Posted this in another thread but wanted to post it here to. Took this with a Canon S5 IS in Super Macro Mode. Fast shutter speeds (1/1000+), aperture @ f2.7, ISO80 (really bright outside).

I liked how this one turned out...it's a rose from a Mother's Day flower bouquet.

Adiseshanaik......what flower is that???

well here are the same flowers from the bouquet me and my sister gave my mom...the only difference is that the flowers are well...either dead or almost dead....

Here's a clematis shot I grabbed a couple of days ago. I ran it through the Elements smart fix routine to see what it did. As far as I could see it just seemed to remove the tint of yellow the original had as I took it with low sun.

So glad to hear you talk about the fix - I try so hard at times to get the colour, contrast & exposure spot on straight out of the camera - I should let myself a little slack sometimes!!

Thanks Geoff, I know what you mean about trying to get it right in the camera I often take ages & lots of shots. Smart fix in that case seemed to work ok but it doesn't always work. Here is a shot of the same flower I took this morning. It has opened more now & the colour has faded a bit plus the light was not so early morning yellowy & more indirect. So lots of differences really. Anyway smart fix just washed it out & ruined it completely. I tried just using auto levels & auto sharpening which I think has worked better. The breeze was a problem this morning plus I do hand hold these so with the shady light levels I had to use big apertures & lowish speeds. Might try again later when there is more light and see what the difference is.

Whatever you did with this one - I love it - you have retained all the light delicate shades as far as i can see.
I know what you mean about the breeze - it waits untill you have everything just perfectly in focus and framed - then the darn thing flaps back and forth like a thing possesed!!

Phill, I really like your shot. I've seen so many flowers with shallow DOF that this one really "stands out" :D The blurred background just makes it perfect.

Wow, Rooz, I've never seen a flower shot like that! (Of course, I don't think I've ever seen a passion flower lol) Seems like you're getting into some very unusual, abstract shooting lately. Is it a temporary "stretch" for you, or is it what you're really interested in? (I think it's cool by the way)

Adiseshanaik

Toriaj, thanks for the appreciation. these were shot in RAW. Basic conversion to RAW was done in Silkypix with contrast, brightness, colors etc.... In PS-CS2 Tiff was converted to JPEG at higher resolution. These JPEGs are taken to Combine ZM for stacking and final output is again TIFF. The resultant stacked output was taken to PS-CS2 again for cloning and trimming and converted to JPEG again at higher resolution. Final touch up was done at DPP and saved in JPEG again at lower size. Hope I have explained fully. Any specific queries, would love to answer.

combining several exposures of the same object with different focus points to get the whole subject perfectly sharp.

Adam, wtf are you on about that shot is stunning. i love it. (except the square crop)

AdamW
05-22-2008, 08:41 PM
Thanks, Rooz. :) I guess I was referring to the fact that while I do really like how that shot ended up, it wasn't what I was going for when I was shooting, it took a LOT of processing, and I was forced to do that crop to remove some elements that just had to go. Mostly, I'm feeling frustrated that I couldn't capture the images that I'd imagined and set out to get. When I look at that picture now, I think, "That wasn't what I wanted!" When I look at that picture in a couple of days, I'll probably think, "Hey! Pretty damn cool!"

I did end up with a nice shot of the housefly that was harassing me and dive-bombing the flowers--I posted it over in the insect thread.

Lukas, very nice shots. I like them all.
In the second shot, did you add the effect in post processing, is it a long exposure that you zoomed in towards the end of the exposure, or is it a combination of flash and zooming?
Either way, I really like the effect. Very nice.

Adam, very nice shot. Beautiful DOF and colours.

Adam, Rooz, Dennis - Thanks a lot.

Adam - My mom has really been into peonies lately. They're all over her house. Unfortunately the ants seem to love them too. Your shot almost looks like a flame. Very nice.

Dennis - I did the zooming during the exposure thing. I haven't tried it with a flash, but that might be cool.

Prospero

Thanks Adam.

