Just been scanning some old pics from the mid 80's..
Back then I had an Olympus OM2 & and OM10 - they shared various lenses.
This shot I remembr taking both on Film (this example) Kodak Gold 2 - and on
slide - one was the OM10 and one was the OM2 - so I am not sure which
camera took which - I suspect the OM10 was on film..
This shot should have not been as good as this - I used a Vivitar 24mm wide
lens coupled with a Vivitar 2x converter which made it capeable of closer images.

Lovelly shot Calico, I like that composition and the way the green in the lower right balances the exposure. Nice.

So
I took the KM A200 out into the garden this evening for a shot of this little yellow daisy - used the close up attachment lens

Love that first shot Eddie.

Joseph, if you don't mind me mentioning it you've got a bit of nuclear red there (red channel blown). I do it all the time and haven't worked out how to avoid it but I gather one is supposed to check the three colour histogram isn't blown because the combined histogram is misleading.

It's the same D80 - but it does seem a bit different!
This shot is very much how it was looking when I spotted it - and sometimes
it is good to be a little larger than life - so I might have a little play with this one...

Wengler, GoneTomorrow: thanks, it was a simple effect. Ps is really a great tool to edit images. :) I did some enhancing with levels, boosted the vibrance, duplicated the layer. Then I remember adding a zoom blur to the bottom layer and a mask to the upper layer.

I took these 4 flower shots while visiting the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna. They were taken with a Casio Exilim EX-S600 which also goes to show that even a higher end (considering this camera sells close to $300 range) point and shoot camera can take great pictures. Also none of these pictures where photoshopped and all where taken on macro setting. Btw I have more flower pics from the same place but for first photo posting starting of with 4. Also all comments welcome :)

Very nice photos Sophie. The colours are nice.
However, I think they are just little bit underexposed, if they were a little bit brighter they would be better. Also, all the flowers are in the center of the frame, Often, if you move them a bit to the side, it will make the picture more interesting.
Other than that, they are great.

sophie19
12-31-2008, 11:46 PM
Thank you all for your comments and Prospero thats interesting that you say that they shouldn't be centered , cause I always thought that for flowers especially it should be in the center , but hey I'm just an amateur so always willing to learn :) And to everybody that commented and everybody in general on this flower forum your pics are also simply stunning :D

Happy New Year 2009 !!!!!!!

toriaj
01-02-2009, 12:48 PM
It's a succulent. They're pretty common in Utah and Wyoming. I have one like it in my front yard right now. I don't know the name of the kind, but Wikipedia says that
Succulent plants, also known as succulents or fat plants, are water-retaining plants adapted to arid climate or soil conditions. Succulent plants store water in their leaves, stems and/or roots. The storage of water often gives succulent plants a more swollen or fleshy appearance than other plants, also known as succulence.

This is a combined effort -My daughter recieved this Rose from her boyfriend.
I photographed it with the D80 & Tamron 28 - 200 (wrong lens for close up I know!).
She did most of the PP work, I just put the frame round at the end.
(PS - she wants to take up photography!)

TheWengler
02-15-2009, 11:57 AM
Wow, this thread hasn't been posted in for awhile. Must be winter. I see a couple problems with that one Geoff. 1st is the lighting. IMO the top of the rose should be lit even with everything else or brighter. If you're using a pop up flash then I'm not sure there's much you can do about that w/o changing the composition. If you were using that SB-600 in your sig, then bounce that thing! I'm not sure if you can take it off camera, but that's work too. 2nd thing is the black background looks photoshopped. The line between the flower and the background is too sharp. I think the composition is good by itself, but maybe doesn't work with the lighting set up. The colors are also very nice.

So, when are you going to give your daughter your camera and get a D300?

Geoff Chandler
02-15-2009, 05:10 PM
As usual I couldn't get the SB600 to do what I wanted - tossed it back in the case and gave up with it.
Just the pop up flash - no usefull natural light available.
Rachel cut the image out and paisted it on a black background.
Top of the rose is really dark - in real life.
Rachel is happy with it like it is as it looks how it did (aside from a black background)

eddie - I am loving all your flower shots - I hope you make the transition to DSLR OK - I found it a bit hard to start with
P&S has so much more Depth of field - so if you have a half decent lens - the images can look pretty good. DSLR will reward you greatly - but the images need to be coaxed out and worked at more

Here is an image of our very new Hyacinths just coming up...

eddie - as someone here says (George) 'Once you go DSLR you'll never go back'
There is a large element of truth to this, it is much quicker and more responsive, but it takes a while to adjust to. There are leneses out there that can be left on for most of the time. I would shy away from mega zooms as they ultimately are of a lower quality. Most short range zooms are pretty good, some also cover the macro range (my Sigma 17 -70 for example).
Good luck deciding and let us know some of your thoughts.

