Phil - those shots look great to me!
Love the colour too - you got those close ups nice and sharp
you can see the fine hairs on the buds/seeds.
Personally I think non DSLR's can take excellent close up shots
as long as the ISO isn't pushed too high - plus they have the
assistance of extra depth of field - which is helpfull at times.

We went to the Columbus Rose Festival this weekend. The roses were past their prime, but it still gave me a little practice with my mk-III.

You really did a very good job controlling the depth of field in those.

The bokeh in the last one is great, it has a beautiful patern.

thanx. do you have this saved as custom setting for all applications or just macro stuff ?

Oh Boy oh boy oh boy!!
tricky to answer!
My 'standard' sort of settings (I guess) for natural photos would be
Sunshine and bright daylight - = Sunshine WB with +2blue in the middle of the day, +1 blue earlier morning and afternoon, maybe even middle red/blue later.
Overcast days would either be sunshine or Auto WB, again maybe +1blue ~ The Nikon seems very ready to go mad on the reds and these precautions seem to tame that right back to neutral.
Colourspace is something I am experimenting with - It seems type 3 is a touch
more colourfull and vivid, Type 1 seems pretty good alround - and Type 2 adobe seems good if the reds are likely to blow or if it's the middle of the day and it's all too vivid. I have set the sharpness to max - against my better judgement - it just seemed a touch soft in the middle - I may mess some more with that
and the contrast - I either have at middle or minus one depending on conditions
Hope that helps a bit
Geoff

Visited the Hogle Zoo last weekend. The green house and former butterfly habitat has been converted into a visiting white alligator habitat. All the butterflies are gone, but the flowers and plants didn't change. The light was just perfect in the green house.

I was using my new Canon EF 100mm macro lens on my three year old Canon 20D.

I'm not sure what these red flowers are. Anyone know?

Geof, great shot of the bee.

Yesterday, I also took a such a shot of the bee. Basically it was a lucky shot. The bee was flying high above me so I just pointed the camera at it without even looking through the viewfinder. I was really surprised that the bee was even in focus. I could have stopped the lens down a bit more (it was at f/5, 1/3200s) but all in all, I was quite happy with how the shot turned out:

Thanks Geoff,
I used the 17-70 for this one. I also love that lens.

However, the 70-300 is not all that great. The image quality is acceptable to me and the macro mode is also nice, but the focussing is so slow. I think the Nikon 70-300VR would be a much better lens.

Drama, nice shot. Beautiful colours and the depth of field is great.

C&C please!

love the yellow and the composition is fantastic. i think the orange is a little oversaturated though ??

AdamW
07-02-2007, 08:07 AM
Thanks, Rooz. I didn't "see" the composition until I looked through the viewfinder. Then it jumped out at me. I wasn't able to get the right angle or distance to get enough DOF so that the orange petal was as in focus as the yellow. I didn't add any saturation, and the yellow is dead on, so I think the orange looks pretty close to real life. Perhaps because it's out of focus?

I tried a different version. Re-converted the RAW with different settings and de-saturated the orange. Better?

Rooz
07-02-2007, 07:02 PM
hmm...no i like the original better, the new version lost some of it's "pop"...worth a try though. i agree with you here, if you used a greater dof to get more detail in the orange you would have lost the effect. the main part of this photo imo is the 2 petals (??) wrapping around eachother in perfect form and symmetry. the more i look at it the more i really like it.

AdamW
07-02-2007, 07:40 PM
Rooz--

I agree with your assessment. If this was set up in a studio, then I could have used a tripod and a smaller aperture, but it was on the plant in full sun up against a fence. Thanks for the C&C, it really helps to not try to figure out this stuff in isolation (and my daughter's losing her patience with my "Which of these do like better? What do mean you can't tell the difference?!")

Thanks, Rooz. That's a lily. I like the way the pollen is so sharply in focus. I need to get a flash, cause I need more light in order to get more DOF, as ou can se in the other two. Those were in the shade, while the lily was in full sun.

Geoff--that is a great shot of an amazing flower!

Viky--thanks! The lily shot was just the 100mm macro. It might look like more because the lily is a large-ish flower. It was one of those times when everything went just right. Done in RAW with a 20% boost in saturation (the RAWs are always a bit dull) and a little sharpening. That was it!

