I like your shots with the a200 more, mostly because of the very short depth of field it gives you.
Thanks AlkaPhunk, I understand where you are coming from on that - however I do have to be very aware of that DOF as I can end up with too much of the subject out of focus if I am not carefull. Just have to be carefull then won't I!!

This is the sort of Macro I like the A-200 for - natural portrayal of the flower - but with the detail (obviously the orig is better - but it was only @5mp)
G
(EDIT - I just went out to the back garden and measured this so you know what sort of flower it is ... I know I'm very sad!! - anyway - from tip to tip of petal it is 1.5 inches)

I'm moving to this house I've bought, it's in this great sacred nature /reserve kind of place. Today I was there and I had to park just where these guys were sunbathing. Not really a macro shot but - my home :p

Its amazing if you keep an open eye to the beautiful flowers readily available to photograph.
These are Coneflower's growing in gardens outside Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Took about 60 seconds to compose and snap three images and move on. I almost forgot even taking these.

LOL ... thanks JTL ... a lot of reviews complained about how the 350D/XT was awkward changing the various control settings but I personally have got it down pat and find it quite easy. The only mistake I find myself doing is the occasional White Balance set wrong but thats where shooting in RAW helps out.

Great photos of flowers - everyone. Thanks for sharing them - I am really looking forward to every new one.
Here is an "studio shot" of a white clover head [Trifolium repens]. I am amazed just how beautiful these are when revealed by the camera.

I just discovered this thread, it has great pictures. Is it ok to post pictures of a whole bunch of flowers as opposed to just a few at a time? These are from the Dutch park the Keukenhof (literally: kitchen garden), which is an exposition of Dutch bulb-prowess in the spring time. All pictures taken with my Canon A75, WB set to cloudy.
First a river of little grapes:

Here is an impression of walking in the garden:

As you can tell, the color-explosion can get a bit out of hand:
http://publish.uwo.ca/~gerard/photos/keukenhof/keukenhof2.jpg
And finally, some tulips with romantic rain drops (it was often romantically raining during our visit):

Thanks for the nice words everyone. Here are some more Keukenhof pics. First a close-up of one of these rainily romantic tulips:

In addition to the bulbs (BTW, could one now say that the Canon A75 apparently has a bulb mode?), the flowering shrubs weren't doing too bad either:

But lest the shrubs steal the stage, here are some more tulips:

Really nice - do you like that camera? Is it new??
Thanks Geoff. Yes, the camera is new, I've had it for a week now. What they say about DSLR's is true: you have to get used to them, certainly when you are coming from a P&S. That seems to mean 1) finding settings that work for you, and 2) thinking about exposure adjustment much more than with a P&S. But once you do that life (and the pictures :)) improve. This flower was one of the first pics that I really liked. And, of course (shameless plug coming up) the cow I posted in the Moo Factor thread. The camera is generally very pleasant to work with. It holds well, it has a great viewfinder, and all functions you want to easily access are easily (i.e. without menu digging) accessible.

My heart really yearns for a dSLR but my life & my family require something a little more discreet!!
I am going away on a course for a week - so please everyone keep up the good work & post lots of great shots for me to find when I get back.

Thanks Bald Eagle for the kind comments. I did take some others at the same time but I think this was the best. Red roses, in fact red flowers in general, seem to be more difficult to photograph. They seem to come out oversaturated with little definition of the flower parts. I am not sure whether this is me or a weakness of the Canon A80 - or possibly both  I shall keep trying different settings till something nice happens!

