Not really a flower, but was the most appropriate forum I could find.
Comments, please? I was told once that the subject of a shot like this should be a different color than the background. Do you think this works?

Ok, I sincerely apologize about the over-sharpening. This is my first weekend with my new 10d, and I used focalBlade too much on this thing.
Anyway, this is a (I guess) rare cactus flower. Taken outside of Tower Arch in Moab utah, this past Friday.
Don't have the data in front of me, but I'm pretty sure...

I will have to go back and take another swing at the RAW file; the real flower was just as bright red, but the sharpness here is making it look shiny, which it didn't.
Need a photoshop lesson - but I had enough to learn with the camera!
Oh any and all helpful comments about composition, quality, etc etc are most welcome and appreciated.

Thanks Dustyporch. I used photoshop to make the background consistently dark. Most of it was already black, but there was one part of a flower in the lower right corner and there was a small leave in the upper left. I made these dark using the burn tool.

Dylema, you can tell your grandson that he did a great job! I hope to see more of his pictures. I really like that he got close to the flower, that he didn't put it smack in the middle of the frame, and that he is thinking of unusual subject matter. Good for him.

CamilleWow! Very impressive photos!
You learned well on your FZ20...you have really good skills. Did you shoot 35mm before the FZ20?
Also...is that the kit lens?
Camille
05-23-2006, 07:51 PM
Nope. not the kit lens - its 28-105AF Kikkor 1:3.5-4.5D that I got with my N80 several years ago. It has a great macro and you can pick one up for a couple hundred bucks. I use a UV filter & collapsable hood for everything but inside and after dark. I am going to try shots with the kit lens but really like the feel of the old lens.
Really notice that there is no lag with this baby, at least not like the other digicams I've had which is great for getting those little bugs.
Used SLR's for 40 years and my father was an avid photographer in the 50s and 60s but really enjoy the instant gratification of digital. Enough blather. Wisteria buds with old seed pod using the FZ20. Untouched other than being cropped and resized.

Glenn, my uninformed eye says two things
1) I love the colors of the background, and the red, and the backlighting.
2) My eye follows the "line" at the top of the flowers, from lower left up to the topmost flower.... but when I get to the topmost one, it's too crowded against the edge of the pic.
So I guess personally I'd like to see the exact same pic, but more space at the top with that dark blueish background.
I get the idea, and I like it.

I really like this shot. I like the contrast of the flowers against the dark background (of a tree trunk?) I think it could be improved if the entire background was dark, like the tree trunk. Maybe a little change in position would have created that, or a closer zoom. It was hard for me to learn that shots like this look best in contrast with their background. But I think you are definitely on the right track here! Great photo!

Hi Folks
Great shots from everyone and so nice to see so many new "faces".
I am still a bit of a stranger on the forum at the moment but have purchased an S2 IS to go alongside my A80. The S2 IS is quite a beast [why did they not include the critical sports/kids and pets mode] and seems to me to require a more subtle handling to get equivalent shots to the A80. I am finding that exposure compensation needs to be set to produce histograms with a top end in the 90-100% region, whereas the A80 seemed to produce the better shots in 80-90%. Anyway a couple of 1000 shots taken and I am getting the hang of it. The x12 zoom with IS has opened up all sorts of new shots. I am finding that I am taking as many macros with the zoom as with macro and super macro. My shaky hands really welcome the IS.
Anyway here is a poppy macro via the zoom and it come with an automatic fuzzy background.

You don't. 234kB is the max allowed, and most of us would appreciate posters keeping the size to 800 x 600.
If you want to post larger pictures then use a gallery site like smugmug and post the pointer to the site like this:

Really like the subject matter here; however what is suppose to be the point of focus. As is, it's the stem, a couple of buds at the top and the flower on the far left. Best to give your viewer just one thing to draw their attention to OR increase your DOF to get the whole flower. I like the tree as a backround, however moving to the right a little more could have put the whole tree in instead of having big overexposed white space in upper right corner. The flower was a GREAT choice...orchid if I am not mistaken. Nice clean pedels!!!

Sorry I don't remember which camera you are using, but try changing the color mode to Ia, and turn down the in-camera saturation to neutral or normal. I think that like many cameras yours is clipping the reds. If you can shoot in RAW this is a much easier problem to fix.

It's a good pic, though I know how it feels when you just can't seem convey the feeling of a place in an image. If the field of buttercups was big enough, I would've probably tried to make a panorama. Or, get inside the field itself and take a pano (although that might be trespassing...). Another approach I might have used is taking a high angle shot, with the flowers in the foreground leading the eye to a distant point of interest, like the house or a shapely tree.
Can anyone say "lupin"?
I have no idea what this flower is--flower experts, do you know? I took the photo in Vermont last weekend, and edited it a bit. Comments welcome, and flower name sought!

I really like the shot. :)
But...there are some changes that I saw in my head. First, I think the bottom needed cropping. Before the density of the buttercups picks up, the foreground was a little boring. Also, by cropping the bottom, it makes the field seem more expansive. Second, the late afternoon shadows in the background were dragging the picture down.
So, I took a shot and did some edits (I hope you don't mind that I edited it...if it's not o.k. let me know and I won't do it again). After I lifted the shadows a little, I added back some contrast to get rid of the subsequent washed out effect...
Let me know what you think!

Just a quick reply to Wall & JTL on my buttercup field shot.
Wall - I didn't think panorama at the time but it would have been a good idea.
JTL - no I didn't mind at all you editing my shot, actually thats what I was hoping for. You improved it considerably thanks. With the crop I think you got the panorama feel that Wall suggested & PS really did improve the background.
Thanks guys that was just the feedback I was looking for it's a shame we don't have a critique forum to put this in rather than sidetracking the gallery threads.