This started as a test of getting my focus point right on the very tip of the petal of this and setting it up against thebackgroundcolour i wanted using very shallow f2.8 and kenko tubes on my 70-200VR, (not as easy as it may appear !!).

i ended up really liking the colours and DOF of the shot. Don't really know why i like it actually, its pretty plain but it does make me smile and i guess thats something. :)

Holy Christ!

These are some amazing shots... i think one of the best macros i've seen from you!

I's seeing exposure times of 1/sec, 2.2sec and 4secs, and all this while i had thought that it was almost impossible to get such long exposures in macro shots even with a solid tripod, coz due to the high magnification, even the slightest breeze in the open would cause visible subject blur:confused:

P.S. I just can't stop admiring that rose...

Nice one, Bynx. But with a close-up lens your DOF will be reduced.

Bynx
07-21-2007, 09:48 PM
With a #3 lens it says infinity to 13 inches. So if I can get closer with the lens then I dont have to zoom in as much to get the same coverage. With less zoom doesnt the depth of field increase? In other words if I didnt use the close up lens I would have to move back, zoom in closer and have no depth of field at all. If Im wrong please clear this up please.

AdamW
07-21-2007, 10:25 PM
Yeah, but the closer you are to the subject the less DOF you have.

@Bynx: you're indeed right about the colors being a bit dull. Things look a lot more vivid on the edited picture, though the flowers stand out a bit less because the leaves are brighter too.

How about this ?

Thanks, April! I really like the color and saturation the XTi gives. I shoot in RAW and only occasionally have to increase the saturation or vibrance in Photoshop ACR. (Some times I have to tone it down a bit, especialy with skin tones.)

What RAW converter do you use? I'm quite jealous of your colors :D Those are such beautiful pictures.

What RAW converter do you use?

I use Adobe Camera RAW, which is part of Photoshop CS3. You can get similar results with your D50, Tori. I love that shot of the trees you posted over in the landscapes forum. The original has very vivid and saturated colors. One thing I've noticed is that if you bump up the saturation, it works best in multiple small increments. Otherwise the noise gets much stronger too. (Although a light application of Neat Image works absolute wonders!)

Thanks, Mika! I like your shots, especially the spider in the last one. I think the could all benefit from a bit of lightening and boosted contrast (which you could do quickly in Curves.)

Bynx, thanks you are too kind. IMO i just delete these shots because none of them works for my eye. i have raw original and surely this is different but i did not like that dull reality and so tried to play a bit. i hoped #1 could look a bit more like fantasy image which does not have to be realistic, the other two look just dull to my eye. at the end i must start using PS instead of Canons basic soft as it seems.

I deleted these shots from here, no reason to keep them.

Beniman, you're new to the DSLR world? Obviously you're not new to photography in general! Great shots, welcome to DCRP.

Thanks, Tori. I agree that #3 isn't as good. I've found that, as with my writing, if I leave the picture alone for a couple few days and come back to it, I can see it with more clarity and decisiveness. After taking them and processing them, they all start to look alike. Seems like my brain needs a cleansed palate, so to speak.

Brian, I rally like that "Early Chrismas" shot. The exposure, DOF, bokeh--everything just works. By the way, what is it?

Thanks bro. I wasn't too sure anyone thought anything of it with the lack of comments it received. Yeah I'm real happy with the exposure(due to the spot metering)but the DOF I wasn't totally happy with. I think it's a tad too shallow but whatever. I'm not entirely sure what it is. I think it's a type of wheat or something. They're real real tall with a thin stem and what I took a photo of is at the top. The top piece is about an inch to an inch and a half. It's all over the place here. In a way it's kind of like this but smaller and not as grown - http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs16/f/2007/161/a/e/I_Made_It_by_AlwaysThinkingPhoto.jpg

Hahaha, smells like ass. How old is your daughter? That's some funny shit. It totally looks like something that would smell like straight ass. For some reason the first one looks a little hot with the contrast and saturation. Maybe it's just me. The second one is totally perfect. The exposure and depth-of-field is spot on and I like the centered square cropping. With the third one , the depth-of-field is bit off. The tip of the flower is a bit out of focus. With all that being said my favorite is #2. Great job! :)