Lukas, with the flash can give interesting results too, because it will make sure that there is extra emphasize on one part of the picture. I did that when I just got my camera. The result wasn't any good, but that was because I was still getting used to my camera (it was my first DSLR and even my first camera with manual controls). I think the technique has some potential.

Thanks for the kind comments - very encouraging.
I have to say that it is mostly down to that 17 - 70 lens which is really nice!
OK - so, yes, I did have to compose the picture and point it in the right direction.. that, coupled with a load of new settings I am trying out.
This is why I am so adamant that I should stick with that lens and work all my others around it.
Cheers - and keep up all the good work with the photos everyone - great stuff here.
BTW - LBGChris - I really liked your photo - really natural and it's what inspired me to have a go

Glad to see you got back OK. I find those reds very difficult to get often mine just looked fluorescent. Haven't tried any with my new Olympus yet but here's a blue geranium shot. I'm just getting to grips with the very different DoF on a dslr. I think this is the same type of flower that you captured recently Prospero. This was shot with the 40-150 kit lens I was quite pleased with it as it's not supposed to be a macro lens. Focus distance was probably around 1.5 to 2 feet away.

Phill D
06-09-2008, 12:19 AM
Here's another shot cropped closer I was amaized in this that the DoF was less than the depth of the flower. Might even have to get my tripod out. Plus those 10 Megapixel images do allow a lot of cropping. File size is a bit large though - I'm going to have to start deleting stuff ;)

Thank You for the comments. I have only been taking pictures for a year so compared to the many superb photographers on this forum I am a beginner. I have no training what so ever so the shots I get are on a trial and error basis.
As far as these shots I use a nikon D 80 with a 18-55 mm lens and a macro light ring so I could get close and not have it washed out.

I disagree - I like the DoF, and the photo is great!!!
Flowers in the sun are tricky - particularly Yellows as the contrast makes them wash out so eaily - so you did really well with this one!!

Adam, I love #2, looks delicious and so real. #4 is just insanely good! I might love it even more if it had greater DOF ... or maybe it's just those vague vertical green stems (?) that are distracting. Anyway, it's still an incredible shot.

Geoff, I always admire your shots (and the way you get them in-camera) but this one is just tops. I love the lighting and the clarity right there in the pollen.

Oooh - I seem to be a lone poster at the moment!
Just got my new 'Bridging/walkaround' lens to replace the
Sigma 28 - 200
It's the Tamron 28 - 200 - this is a brand new lens not 2nd
hand like the Sigma
Here's a quick close up of a Snapdragon as I always called them
200mm, 320ISO, 500th sec F8 (speed used because of wind)
Kind of a first try of the lens test ...

Rooz
07-08-2008, 05:22 AM
you may need to readjust geoff. sigmas generally have more contrast than tamrons. that shot looks quite flat to me.

Geoff Chandler
07-08-2008, 06:14 AM
AHA! Rooz - you are on the Ball!!!
I was fiddling - My D80 nowadays is left 95% time on Auto contrast
and Auto Sturation (I am not proud of it - but it works!!)
However
After a test shot on the cat on the bed which exagerated his colour and contrast - I popped it back into manual 'Normal' for those settings
Then
I went outside and took some photos - forgetting I was back on normal
(I will post some comparisons elswhere...)
? I thought it was the other way around - So - Tamrons are less contrasty than Sigmas...Suits me!
But - I am pretty pleased with the general result any way, and once I have played a bit I am sure it will do quite well as a general walkaround.

Rooz
07-08-2008, 06:21 AM
not 100% sure about those models in particualr, but certianly the sigma's i've owned and/ or used have been very contrasty in comparison to the tammy's.

the one above your latest, (purple flowers), is hell sharp and the purples are perfect. i missed that last time i came to this page.

