I like the colour of this one.
(I admit to changing the background as it was really horrid
I also cropped it to square and used the colour for the frame)
Being as I am not one for messing with photos usually - I would
appreciate any comments. The orig flower is as it was straight off the camera.

I like your shot Geoff but Im more impressed with your finishing touches to the picture. I like the frame and the pp done to the edge of the photo. I also like the typestyle you used for your name. I have it here somewhere among the thousands of faces I have but I cant remember the name. Very subtle and very clean looking. Good job.

Rooz, Geoff, i call you flowers images posted here a fine art of photography, wish i could deliver something like this. (no compliment, i am serious about this).

that floor image you posted has more saturated colours, there are less leaves which balances the yellow/ browns with the greens and the green foliage itself is much nicer to look at.

if you have the RAW file to that one i'd seriously think about doing a HDR on it or bump the levels up a tad to really make the colour pop out. it's a beautiful image, don;t sell yourself short. :)

different lighting take where alot of flash comes thru into the front element of the lens, (sb800 positioned to right rear of rose shooting up and towards lens at 45deg allowing the petals to diffuse most of the light), creating a kind of "fogginess" that makes it more subtle. i noticed how it makes the contrast between shadows and midtones very smooth aswell. interesting result. i wonder how this will work for portraits.

That's beautiful. It's funny, but I think the diagonal sidewalk is what makes the shot special -- even though the sharpness is what I love about it, the diagonal nature of the composition keeps me looking. Nice work!

Recentlt purchased a Canon SD800 IS. Thought I would post some shots I took while learning the features of my new point and shoot.

How do I get my file size down to the upload requirements? All my photos are WAY over the 19.5KB....smallest I have is over 2500KB.

When I need to "shrink" several pics I use Google's Picasa 2. I used cheat by selecting the folder I want to shrink and clicking the button for e-mail. This would significantly shrink the pics to somethign reasonable.

They have updated now to include a button to "export" the pictures and you can select the dimension and saved detail you desire.

SpecialK
11-16-2007, 07:13 PM
First, if you use "jpg", the file can be up to 234 kb (check the list carefully).

The Zoombrowser software you got with your camera will work. Do this:

1. Install the zoombrowser software.
2. Launch Zoombrowser.
3. On the directory tree on the left side of the window, select the folder where the image is located.
4. Near the top of the main window are 3 tabs labelled "Zoom Mode", "Scroll Mode" and "Preview Mode". Use whichever you like best to find the thumbnail.
5. Click on the thumbnail to highlight it.
6. Click "Edit" on the left of the window.
7. From drop down list, click "Export Still Image". New window opens.
8. Click box "Resize during export"
9. Click "Long Side" circle.
10. Enter 800 or 900 in the "pixels" box.
11. Click on the "Calculate" button if you want to see the size the file will be. It has to be under 234k for the forum, but typically under 100K is fine at 900 pixels...
12. If needed, click the "change file type" box and select "jpg" (you're not really changing it), then move the "quality" slider to "High". Check the file size again.
13. Choose the location to save the file. If it is in the same directory as the original, the new image will have a "-1" added to the original file name.
14. Click finish at the bottom.
15. Name the new image whatever you want (keep the "jpg" extension) and you should be good to post here.

Unusualy colour for one of these.
This one under exposed -0.7 - yellow tends to blow out
very easily - and the background was dark - think I got it
about right. Not one of my best - but I just liked it

Yellow flowers often seem to pop out like that - especially with a darker background. The other reason is your large apperture - which gives a shallow depth of field - the flower is sharp - so you get a vivid line edge to the flower. Yellow flowers also tend to 'blow' a little - so I find under exposing them helps a bit. Suggestions? - Maybe a slightly smaller apperture, not too much in order to keep the background out of focus, and under expose a bit.

The other shot is cetrtainly a bit on the bright/over exposed side - notice the purple fring around the flowers.
Still it's all good fun!!

Please keep posting your shots - they are very interesting

Edit - did you mean why is the 2nd pic flower glowing?? - because of the purple fring if thats what you meant?
It's over exposed - that's probabl;y 90% of it - great effect though!!!

jsnail
11-30-2007, 05:12 AM
Geoff, yes I was referring to the purple flower, but I'll definitely put your suggestions re: the yellow flower to good use! When you say I should underexpose the yellow flower just a bit, are you referring to the exposure compensation or just setting my aperture and shutter speed to underexpose everything just a bit?

Ah, and as far as the purple flower goes, that was actually the only pic that came out. It was highly cropped (probably about 70-80%) but the glowing wasn't quite as evident in the full size picture. I didn't realize it was such a simple answer as to just fix the exposure! I figured I had my camera settings all jacked up...I mean honestly, glowing flowers?? lol :)

Geoff Chandler
11-30-2007, 12:34 PM
Some lenses and some cameras are a touch prone to purple fringing
(chromatic abberations) some more than others - usually not very
noticable unless you crop/blow up a small portion of the photo - it is also
excaserbated by over exposure at times - seems like yours was merely
a combination of all those things - probably the least guilty were the camera and lens
Cool effect though!!!