Eddie, now I'm just depressed. Those photos you post that I admire so much are taken with a P&S !

Geoff Chandler

P&S can be excellent but at times they are limited
Swings and roundabouts! I have been delighted with some
of my P&S shots, but not always!
Eddie is a natural - he'd get great shots with a box brownie!!!!!
meanwhile
I was out today and stopped on the Purley way Croydon for some landscape
shots - knelt down for a close up of the dafs while I was there
This is unedited (OK resized!!!)
Full manual exposure and manual focus Manual WB 5000K - direct sunlight!!
(Not a good idea as it usually washes out details)
I reckon the ability to go manual was what made this photo work for me
(I might play with it later)

Anyone have any tips for great flower shots, or is it something that only I can learn / not learn myself? The city I'm in prides itself as the world capital of peonies, they are building a large new opera house in the shape of a peony which will open during a huge peony festival next month. There is a peony park, etc., so there will be flowers everywhere. Any suggestions?

Far be it from me to offer advice as a person of knowledge....but I can share what I have been happy with, after trying various exposures.
As in any subject, you must have a good understanding of how you want to express yourself via the "flower". You must also figure out how any given flower presents itself best. Some do best in a close-up or macro exposure I've found, some, a whole frame with some room around them, some do both well. If it outdoors, you must consider lighting and backdrop as well if you are doing a whole frame composition.

I'll give you a few examples of stuff I pulled up, not what I feel is my best, but I'm sorry, my organization is non existent. I just download, look, and forget about them for the most part, but I think these might help explain what I'm trying to share....

This lily is a very plain and simple flower, lacking vibrant colors or petals that can really catch light and contrasting, so, I had to take that into consideration when trying to capture it....that is why I wanted no competing background (colors) in it.

Avoid direct sunlight, generally, it usually over blows the fine detail and
is too contrasty for the camera.
Get in close and avoid distracting backgrounds.
Make sure your steady and using a fast enough shutter speed - close ups can blur easily with camera shake.
Take several shots - try different angles and compositions.
Have fun!

OK: it's all about composition and feeling: check. Just like always, and who knows if I am good at it.

No direct sunlight: ummmm.... check. I'll try to override my personal preference for direct lighting. Of course, the pollution is pretty bad here, so maybe that counts even when it's "sunny" :).

Check background: check. I'll watch for it.

Eddie, are most of your shots, such as the last, natural light?

Rules are there to be broken from time to time - I just advise avoiding direct sunlight - otherwise it is very hard work to produce the image you are hoping for...

I try to use natural light if at all possible, it keeps it real, if you know what I mean. A pain to use, BUT....if you can use a tripod, you can close down your aperture to control the bright light, but you'll need to adjust shutter speed down as well, thus the need for it. It can really isolate your subject, and bring out the slightest detail too....even if you look like a blabbering fool standing ankle deep in flowers.

I have a suggestion. You say your city is famous for the peonies, right?
Try and capture a very low projection, get me one flower as point of interest, but yet at an angle that allows you to show its accompany brothers and sisters and any famous "landmark", like a church, courthouse, etc, in the background.

Go.... :o

I vastly prefer natural light, and only have the on-board flash in any case, so that's very good.

It so happens there is a landmark (I'll look around for other locations too). I visited it the other day and had already decided to try and incorporate it. Then I searched on the web and found this from the same place! I think it is heavily processed though, and the style indicates a Chinese photographer. It may even be three images (not sure), one for the foreground, one for the background, and one for the sky (the sky in China hasn't been that blue in decades).

When I was in high school I briefly joined the marching band. I learned from the drum major to stand still in line, even if a bee flew up my nose. Fortunately I don't have a good macro lens, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Edit: This isn't my picture, just so you know!

Nice shots, I really like the shallow DOF. The second one does not seem blown on my screen, though you could perhaps enhance the detail on the flower with some curves.

The Kiron 105 f/2.8 was made by a company called Kino Precision in the eighties. Kino Precesion made lenses until the late eighties for many different companies, like Vivitar (some of the Series 1 lenses are made by Kino) and Panagor. They also sold some of their lenses under their own brand, Kiron.
The brand used to have a very good reputation. The Kiron 105 f/2.8 is one of the best lenses they produced.

It's manual focus, and it doesn't meter with my camera (so I have to set everything manually, including flash output by guessing) but the lens is very sharp and the bokeh is great.