Still finding my way around my new Canon S2 IS. I am pleased to find that colour reproduction is just as accurate and probably better than the A80. From what I have read it seems Canons score quite highly on this feature.
Here is a rose.

Wombat. Your new camera seems to handle reds well. I'm nver too sure about my former D70 or current D70s. I always feel the reds come out a bit overblown. What do I mean by that...? Sorry Sod1 - but your poppy shot is a perfect example of what I mean (you do take good sunsets, though!!). Too much red and not enough detail. I've taken a number of photos of the same type of poppy here and without PP they look like your one. Sort of drowning in undefined redness. Sod1, are you a Nikon user, too ??
Not red - but orange this time. A Buddleia globosa starting to blossom.

Hi Glen
I think there was a discussion of this phenomenon sometime last year. To be fair to sod1 the S2 IS doesn't cope with "poppy red" either. I have deleted nearly all my red poppy shots and the few I have kept have had to have the colour saturation adjusted.
The rose I posted above is more maroon than red so that may explain the better capture.
Here is are some Lychnis flowers that are nearly as bad as "poppy red" - and this was taken on an overcast day. I think the Mk 1 human eyeball is just simply superior to my digital camera.

You're right. That shot of yours is a bit hard on the eyes!! I've dozens of similar shots on my HDD. Pity, isn't it... poppies are nice and I have yet to figure out how to capture them well.
Ah well, I guess that's how they'll sucker us in to buying the "next generation" with a good red-handling ability.

Some shots I took today. The common theme seems to be isolating the flowers from the background. Camera: Pentax *ist DS, Sigma 18-125 lens.
First a Hollyhock:
http://static.flickr.com/72/178675144_01e876859e_o.jpg
This was shot at 125mm, f/16, which is normally not an aperture known for its narrow DOF! It works this time because a) the background is basically featureless sky, and b) because I'm pretty close to the plant so even the few visible trees still are fuzzy and c) the 125mm is fairly long.
Various bugs on Chicory flowers:
http://static.flickr.com/53/178675115_bc0d9500a6_o.jpg
125mm, f/5.6, a much more traditional isolating aperture.
A daylilly with a just visible spiderweb attached:
http://static.flickr.com/46/178675167_1130a866e2_o.jpg
125mm, f5.6. The original was a bit on the bright side, I reduced the gamma (midlevels) a bit. The dark background really helps here!
And finally an Evening Primrose that was flowering during the day:
http://static.flickr.com/61/178675195_564a46a4a5_o.jpg
125mm, F5.6. I positioned the flower so that the background was a dark patch undeneath the nearby bridge.
All pictures have been processed with what Photoshop calls "Levels" and Corel Photopaint "Contrast Enhancement". This is the equivalent of choosing your grade of paper and exposure time in the darkroom. Also, since this is a digital camera, all images have been sharpened with Unsharp Mask.
Beautiful flowers everyone!
Here's one I took today. It's called a Stargazer:

I have thought it was just my camera choices but reds are really squirrely on my D50 - but they were worse with the FZ20. Don't remember what it was like with a film camera. Beautiful pictures all!

TES, those are some nice ones. I especially like the 5-pointed purple thingy (notice my sophisticated nomenclature)! BTW, the next one, the bell shaped flowers, I would consider cropping that under the 3rd flower from the top, the last sharp one.
Jason, those buttercups have a nice atmosphere about them. You must have taken them on a cloudy day? I notice that whenever I try a buttercup in full sun the thing sort of blows out because it is so reflective.
Here is my harvest for the day; First a Hairy Cat's-Ear (Hypochaeris radicata, Asteraceae). Obviously a close cousin of the dandylion;

That orange glob underneath the bee is the pollen it has gathered.
To finish today, a garden plant. No idea what it is called, my ability to name flowers seems to be limited to wildflowers, no doubt a side effect of having studied botany a looooong time ago :). Anyway, this thing will make red trumpet-shaped flowers. These are the buds:

Comments, criticism, edits welcomed. I underexposed the shots and then brought them back in PP, and that seemed to make a difference, especially in the white flowers or the ones in bright sunlight. I used autofocus today, usually I've been using manual. Autofocus sure has its benefits!

I love my macro lens. It is a Tamaron 70-200 Tele-Macro. I just got my camera about 2 weeks ago and have shot about 400 pictures. Have basically been taking my camera wherever I go.
My camera is a Nikon D50 and I love the colors that I have been getting with it.
Thanks for the comment.

Not sure who named this plant a Yucca but I think it is pretty spectacular in real life. The shots don't quite convey the best of it but I'll try again another day. We have been waiting expectantly for a few weeks now for it to finally open as it hasn't flowered for about 5 years. The flowering area is about 3ft tall.

Thanks! I did take them on an overcast day, also in the woods. I tried to shoot them wide open (f/1.8), but I got the same result you described every time, so I had to stop down a little bit, which did the trick :)

I thought I'd take some pics of flowers in my garden, given we just had a hose-down.
I'll start pink:

And orange:

Some pale-purple hostas:

And a close-up of one of them:

Black is a color too:

I'll end with "The Adventures of a Bug." I'll make the pics a bit bigger so that you can actually see the bug!

Water lilies are hard, I think, because they are white and generally float on a dark background. That means exposure problems, it is a lot of contrast to bridge. Lacking a lily-shaped graduated neutral density filter, I basically had to get lucky. I must have had some luck, because some of the pics turned out passable.