In the last few days BaldEagle has treated us once more to his usual bold colors and very fine detail. Mika has a great Dahlia photo that demonstrates the delicate detail of flowers so well. Thanks Bluedog for the kind comments. I usually save my photos for posting from Picassa at 650 across the horizontal length but they are still too big in file size. So I open them in MS photo editor do 4 x 45 degree rotations and this cuts the size down to about 30-50kb and I imagine degrades the quality in the process??
Here is a rose of a similar colour to your beatiful tiger lily- it really was like fire and my Canon A80 rarely lies about these things :)

wall - really lovely pics - keep them coming!
I was away on a Safe High Voltage Electrical course. I decided not to take a camera as I didn't want to irritate and bore everyone and also thought there would be no photo opportunities. How wrong I was!!! We were right beside (and I really mean RIGHT beside) Ratcliffe Power Station in the midlands of England. 8 massive cooling towers set in a beautifull countryside. Great lighting and moody shots. Poppies on the road side with huge towers in the background...Also some of the stuff we were doing was interesting too - we had a few fun experiments - one was passing High Voltage through a twig and watching the effects. So I will ALWAYS take the camera in future - even if I think there will be no photo opportunities.
Shortage of spare time recently - more pics soon

gstafleu - that is a lovely composition of the mallow flower and bud - very subtle colour and shape well captured.
phistio - I find thistles tricky to shoot I usually miss the details you have captured so nicely. I notice you were on ISO 200 setting. I have been using this on my Canon A80 recently. Actually I turned it up to capture some bees on flowers and forget to turn it down again!!
It really helps with my camera shake and when a breeze is moving the flowers. I am quite surprised just how much movement there can be and yet ISO 200 seems to cope. I am sure there is some loss in quality but better that, than a load of blurred shots.

Really loving everyones photos here - thanks to all!
This is sort of chat I guess ~ you may have heard me say that my A-200 has a strange sort of approach to macro and mention it's not the very best for super close ups.
Well - here's a little flower - with my thumb for scale. This shot isn't as close as I can get.

Finally - using 8mp resolution on the orig - I can make a substantial crop to get this: -
Most flowers etc arn't this small - so mostly I've got it covered with the A-200 - the Oly C-740 goes in a lot closer but at wide angle - the result is about a 3rd larger image I guess.

Well, the obvious one: the A200 does pretty good close-ups.
In addition, the image could stand a bit of USM. Once I've resized to web-size I usually do a USM of amount=100, radius=1. That seems to give a bit more crispness. Otherwise a very good pic I'd say. I like the little fly, it gives a nice accent.

OK this is a rose my wife picked - couldn't resist it sitting there in the kitchen

gstafleu : - Thanks for the comments. As for the USM - it's a handy tool for sure. My version in Serif has Amount, Radius & Threshold. I tend to use it quite paringly when I do use it. The Radius I have found seems to link with the image size - so an 8mp image would require a larger radius for a similar affect to a smaller image with a smaller radius. Amount? I tend to range between 45 and 60 most of the time, then the threshold is a sort of smoothing off at the end and I usually stick with 1 or maybe 2 on a larger image.
Continuing on about the close ups - the A-200 has basically 2 macro positions one at each end of the zoom range. Neither go very close so true close ups are only achieved on the telephoto end ~ that's what I mean by a strange approach to macro. I have to be very carefull about focus because of the reduced depth of field. Quite happy though!
Thanks again for the comments - and to everyone else - keep this thread flying - it's very good!!

I apologize that I have been away from our thread for so long, but I have had to set up a new much smaller laptop computer that I will use for the upcoming Russia contract (we leave on this coming Monday- 06/27). So, everything had tobe transfered over to the new laptop, and it was not the smoothest transition in the world. So I will again be gone from 06/27 through about 07/14.
The photos you have posted are wonderful. Many thanks to pbt1234, gstafleu, wombat (our star poster for this time period), bluedog, geoff, sbnr, wax, baldeagle and his Chick, and boxgirl. We also have some new cameras as well Wall has a new S-2 that has a nice super macro mode, boxgirl has a new Canon A-95 that dies great work.
We have had about 10 days span between the China trip and the Russia trip and we have been as busy as little beavers. Not only did we have the usual turn around chores of laundry etc, but we had a major electrical problem to deal with in the house, had to change the kitchen sink faucet, and move into a new laptop, being sure that we had all of the teaching material correctly transfered and fully operable.
So here is my contribution. It is actually an older photo taken with A Pentax S5i taken about 7 months ago - F 3.5 at 1/20th. It was of a large boquet that I was using to demonstrate close-ups. Its not the greatest close-up, as it lacks a bit of detail due to overexposure, but it served for the demo. I was shooting like crazy in China, but with everything we have had to do, I have not taken but one photo since we arrived home.
Have a great day and many thanks for your great contributions.

