Lovely whites Elisha & I like the border too. Must get round to doing borders myself one day - any tips?
Here's a few of our Rhododendron that has just burst into flower just before the rain flattens it.
All straight from the camera just cropped a bit.

the borders are manually done in LR under the Lens Correction and Post-Crop sliders.
i move most of them all the way to the left depending on the effect you want and the last slider all the way to your right.

Thanks Elisha unfortunately I don't have LR so will have to work out another way.
Here's a couple of Rhododendron shots after the rain.

Very nice, Gabriel. There are a lot of surprisingly good Helios-branded lenses floating around (mostly being Zeiss copies made with Zeiss equipment taken after WW2) and 44-2 is a classic.
Perhaps just a stop smaller aperture?

Thank you,Jekostas! I think you are right about the stop but in the particular conditions (the flower was too big for the DOF and the light was rather poor) I should have used a tripod or at least a monopod to achieve this. The colors seem pretty good to me though, compared with other lenses I used sofar. More than this, I think maybe I should remove the glass from the M42 adapter (as I don't need infinity focus) and see if this improves the clarity.

Compositionally I like the first one. Though I'd take some off the right so that the flower leads into the frame more. The second shot is much weaker IMO.
Thanks Rooz. It's using a reverse mounted Olympus 50mm lens.

There's no focusing really. The focusing plane is set and you just have to work with it. For that reason it can be very frustrating to use a tripod. Not too bad hand held. I'm using an older lens with a DOF preview button and the aperture ring on the lens. I just push down the DOF preview button when I'm ready to take the shot so it closes down to the right aperture. Off the top of my head I think the width of the frame is 7/8" with the 50mm lens I have. 7/8" might actually be for the 24mm lens I have. I can't remember. I know the 24mm lens gets me closer, but it's harder to see what I'm doing because it's f/2.8.

Captured this flower at Clumber park on a digital photography workshop, not sure what the flower is. First shot is cropped to try to improve composition second adds a bit of soft focus and the third is a very close crop & a bit of very crude removal of the adjacent petals behind the bee. The session was to practise improving my composition skills - this was the close up section quite a way to go yet, I was particularly rubbish at the landscape section so wont be posting any of those.

Usually, I prefer more of a background blur on flower shots, but I love the contrast of the bright blue flowers compared to the snowy, barren hills behind. I like it as is, although my laptop I'm viewing it on now has really punchy colours. I'll check when I get home too.

Jekostas: Sorry, but that is not a lady slipper - lady slipper is a spring orchid, <Wikipedia says> lady slipper orchids or slipper orchids are the orchids in the subfamily Cypripedioidea, which includes the genera Cypripedium, Mexipedium, Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium and Selenipedium. They are characterized by the slipper-shaped pouches (modified labellums) of the flowers – the pouch traps insects so they are forced to climb up past the staminode, behind which they collect or deposit pollinia, thus fertilizing the flower.
The photo you have there is an Impatiens sp. a genus of about 850–1,000 species of flowering plants, widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere and tropics. The common name is Jewelweed. The reason they're considered "impatient" is because if you walk through a field of them in the fall when the seeds are ripening, the disturbance of you passing through the field will cause them to shoot their seeds out and you'll hear and feel the seeds being shot out of the seedpods.

I was playing around with some sunflowers last night, that I cut after dark.....that is why they are mostly closed. Just a few miles north of me they got a frost, which will bring my season to an abrupt halt :(

I'm hardly either. More like a blind squirrel who occasionally finds a nut!
I take these inside, with only one light source, overhead and draped with a white nylon covering to help offset the brightness of the bulb (no tent).
I then use a piece of black cloth I rummaged from my wifes sewing stash (not the best, but its ok). I then use handheld mirrors to bounce some of the ambient light onto the subject that I want a little more highlight....
Bigger mirror for more light, smaller for a more focused one.
Hope that helps.....now I need to get back to my studio

Eddie,
The lighting in most of your shots is wonderful. Can you take a photo of the setup to show where the light source, camera and subject are in relation to each other?

Eddie me thinks you do jest....maybe not a professional if you don't get paid for shots but you certainly have an excellent knowledge of lighting or just a natural flair for it at least. If the day job ever folds I'm sure you could sell some of your images...or perhaps even sell your DIY studio design ;)

I agree, especially when your specific style consists of awesome land- and seascapes. ;)
Seriously, I need to push out of my comfort zone. Maybe I should only shoot wide angle for a while or something. Besides, I've wanted a Lensbaby for a while and this seemed like a good rationalization ("no, honey, it's not another toy, really, it's a way for me to grow as an artist.")

3 pictures of flowers. two are very small, about a quarter of an inch in size (4-6 mm), the other is a cluster about 3 inches across (75mm). I am always amazed at the beauty of small flowers that are almost always ignored by those looking for flowers. The first of the small ones was shot with the TAmmy 70-300 on Macro, the second was shot with the kit lens. The bloom cluster was shot with the Tammy.

Very pretty Bird of Paradise! This I think would be a good entrant in the Energizer Ultimate Photo Contest that National Geographic is running in their magazine.
My job recently picked up the marketing for the campaign which is very nice considering I am a photo/digital camera enthusiast myself.
The contest gives photographers an opportunity to get pictures published in the December issue of National Geographic magazine as well as earn a trip to the scenic and VERY photographic Greek Islands.
All the entrants need do is enter their best photos. Entry is open until June 30th. National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson serves as a contest judge, and will also be doling out photography tips and participating in a Q&A session on the contest website.
A link for how to enter and some of the previous years entrants are below.
