Thanks Sarah, I tried a few more - but I think I will only keep a few. Apparently it's a Peace plant or Peace flower.

Still antipating and then enjoying every one of the flower photos. Here is one taken outdoors, Canon A80, handheld, ISO 100, macro+zoom functions, exposure compensation -1, Ap 3.2, exp 1/500s, heavy crop.
Thanks to the forum I recently discovered what the ISO setting was for! Very helpful for this shot taken on a breezy day.

PS
jeff31 what is the white flower you posted, very nice handling of a white subject and the veins and texture adds to the richness. It was labelled

Hi Sarah
Thank you for the kind comment. Well, you certainly started something with this thread. I think everyone is learning so much more about flower photography from the many postings - I know I am. Here's another of a yellow poppy still unfurling its petals - I rather like the crumpled look. Taken indoors, natural light, Canon A80.
Hi Peisner
Really like the diagonal composition of the orange flower and all set off against a blue sky - or perhaps, as the shadow suggests, indoors?

Hear Hear - I totally agree - Jeff - do you use close up lenses on some of these??
I took some little flowers in my garden today whilst out there playing cameras with my daughter. They are about 3/4 inch across at the largest (2cm) - I measured as I wanted to see what I could do with the A-200, I know my Oly goes very close - but the A-200 is strangly different - closest is 25cm - but at 200mm - so it's quite a close image
See below...
Geoff Chandler
05-15-2005, 10:43 AM
BTW - that's no processing at all - other than size reduction and file compression.
I accidentally had the Camera on 8mp at the time - which normally is more than I feel is needed - but it meant I was able to do a good crop to see just what detail was in the orig 8mp pics. ~also below...
In summary - I prefer the normal way of doing macro on my Olympus - but I can get what I want out of the A-200 OK. Just feels odd doing macro at telephoto. Looking at Jeff's pics I am seriously tempted to add some macro lens on the front of it.

Pretty sure I haven't posted this one before - if I have - please accept appologies - one from last year when we first arrived in this house - taken on the Olympus C-740UZ - (orig only 1280x960) I did find the info - F4.5, 800th sec, 100asa
Just starting to learn and experiment with macro on the Canon G6. This is actually a supermacro. I need to do a better job with the focusing. This is a little out of focus. Comments welcome.

Love the evening colouring on that one! I think the Tamron lens may well be a great asset - don't know in the digital world - I had one for my SLR's and it was great. Hi All
Seriously enjoying all the postings to the flower thread - very inspirational.
Not sure whether this should be here or on the tulip thread or even on the bird thread ;-) as it is a parrot tulip. I shall certainly try some in the garden next year.
I wasn't keen initially on the background but I think it is growing on me. Taken with Canon A80, hand held, zoom and macro function, Ap. f/4, Exp. 1/200s, exposure compensation -1/3.
I have another shot of a black parrot tulip but it needs the background seriously changing. I only have photoimpression software and not much skill in cloning. If some kind soul, hint, hint, would like a challenge let me know and I can send a copy of the original.

Wow folks! There are a lot of really nice flower shots here, but how about a description of the flowers (common name) as well as camera/lens info. Not everyone who appreciates flowers knows what they are (like me). I'm as guilty of this as the next guy, but thought it would be nice to be educated as well.
So from now on when I post a flower (or plant) I promise to include the common name.

Hi Sarah, Yes, fortunately this one was labled in the beginning.
I was talking about "in general" as there are a lot of really nice flower shots here but unless you are a gardener you may not know what they are. :o Or where they came from... I mean, what if I want some of those flowers in my garden (although at 110 degrees F I'm not too sure how some of these would fare)?
Anyway, glad to see you made it back ok, and I bet you guys are burried in new images. Any new cameras in the collection?

Bluedog, you already have a gold star. It's the rest of us (me too) that need to label (when we can). Sometimes we just flat don't know what we are shootin' but it's mighty purdy like the one included here. I have no idea of what it is.
But if someone out there knows what it is, maybe they can help us brown-thumbs.

They are both very nice shots, but in the first picture you have some blown-out areas in the lower left. The second shot has a very nice background and you can see the difference as it gives a softer and more pleasing look.
So beware of small bright sunny areas when you are shooting. They tend to blow out the background. That said, you could easily crop most of that out.

that was with my thrifty fifty on my ol' 350D.
I love this little lens. Very good optics and bokeh for next to nothing. I paid 58 bucks for it!
The one above it, the cactus's background is not as blurred because it is about 1.5" from the cactus. If it were say, 5" or more, the background would be solid brown and buttery smooth.
I couldn't help that the cactus was only 1.5" tall. That picture was taken with the Sigma 20mm f/1.8. That lens can produce some really nice bokeh, under normal situations.

Fiorano-
To post an attachment keep in mind that the file size has to be small, around 100kb in size. Scroll down below where you normally submit your post, and you will find the attachment section. I hope I got that right. Please make corrections where necessary.
By the way Fiorano, thank you for submitting the Pansy photos. They were nice, but could be improved by wathing for blown out highlights and distracting backgrounds. You might want to use aperture control to de-focus the background as Obijuan did with the red Geranium photo.

Wombat- Thanks for both of your recent submissions. Your quality and compisition are great. Yes, you are definitely beyond point and shoot category! I really liked what I will refer to as blue crown2. It was great and the background really worked well in that photo.
Dennis- I loved the colorful orange tulips. You almost feel that you are right there with them. Thanks as well for posting them on this thread.
AlkaPhunk- Thanks for posting the blue crown flower. It looks great and the well lighted back ground gave an "in the garden" feeling to the photo.
ObiJuan- I just love what you can do with that "thrifty-fifty" lens. The white fuzzy flower photo was very dramatic. The DOF control on the red Geranium was outstanding. Great Photog-Great Lens-Great Photos.