Sorry guys - fallen a bit behind here recently...
jekostas: Love that Blue image on the previous page, nice and sharp too
great exposure and contrast.
swpars: - Lovely blossom - nice delicate shade too
eddie haskell: what can I say? - excellent images as ever!!!
GabrielC: - Love that early morning violet - that frost and water droplets
really make the photo - nice sharp focus too. - Also that forest snow-bell (Snow drop?)
really nice sharpo close up and the white is excellent!
PhilD: - Tulip in the rain - really nicely composed image, I like the way
it all sprouts from the left, kind of, and the water dropletslook great -
lovely colour by the way.

Spose I should put a recent image in as well while I am here!!!
This is a pic taken on our dining room table - by the french windows -
around 8am - so not strong light- but fairly well dispersed - I just used
a white birthday card to reflect a little back on the dark side.
Uses the grotty old tripod (with timer) and slow shutter speed
I took several closer images - but this was still a half second @:f5.6
;)

Thanks - I tend to agree - though sometimes it really works well - in my case I did it after posting a similar shot, but all colour, elsewhere (now posted below).
I think all the leaves etc make it a little busy looking for a single rose (despite
a little frame working) - and it was commented on as such...
This one was not quite as sharp either/also - the brown that was the table below looked a little odd - that was what
first triggered the idea of B&W treatment.
I appreciate your honest comments

I like that shot Gone.

It might be worth playing with it in post a little more and bring out those colours some more. I'd clone out the one in the bottom left and really make it a rule of thirds photo.

I could be wrong suggesting more saturation, I just love those colours you've got in there and wonder if stronger would work.

Thanks. More saturation? I think I moved the slider in elements to something like 40 already, but I will open the saturation throttle, so to speak, and see if it takes. And I hear you about the ROT, it could be tweaked here, which isn't a problem since this shot is about a 50% crop so there's some wiggle room.

I was thinking of cloning rather than cropping btw.

You think that by just cloning out the lower left flower it will adhere more to ROT? I see. I will take a shot at it, but I may have some difficulties getting the clone to look smooth enough, as the detail isn't entirely featureless around it.

Dread Pirate Roberts
04-21-2009, 07:11 AM
I could be out of my mind I just mention what went through my head whilst looking at your shot. The reason I think just cloning would make it more ROT is that you'd be removing superflous detail that contradicts the ROT of your shot.

To clone out when you've got detail around it I use a big radius like 150-300 pixels and around 50-70% hardness. I usually succeed cloning textured areas that way. Worth a try but it may not work.

Here is what I had in mind, I'll remove it if you don't like it as it's probably bad form to edit someone elses' artwork. Now that I've seen this I think your version was nicer.
I masked the red/pink as increasing the sat of that turned it into nuclear red, but I increased it on the green yellow.

Nice clone work, I'm pretty bad at it unless it's something very easy against a solid background. And I don't mind the edit, we ought to have a permissions feature like POTN does so no one steps on someone else's toes.

Same with this one...

Wow Geoff you have some amazing stuff there! Is shooting flowers your specialty? If not it should be!

I don't know if I have a speciality - thanks for the encouragement though.
I guess I have liked photographing flowers for years - but not only flowers.
I just got myself a new lens - for general walkabout. I suppose this is part of
my lens evolution - a Nikon 16 - 85 which will basically replace the Sigma 17 - 70. However - the Sigma does go quite a lot closer - so I will keep it untill I get around to purchasing a dedicated macro
Meanwhile - close ups - even if not macro - are quite pleasing it seems
This is one of my first shots with the new lens....similar to one I took the other day on the Sigma:

I've attached another rose photo; black and white this time.
Can anyone tell me how to embed my photos within the entry?
I've seen how to attach and post a link but... do I need to use HTML?

Your photos are great, Geoff!

Thanks for the kind comment - we're all learning all the time!
If you want your photo within your entry you will need a host site - a photo
site such as Photobucket. Once you have uploaded some images you can copy
the address easily and paste it in your text with before and after
and it should work OK
(Try to resize to no higher than around 570 and no wider than 900)

Ah, okay. I do have a host website- Shutterfly but when I did the img before and after thing, it just put the link there. I think maybe I copied the wrong link. I'll try again later.
Thanks for the tips!!

The whites in this one look much better. Nice shot!

After you attach the photos, click the paper clip again and it will list the photos there. Then click on them to place them in the text. Shrink them down though. ;)

Faisel - that's an amazing looking bud, is it really that colour??

Here's a tricky one I took today in the rain - tricky as the colour
is so hard to nail!

~ and a close up of one bloom
these actually have lighter tips - it's not due to the light...
Raining today - so it was wet out there!!
