the garden sprinkler, i waited till it was hitting the tree and spraying off the leaves and branches.
thanks for the input.

First of all - congrats on getting the new camera - experiment and have
lots of fun with it.
I would also suggest taking several shots of things, at first, and compare them to see which you like best. In this shot I might have included all of the flower in the foreground and made it the main focal point. Have fun, and learn from your experimentation :)

Hello, I'm new here - this site seems..different...than the critical www.photosig.com, which is also a great site for improving photographic technique.
Here' s my favorite. It's winter in T.O. so she has hibernated away for now. Until next Spring!

Wandering around the yard this summer shooting tiny spiders, I looked up to see a begonia in a basket hanging in one of our trees in a way that I hadn't before considered. With the thousands of flower shots that I've taken, I didn't think that I had shot one from the side, between the petals . . . so I did.

Hi
zmikers, I really like your photo. But was it your intention to have a pink rose on pink background? If I may have a suggestion, I like clear colours, so I would correct white balance a bit. On attached images you have my imagination about it. Maybe "my" balance is not correct, I'm not sure what it should look like. It was just a quick exercise, each image about 10 seconds with Picasa. I it just my personal preference, on my monitor these images just look "clearer" to me.

P.S.
The others - your work is cool too :)

I'm going to take my image and work on the background a bit. I'll post again later and see what you think. Thanks again, I love getting feed back. zmikers, I consider my opinion being just a feeling, not a criticism. Especially because I am not too advanced :o
There will always be people who like more pink image and there will be ones who like more green, more saturated or less, darker or brighter. So I think the most important is what YOU like. ;)

Fair enough, and that's exactly why I appreciate your feedback. The more opinions from others I get, then the more open minded I can be about my photos. So again, in all honesty, I truely appreciate your thoughts!

Okay, I'll admit it. I may have cheated. I went to the Conservatory and took lots of pictures, but my daughter was with me and she also took a bunch with my camera. I can't remember who took those. And while I'm at it, I should mention that these were taken a couple of years ago. But not too shabby for a little old PowerShot A20, huh? I just saw yours and remembered that I had those on my hard drive and I couldn't resist.;)

Well, if that's "playing" I'm afraid to see "serious"! The main subject isn't quite sharp enough for my taste, but the colors and textures of the bokeh is just great. What lens and settings did you use?

Used a Canon S3 with a teleconverter (canon one)
Fun but kind of soft right, even resized
This is the best in about 15 shots, a slight wind may also have contributed to the softness
Using noise ninja made it look even softer, I am a novice at using noise ninja

Something is wrong here, probably the exposure.
I think it's the old red saturation problem raising it's head - it's quite common.
Yes I reckon a bit less exposure is part of the answer - and maybe - if possible, a touch less red if it's adjustable and a touch less saturation..

It's the APO DG Macro.
I haven't used it much at all yet - but so far so good.
You have to remembr it's a reasonably telephoto lens
(on Nikon equiv to 105 - 450mm) so you need to watch
those shutter speeds or support it.
I will try some bird shots if I get a chance sometime...