Hi Joyce
Thank you for the kind remarks and for keeping such a vigilant eye on "your" thread ;-) it is certainly generating some wonderful images.
Here is the white form of the "blue crown" which is called Centaurea montana "Alba". Pity about the obstrusive green leaf spoiling the symmetry. When I get some better software I will probably try removing it.

I like shots that aren't full frame. Sometimes flowers can look like they are floating about in the frame. When the frame obstructs the flower it seems to anchor it and leads the eye into the photo. Then again it might be just me ;-)
Here's one with cropping well into the flower, a narcissus, that hopefully demonstrates the above.

I dunno. The more I look at it the more I like it as part of the pic. Normally it would be distracting since most of the background is being doubled instead of rendered buttery smooth..

Hi
Rachel was very pleased to get a reply so quickly - she asked me to say thanks as I was on browsing ~ so thanks to Sarah & womat- Later in the year when we go on holiday she hopes to take some more pics. If she gets interested enough (and I won't push her as it may put her off) I may re-evaluate the camera situation with the view to something for the Children as they both seem to prefer the A-200 - maybe something with a nice grip, not too big but with a nice flip out screen...best I pay off the debt on the A-200 first!!! I intend to get a close up lens for it and maybe a decent flash - but that's about all. Looking at Jeff31's pics has inspired me to get an add on close up lens.

It's creative and I don't really think mistakes is a word to use - alternative ideas may be better. I think you have enjoyed experimenting with the pic and the background and that you should do a whole load of them and then look and see which pleases you the most - make notes on how each one was done.

Gerbera. I've been watering and watching this for a week or so - putting it out in the sunshine during the day etc. It lives in it's pot in our kitchen.
So I photographed it this evening - in the window with the light slightly behind. Actually I liked the lighting as it was not too vivid or contrast - but it was a bit behind it. Also it was a touch low lighting. 20th sec, F3.5, 100asa, 200mm ~ just into the macro range and, of course, Antishake. Shallow depth of field results in the petals at the bottom a bit off focus - but I'm happy with it. It's not a perfect specimen - but its ours and we like it.

Very good idea, this waterfalls as a background.
I really like that, but on my opinion, i think your pic is a bit out of focus. If I could say.
Maybe you could post-treated it a bit to regain a few focus.
A very classic one, but i like the color :

Very nice - did you adjust the contrast afterwards to arken the background down?? I think it's a really well taken shot, as I have said before - we don't have to always take flowers really close up, and this is a lovely example of just that.

Loads of great shots as ever everyone. Nice to see a few shots showing more of the plant also, sometimes nice to get the larger picture - DThomson. Some great close ups to BE & Wombat.
Sometimes certain subjects just don't quite work - this is true for me with a yellow rose in the front garden - the A-200 just doesn't gell with it # it's either to close in using 200mm macro, or it's on the borderline between macro and not macro - so it's tricky deciding - either way this Rose really would be better with a wider macro (*also a nicer lighting would have helped)

I was going to make a seperate thread for this - but I felt it would be best here.
Sometimes I wonder if my A-200 is good enough - generally it's because of the odd approach to macro. best macro is generally done at the telephoto end.
The Olympus on the other hand is limited to it's wide end for macro - BUT you can get down to 3cm. The upshot is they can produce similar sized images - but the perspective is quite different.
Sometimes the Oly seems better and sometimes the A-200 seems better - always the A-200 can resolve better.
I have done a series of macro comparisons with all images treated the same and reduced to 700 wide more or less straight off the camera otherwise. My observation is the A-200 is usually more accurate though the C-740 can look impressive.
Here's the first - a small yellow flower in a pot by my front door - on the C-740 first.
Geoff Chandler
06-07-2005, 08:54 AM
Now the same flower on the A-200 at getting on for 200mm as opposed to 38 on the Oly
Comments/observations gratefully (and gracefully) recieved!!
Geoff Chandler
06-07-2005, 08:56 AM
Now the Oly turns to a purpley shaded flower - not sure what the colour is - but the oly gets it a bit wrong adding a touch of yellow I think - making it a touch bergundy - however it's fairly sharp on the Oly
Geoff Chandler
06-07-2005, 08:58 AM
Now it really starts to get confusing. The A-200 colour is better but it seems to haveslightly over exposed this one.
Geoff Chandler
06-07-2005, 09:04 AM
So - in this instance the A-200 is better slightly under exposing.
Again Comments welcome...
> It seems generally the Oly slightly washes out highlights a bit due to the extra contrast etc - but I have that down by 4 to help out - however, when it comes to dark flowers it's the A-200 that tends to over expose.
I was starting to think the A-200 was not so good - but I guess its just different. With most normal shots it's lovely and natural with lots of detail - the C-740 tends to be more contrasty and sharpened up - rather like a processed postcard - but I have that more or less under control by reducing the contrast by 4 out of 5 and reducing the sharpness by 1 or 2 - also I often add one step in the blue direction to help with that colour change.
SO - This shot is the most accurate when compared with the actual flower.
AlkaPhunk
06-07-2005, 09:16 AM
I like your shots with the a200 more, mostly because of the very short depth of field it gives you.
Geoff Chandler
06-07-2005, 09:17 AM
Here's a seperate one - taken for the shot rather than an experiment - I much prefer this approach! The angle is more interesting
(A-200, Slightly cropped image, 200mm Macro, F4.5, 1/60th sec,100 ISO)