$100 dollars..not bad.. thats only like one pair of jeans I would have to sacrifice....j/k...before I got into photography all my extra money went to jeans and heels...now I am having to balance the two! I was looking at some lenses today (macro) and they were really expensive like about $600. Is that normal for a macro lens. I already have two lenses that came with my camera 14-42mm and the 40 -150mm.

Rooz
01-01-2008, 02:31 PM
you could try some extension tubes first. they are cheap and will fit on your existing lens. the idea of them is that it enables you to focus closer to your subject. it has a similar effect to a proper macro lens for a fraction of the cost. not sure if kenko make an olympus mount, but am sure oly will make their own.

Nice picture.
If you wanted black background you could have done the following:
- Use a faster shutterspeed
- Use a higher F-number
- Use a lower ISO

In that way, you can make sure that the subject is primarily lit by the flash and that the light of the background is no longer registered. If this doesn't work you may need to raise the distance between the subject and background.

Steve - thanks for the kind comment.

This is a close up of an African Violet. Just cropped off the blurred R/H side a bit, then framed for presentation. This is often a tricky plant to get right as the colour usually goes a bit wrong. It seems a very sensitive hue to white balance correctly - notice how blue it goes in the shade - yet our eyes see the whole plant the purple colour of the part in the light.

Geoff Chandler

Here's another shot - a bit of a cheat in a way. The previous one was quite close up,
f8 as it turns out now I look at the info, but at 200mm (300equiv) so it is still limited
depth of field.
This one is a crop however - not just squared but a closer crop of a larger image
I have done this before, you get a larger depth of focus in trade for loss of reolution -
a bit like using a digital zoom. This is also f8 from a 62mm shot (102mm equiv)
so, in effect, it demonstraits how much difference in DOF the focal length can make.
I know it's not a strictly fair comparison as I have made more of a crop
I reckon the extra Depth does help here though.

Did you use a flash for these Adam?

AdamW
03-12-2008, 07:00 PM
Yep, I used my 430EX with my home-made softbox and the 100mm macro. For the softbox, I took a plastic 32 oz yoghurt container and cut a rectangular hole in the bottom. A little duct tape on the edges of the hole for a snug fit. I lined the inside with foil tape. The container started to crack when I cut the hole, so I used some duct tape on the outside. I glued a circular piece of translucent white plastic onto the top. I used the container I did because the shape was good: it had a top opening that was significantly larger than the head of the flash (for better light softening) and was long/tall enough so that when attached to the flash the front was about parallel to the front of the 100 mm macro lens (so the lens won't cast a shadow.)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go open my early birthday present to myself, which just arrived via FedEx: a MR-14EX Ringlite! :D :D :D

Yep, blurred a little. I still liked it, so I posted it.

The hairs are lit by the sun. I was trying to figure out how to use the ringlite as fill flash. But yes, it is magical.

Photos were taken at 9.58 in the morning, they are nocturnal and only bloom at night, by the time i came home that evening they had both wilted. Ive only seen them once and have been saying here 4 years, there were 2 other wilted ones from the previous night, any info will be appriciated. Kind regards Jonathan.

Had a day out with my new/alternative/bridging lens Sigma 28 - 200
generally very happy with it, it is as much usefull as anything else.
The quality seems fine - maybe not quite as sharp as the 17 - 70 - but still
pretty good on the whole
This shot was taken at 95mm which is equiv of 145mm in 35mm film

I liked this one as it was yellow - most of them were orange

toriaj
03-27-2008, 12:06 PM
Geoff, that last one is awesome. I like the first one too, but I want to PP it to add some contrast (:D I know how you feel about PP)

Geoff Chandler
03-27-2008, 04:31 PM
toriaj ~ I believe you are talking about PPing the Daf/Nars or whatever it was
All I have done with that one is to brighten it about a 1/3 ~ 1/2 stop as I could quite judge the exposure at the time and went for a tad under to be on the safe side.
I am not against PPing as such - it's purely my personal choice that I like things to look basically realistic or natural (most of the time). I guess I have seen to many photographic books with photos that look so artificial and unrealistically contrasty and over saturated that I am leaning towards less PPing
So - is this what you had in mind - bear in mind I am still trying to retain a degree of trueness to the actual flower - ie the slightly inverted white petals were not quite white - but a sort of creamy white - the yellow was more like the left hand one really - but the more contrast version is Ok/acceptable

toriaj
03-27-2008, 11:52 PM
Yes, I do like the new version more. I might have tried to bring out the variation in the white petals, but I don't know if it would have worked. Also the yellow looks much warmer, that was caused by brightening?

Geoff Chandler

Here's a group of Orchids from the Glass house at RHS Wisley, Surrey, England.

Very nice shots Geoff. I think that lens is in good hands. I can see what Toriaj means with the Daf but I think you overdid it a bit with the processed image. Each to his/her own though. My favourite was the spiky one whatever that was. I love sharp images & the sharpness on that is fantastic. I thought DSLRs were supposed to give soft looking images - did you sharpen that one up somehow or was it straight from camera? The other thing I like is the way you add your sig to the shots & tone the colour with a colour in the image. A very nice touch, do you just guess a colour to use or do you somehow grab the colour from the image & make the text use that colour?