Geoff Chandler

Going back to those dark blue/purply Delphiniums - I tried an even closer
shot with the new Tammy. OK with close ups my Sigma 17 - 70 is my best
glass (not got a dedicated macro yet) - so I am not expecting miricles here..
But - I am satisfied that it will grab the occasional close up for me if that's
the only lens I am out and about with..
Here's 2 images:
First is an orig photo - just framed to make it more presentable -
2nd is a crop from the orig shot - showing that there is a reasonable amount
of detail in there.
~ I think I will be happy with this allrounder lens. :)
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff217/geof0711/Smalls%20bin/DBDelphiniums007sm.jpg

& here's the direct crop...(BTW - shallow DOF meant the centre of this flower was not
quite the sharpest point - but it's OK really)

eddie haskell ~ a few interesting shots - not quite following the normal trend - interesting lighting. I like them all, they are somewhat different to how I take photos and as such intrigue me. They are beautifully taken - nice job!
Phill D ~ I like the close up of the poppy - and the rose has some very nice subtle colour tiones which tyou have captured very well.
Paradox ~ I don't usually feel this sort of shot works for me - but this is great IMHO. I think it is all about where the point of focus is - I think this is spot on - you got the top bang on focus and the rest fades to a blur which looks great!!

Geoff Chandler
07-12-2008, 12:02 PM
Still messing with my new Tamron 28 - 200.
This sort of shot is not usually one I would use that lens for out of choice -
but I am just trying it out still at the moment.
I am quite pleased with it - at first I thought this was a bit too contrasty
I know I tend to like things more bland than most - so maybe it's OK.
I took this shot twice - once on 0ve then this one on +0.3ev.
I felt this was a tad better. Tweaking the ove version resulted in a near identical
shot to this one - so I am posting this - straight off the camera, aside from
framing and resizing - comments are very welcome.

Hey all, long time reader, first-time poster.

Anyways, I was just messing around with a new camera (well, sort of) today, and got the following picture. Besides a quick resize, this pic is straight from the camera. While it's obviously not perfect (the stems are blown out slightly in the centre, though it does show the colour variation from yellow -> white properly), this was taken with the camera module on my phone.

This just shows two things:
1) It's more about the photographer than the equipment ~ it's a nice shot
camera phone or otherwise.
2) Mobile phones are getting beter and better built in cameras these days.

Thanks for the kindly hello! I've been a reader of these forums (and the site in general) for quite a while so I figure'd I'd join. As to the second point, I did a little research and came up with the following on the camera module (phone is a Nokia N95, btw)

1. Carl Zeiss 5-element optics (Tessar branding)
2. 28MM equivalent fixed focal-length
3. F2.8
4. Autofocus (brutally slow, but at least it's there)
5. Either a 1/4" or 1/5" sensor, not sure which.

While the sensor is smallish and the autofocus can be brutal (averages 0.8 seconds) carrying my phone essentially means being able to carry a fixed-length 28MM camera with optics designed specifically for that length and sensor.

The phone is a Nokia N95-1. It's the original European version but all versions of the N95 (there are four) use the same optics. Apparently one of the newer smartphones Nokia has out (the N82) uses the same optics and sensor but upgrades the flash from LED-based to Xenon. As it stands, the optics-based results (chromatic aberrations, edge-to-edge sharpness, distortion) are all fantastic. If I could find a hack to get my hands on a RAW output (which apparently exists) I'd love to see what the sensor is capable of, even if it's only a 1/5" or 1/4" sensor. The lens is a Carl Zeiss "Tessar" branded, f/2.8, 28mm fixed-length piece.

There's been a greater push towards better quality cameras in phone (especially in the high-end), with Nokia offering Zeiss lenses, and LG and Samsung offering Kreuznach lenses in a few of their phones. Sony used to lead the pack in camera phones (and they have an 8MP model coming out) but they apparently outsourced the sensor production to Samsung, and as such the image quality has suffered.

Anyways, I think I paid... $300(?) for the phone? A little on the expensive side for a cellphone, but if you consider I got a 28MM prime Zeiss lens tacked on, it's a helluva deal for something just to be able carry around every day.

My first attempts.
Couldn't get much closer as I was already pushing the focus range.

I forgot to mention that no touch-ups were done except for cropping.

You can attach them by clicking the paperclip in the reply box. After you attach them you can click the down arrow next to the paper clip to place them in your post. Your images will have to meet the size requirements to do it this way. You can also embed them from Flickr.