I notice that RED - red is the one that seems to saturate the worst for most of us here - there was a fabulaous rose bud earlier that was just perfect (not mine!!).
So here I go again! Firstly to put my little Rose into perspective - I think they call this a Patio Rose as it is a small breed.

Ok - so moving in pretty close with the C-740 (@38mm super macro).
This at 100 asa, f3.2 - 1/200th sec -0.7ev (actually could do with even less exposure).
Geoff Chandler
06-22-2005, 03:35 PM
Finally a similar shot with the A-200. Not a fair comparison by any means - but still interesting to see the differences.
This one in Macro at 200mm, 50 asa, f5.6, 1/60th sec with antishake, -1.7 ev
The A-200 tends to slightly more over expose on dark things that's why I used less exposure. Also unfair comparison as they are at different focal length and, therefore used different apperture.
Anyway - I still think these have slightly over saturated on the highlights - yes it was a very sunny day - but it's usually the Reds that seem to do this the worst
There you are - another comparison. Anyone else got any comparisons to share??

Interesting about red saturation. I just took this picture of a very red Peonie:
http://publish.uwo.ca/~gerard/photos/redPeonie.jpg
When I saw it I thought, well, that is very red. It was taken in morning light, so that would add some redness. My Pentax *ist DS is set to natural colors, and so far I haven't seen any over saturation. Maybe red is just redder than we think?

Fascinating set of shots Geoff. It has made me go and look through my limited supply red flower shots. Certainly for my Canon A80 the problem of saturation appears to be related more to the orange-reds rather than than the bluish reds. Hmmm! thought I might get away without using names of colours as they are a bit subjective, however vermillion [an orange red] seems to be a greater problem than crimson [a blood colour] if you see what I mean. A good shot of red poppies has evaded me so far. I read recently that flowers have a wide variety of textures from matt to shiny and wonder if the "difficult flowers" are those with shinier petals.
Here is an orange-red nasturtium, very saturated but I am sure it was just as orange-red as this. I am sure the human eye/brain adjusts to colours in a way a camera cannot.

Well, as a beginner with very little time to learn the camera, here's a contribution from me -the flower is dark red/brown-ish from the start, and I made the colours warmer by using the, that's right, "warm" colour effect on the camera. To tell the truth, the difference from the "natural" look of the flower (the way it looked to me) isn't big! I'm using a Panasonic FZ5.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v357/Northern_Lights/19181954.jpg
Nice job on the colors, amj07. In the right hands, the FZ5 can be a deadly macro tool  . Here's yet another flower macro I took in my backyard, with the FZ5:
F/2.8; 1/50; ISO 80; Normal color settings
http://img117.echo.cx/img117/4318/p1000237ed6px.jpg
The color in the photo looks flatter than the real thing; I guess I should've boost the saturation a bit to give it a bit more punch.
Oh, BTW, I like your "trumpets" shot, Bald Eagle. Very unique viewpoint.

Hi Sarah,
As the official muse of this thread you must be quite pleased with the result so far. It took me forever to get through the 63 pages and a huge proportion of the images are stunning. I didn't notice any silk tree flowers so I will post a link if anybody wants to see them. Some people call them mimosas.

WOW! That is really pretty! I love the way it looks as if the flower is all lit up.
My attempts for today were well blurry. If my hand didn't shake then the darn flowers did lol. Definitely not a good idea to take pictures when it is windy. Plus I started out an hour before sunset ... its waaaay too hot to get out of the house anytime before that. So that meant not too much light ... worked on P mode and the camera really liked choosing slower shutter speed 'cos of the lighting. So there I was standing over the flowers telling them to stop moving in the wind ... too bad they don't listen ;-)