With the bird of paradise flower - I slightly increased contrast in curves - then the resized image is a tiny bit sharpened as quality always drops.
I often use the dropper tool to pick a colour from an inmage and use it in the border or signature - but not always.
When I took the picture I spent a bit of time composing as the background was quite distrating - so I used a bit of telelphoto and wider apperture to try to decrease depth of field.
The Daf is probably somewhere between the two images in reality - I went for the first - but I am always open to other opinions..
Thanks for the comments
Geoff

I like the focus point on the bud better in the first one but the composition better in the second one. As for your next set, I like the second one more. I think the first is too close, plus you lose some color. You using your new flash? Looks good!

AdamW
04-06-2008, 05:39 PM
Thanks, Lukas.

Yeah, I was experimenting with the ring flash and the 430ex as a second flash. For the first set, the 430ex is held directly above pointing straight down. For the tulip, the 430ex is below the flower, lighting through the petals. Both times with a DIY softbox and the ring flash as fill.

Rooz, thank you. I just used the Sepia Toning Action in the History palette with CS3. Then played with it a bit more to get it the way I liked .

Prospero, thanks.

AdamW, that shit is crazy! It reminds me of a marble. Great image.

Brian, I really like the colors on those amaryllis. Thanks for you comments! It was a very happy accident courtesy of light fall-off from the flash. I'm gonna print it out nice and big and see how it looks.

I say go for the 40D! You'll have a bit of a learning curve, but you'll see your work really improve and expand as you're better able to make your tools do what your brain imagines. (I have a feeling I'll be wanting to upgrade eventually to something with better noise performance, a better viewfinder, and Live View. Maybe when the 50D comes out in April 2009....)

Thanks, Rooz. I'm really happy with it. I actually have another shot that is little more exposed, but the lighter background really distracted from the feeling I was going for. I think it's a little soft, but can't decide if that's a bad thing.

I'll give it a try, but there's a lot of noise in that shot (I must've accidently had the ISO set too high) and I think it might show up more if I lighten things up.

to be honest, I think a little to much. you took a nice blue background and blew out the colours to bring out the flowers. I think a little less bright and you still might be able to make the flowers "pop" and keep the blue skies. (just my opinion!)

Thanks for your input, ghost. Well I attempted to make the background a little deeper blue to add a little more contrast while still bringing the colors out on the flowers but I haven't been using LR very long so I don't know if this is what you are talking about exactly or not.

Not sure if these belong here or somewhere else but they are flowers so I will put them here for now. These are a few edits I did of some shots I took a while back. TheWengler

I like these water droplet ones, but they look to be under exposed. If you're shooting in any kind of auto mode then a light colored subject might throw off the metering.

Thanks. I put them all through LR but didn't do much of anything other than switch the WB to Auto on them since it really brought out the whiteness of the flower. The 1st, 4th and 5th one I added a little lens vignetting...maybe that is what you are noticing? I usually shoot in Program mode rather than full Auto or Manual...most of these were set on either Spot or Center metering..

rx morph, yes that one looks better. For anything like white flowers, snow, etc. that takes up a large portion of the frame you should either shoot full manual or set EC to slightly over expose. This helps to make whites white instead of gray.

Great shot Prospero!! - I don't know that lens - but it grabbed my attention as you have the Sigma 17 - 70 like me. Is the Kiron a lot better for close up work?
I am sitting back and considering my lens situation - though I think a flash might have to be next on the list.

Prospero

Thanks for the suggestion, Adam. I took this picture indoors and it was lit by a bright desklamp. Next time I will try to supplement it with a bit of flash.

RX and Geoff, thanks for your comments.
Geoff, this lens is a lot better for macro work. The Sigma can only go to 1:2.3, while this lens can go to 1:1 (which means that objects with the size of the sensor can fill the frame). It can therefore magnify twice as good. Also, the Sigma can only reach that kind of magnification at 70mm with the subject less than 5 mm away from the front element. With this lens you have a lot more working distance (somewhere around 5 cm).

The Sigma is pretty good for closeup work, but it cannot match the magnification of a real macro lens. I have posted some more information of this lens in the thread in the Nikon dSLR board.

If you do not have a flash yet, I would definitly get that first. A flash can make a lot of difference when shooting in low light, it will make results look a lot more natural than with the pop-up flash. Besides, many people use a flash with macro too.

Thanks Adam! The last two are my favorites too. The are mounting rings for this. I have one that allows me to mount my 50mm lens backwards onto the body. There are also ones that allow you to mount one lens backwards onto the front of another lens (I don't have that ring yet). It can be a little bit of a pain because everything is manual and there's only one focus plane (at the min. focus distance). On the flip side it's way cheaper than buying another lens.

Ah, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't know what to do with yourself if you didn't have a macro lens. Another good one. I like how you chose a focus plane in the center of the bunch of flowers instead of one in the front. I think it makes the in focus flowers pop out more. Thanks for your comments.