Thanks TheWengler.
I used the "manage attachments" in the "addtional options" box because nothing happened when I poked the paperclip (or anything else).
Thanks for your help.

Well that's the same box that'd pop up. Glad you figured it out.

The 2nd and 5th picture are my favorite. Add some contrast to them and they'll really pop. I think in the 1st shot you need to choose a better angle so you don't get those blow outs. Since you're exposing for shade, the parts of the flower hit by sunlight appear white. For the most part it's best when your subject is all in shade or all in sunlight as cameras have trouble dealing with both at the same time.

I'm new to this stuff. I'm not sure what you mean by blow outs but I think you mean where the sun hits the detail is gone and it's sort of just a bright blur?
My camera is basically a point and shot with a few extras but really it is without any real opportunities for manual adjustment..........Sony CyberShot DSC-H10.
I'm going to experiment though and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the encouragement.

TheWengler
07-31-2008, 03:04 PM
Yeah, a blow out is a spot in the image where detail is lost due to overexposure (appears white). In your case it's due to the large range in the brightness of the light hitting your subject.

That first one is my favorite Rooz. I'm a fan of the flower shots taken from the underside of the flower. I think I actually stole that idea from one of your shots back when you posted some picture of a yellow flower/blue sky from the underside (I think ).

From the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco.

Oh wow!! there are some awesome shots being posted here - I haven't been around to look for a while - too many to comment on - so well done everyone!!
Driving home from Somerset this last weekend we decided to call in at Wisley for a while - it was a greyish day - but still both me and my wife were snapping away (not arguing!!).
This shot is only cropped to square and a frame added - but I felt the side information was irrelevent to the shot.

Sometimes it's good to look at an overall view of flowers instread of them isolated on their own..

Generally I'm not a fan of the square crop either. However, I have been guilty of giving into it on occasion. I like to think of cropping as a way to make an image better. I don't think a square crop adds much to an image. The rule of 3rds doesn't work very well in a square crop either. I think you'd have a little more to work with if you took it in portrait orientation. Another idea would be to take it at an angle so that the flower is leaning to the right a bit. Then you could do a horizontal crop where the flower is leaning towards the open space. Whatever you do Geoff, it's a great shot...well, as long as you don't crop out the flower and the bee. :p Here's my crop suggestion...

Took a few shots of a yellow Lilley we have - used our table as a background.
I was playing around with close up on the Sigma 17 - 70. It does go very
close, but I feel macro needs a bit of a longer focal length in order to isolate
the background..
Here's a general shot:

Interesting flower I found while hiking through a mountain in Puerto Rico. I captured it attempting to give the image a 3-dimensional look.

I've tried shots of these flowers before & the colours just seem to glow so I was just trying to explore the envelope of settings with my kit lens at full mag 42mm. I managed to get this shot hand held at 1/10s f5.6 and iso400 as the light was fading. I cropped it about 20% and added a little bit of USM. This is the best I've done in these conditions so far.

Just bought the Kenko extension tubes today. Here is a sample of my first "macro outing." I am pretty happy with it but more excited to do more macro work This shot was taken with the 12mm + 20mm tubes attached to the Nifty-Fifty! Only adjustments in PS were levels and a slight bump in saturation in the green background only. Oh, and the obvious horizontal crop. C&C always welcome. Cheers!

Sorry, repost from the "Canon DSLR Photo of the Day" thread:o

great colours and composition Z. i like it alot. i think you may have fractionally missed the focus point on the tip.

LOL I sure did:o, A slight breeze today. My first lesson learnt today was how shallow the depth of field is when shooting macro and how easily you can loose your focus point. Live and learn right? Other than that, thanks for the comments. I always appreciate the constructive criticism as well as the positives. :)

I guess fall starts today. It has rained all day, and the temps stayed in the low 50's. Dipping into the 40's tonight. Come first frost, all my flowers die till spring. I hope this is not the last bouquet....

Normally I press the last bouquet in a fold of my speedos, and take them out to sniff their beauty in the dead of winter....and, it helps keep my speedos smelling garden fresh too, which....I'm sure all of you can appreciate.