Wombat, very interesting comparison - I'm guessing your processed version was a bit more true to the orig flower (?) - The other thing, coupled with this, is the red highlights seem to either wash out or saturate to the point of fine detail loss - this is a generalisation I have observed with many photos by many people - inclusing myself. With the A-200, more so, I tend to under expose the shot a bit which seems to allow these details to remain in tact. The Oly changes the colours a bit with purples and reds - despite a jog in the direction of blue on the on board digital colour tweek. Not a big prob. The A-200 is slightly truer in that respect.
This Pic is the Honeysuckle in my Back garden, taken looking upwards at the flower. I took 2 shots - one slightly less close with more DOF/smaller apperture. But I decided I liked this one a bit better with the shallower focus making you focus on the middle flower more. (A-200, F4, 1/125th sec,176mm equiv, 0ev ) This didn't mess up with saturation etc, and this is the right colour - assuming your Screen is set up OK

Love the light and the detail in this shot. Keep em coming!
Here's a link to a collection I posted in Early June on the Karma site. (Also check towards the end of the thread for more pics.) I would appreciate an ID on the flower in the 3rd and 4th picture. With this many flower experts on this thread somebody should know.

Geoff, this is just beautiful. I like how you captured the subtle colors. Rabbits eat flowers?

Rabbits eat flowers, Rabbits eat just about everything in the garden. We had the garden all secured so it could run around - then we treated ourselves to a whole load of new plants - but the Rabbit misinterpreted it as a wonderfull gift for him to eat!! Sadly - the Fox misinterpreted the Rabbit as a wonderfull gift for him to eat when I was away in America!!!
Anyway - thanks for the kind comment...

Nice one, Wombat. Lots of detail. May I suggest that you increase the aperture to blur the background a little more. It should make the flower stand out more. (Though I don't know if that's possible under your shooting conditions; your shutter speed looks pretty close to being maxed out)

I think you are right Wall on both counts - the background is too in focus but the macro mode sets ap for near enough maximum. Will try a little of the "blur" mode on Picassa.

Here's one for opinions/comments :-
I played in Serif (like Photoshop) with this one as it is a bit of a dark, quite strong red, flower and hard to reproduce accurately - obviously no one will have seen the orig so it is really a subjective opinion. Rachel prefers the orig as it is brighter.

I too like the amended version best - the dark shadows add a lot of depth and richness to my eye. Both very choice shots of a difficult coloured subject.
Here are some Astrantia [Hattie's Pincushion] flowers. I really like taking shots of these, the subtle colours photograph well and the shapes and shadows are just great. These were taken in dappled sunlight. They tend to flower in groups so getting a singleton is nigh impossible. A possible job for photoshop when I have saved up my pocket-money. :D

Superb pictures from everyone!
I'd like to share a picture with a grasshopper having a dessert. I used Canon A70, wide angle macro (that gets me closer), Av priority, F-number and aperture values show f/8 (max.aperture shows f/2.8, so I'm confused), 1/60s, exposure -1/3, sunny, ISO50. The meal must have been too delicious to be intimidated by a giant with a digicam.
I have set low sharpening in my camera and applied unsharp mask in GIMP (parameters 5, 0.4, 0). I saved the pic with 65% jpeg quality to achieve small file size, that has somewhat negated my attempts at sharpening.
I don't see my pic in preview mode but I hope it will be there.

Canon A70, telephoto macro, Av priority, F-number and aperture values show f/8, max.aperture shows f/4.8 so that should be the right number (?), 1/500s, sunny, no exposure compensation, ISO50. This photo is not sharpened, just resized 50%.

This was so difficult to take ... the flower (orchid) is around 2 inches in diameter and loves blowing around in the wind. Got this after way too many blurry attempts ... though not as sharp as I'd like it to be ... considering the wind .. I'll live with it lol. And I'm ignoring the blue fringing on the outside edge of the petals ... heard of purple .. but blue? Oh and of course I cropped the image :)

Hi Lynchbird,
Those silk trees look just like the ones we have in Gainesville. Are you in Florida?

photogenic, great first shots with the new camera, the first, to me, has a good picture, but it has a lot of noise as well, have you tried Neat image yet? the second, i like much better, much sharper, good colors, and crisp, the only thing i might suggest is to try to compose the flower a little differently, such as, all the petals in the shot, or from the top down. all in all great shots though. post more.
