scatamousche ~
That's a dazzling looking plant - well taken, nice one
- I'd like to know what it is as well
Hi Geoff,
I guess one of the great things about these nature threads is that, not only do you get some constructive criticism around here, you also get IDs on the ones you don't know.
Here are a couple of flowering maples that I took with my XTI & 60mm macro lens. If memory serves, one was taken with the ring flash and one was taken with natural light.

Scatamousche ~ lovely flowering maple shots - beautiful colours
both shots great in their own right.
This is simply a daisy on my lawn - on a cloudy overcast day!
trying out the 70 - 300 Sigma
Truly a macro experiment as this is a small common daisy.
Didn't see the bug till after - just croped the left and right edges off
and shrunk the size to fit here...

By way of contrast - another daisy on the lawn on a sunny day - same idea I suppose - exept different lens 17 - 70 Sigma
So totally different conditions but the same sort of pic

Thanks, Geoff. A separate flash is really worth it in my opinion. It's like night and day when compared to the onboard flash. Especially when bounced, result look so much more natural.

Change of lens - Sigma 70 - 300,
Just on the edge of the macro range.
@195mm (292mm equiv.)
F5.6, 400th sec, ISO 640
Like the new camera ~ the Sigma 70 - 300 takes a bit of time to get used to,
but seems to respond well once you get to know it's idiosyncrasies!!

There have been great posts here lately. I particularly like Geoff's cherry blossoms(?) and Drama's yam flower which has an alien-like quality. I have a cactus shot somewhere that also makes me think of that movie. If I find it I will post it here. In the meantime here's a foxglove that I bought for my wife at a gardening festival.

PS My wife told me that my red flower that was posted a page or two ago is called a powder puff plant. Sorry, I don't know the scientific name for it.

Nothing wrong with a 350D AT ALL!! Very good photographing machine ~ coupled, of course, with a good photographer!
The Sigmas should work equally well with the 350D - very slightly different equiv focal range: -
27.2 ~ 112 vs: my 25.5 ~ 105
&
112 ~ 480 vs: 105 ~ 450
I have found with the 70 - 300 especially - that it's helped by holding the end of the lens - and where the shutter speed is slower - I slightly press it back towards me and hold it steady that way
I am happy with these lenses - even if they are noisier and slower than Ultra-sonic lenses. Also - I am finding manual focus quite good - I am not sure how easy that would be on the 350D. The 350D is a favourite of mine in terms of the results I have seen

I am not sure how much your Zoom browser will be able to do, have a look for image size or similar. Alternatively I would imagine that Adobe - even in it's simple form - should have something. Otherwise I think there are some download programs - maybe someone else can jump in here....?

Thanks Drama. I did not use the flash for this shot, the flower was outdoors, well lit by sunlight.
It would not have been possible to take this shot with flash, either, because the lens would have blocked the light from the flash.

Thanks Geoff, I was pleased with it too and am beginning to not regret buying an end of line camera. I think I'll be hanging on to the FZ20 it seems to be pretty worthless now second hand & I just can't bare to part with it. The TZ1 is pretty much auto everything so I can't take much credit for that exposure I'm afraid. The blossom was a bit too high on the tree so I had to take the shot overhead on tiptoes so I was quite lucky with the composition too.

Hmm. The detail in the one I called "underexposed" (below) is so much better that I actually prefer it ... maybe this was a no-win situation? Maybe, could you bring up the exposure of the dark one in PP and keep the detail?

This is a case for re-working with curves I think.
The darker renders a bit more edges details and textures - but it is too dark!
Carefully playing in curves could retain shadow detail but allow a brighter overall appearance -
can't show you right now as I am at work with no graphic package.

If you get a chance (and if it's ok with Drama  ) it would be great to see how you would play with curves. In detail. What the actual numbers were, what sections of the curve you moved. Curves has always been beyond me ...

OK - you need to have a play with curves - watch to see the effects and learn from them. Basically the diagonal line represents the whole light range - so top right is highlights and bottom left is shadow - up is brighter and down is darker. I had a very quick play with the red flower using the following 2 adjustments:
Geoff Chandler
04-16-2007, 02:04 PM
On my Serif Photo plus graphics program I can put as many spots to adjust as I like - take care and remember 'less is more' you can ruin a reasonable picture as easily as you can enhance it. Always save using a new filename so you can go back - delete the unwanted versions once you are perfectly happy.
Here's my very quick tweak using those settings - taken from the orig posted red flower plus a little USM at the end.
Good luck - and have fun!

Rooz - difficult to say - DOF is harder with DSLR - wider angle helps and smaller apperture - but you are already getting low on light and would have to bump up the ISO to help.
I would suggest a bit of a different angle. Sometimes it is time to use flash - which I dislike mostly - which will give to more light available and therefor opportunity to stop dowmn a bit more
tricky!

Thanks for that. I guess it is a DOF issue - the flower was in focus and the rest out of focus - if I had softend the shot I would stand to loose details in the petals. I was paying all my attention to those petals trying to get them looking just how they look. I wider shot - or from further away - then cropped - would possibly reduce that vivid 'on top' effect, alternativly - I could spend ages in Photoshop softening the edges only - or - better still - just learn from it and enjoy it as it is.
Thanks again
Geoff

Thanks - those little bits in the centre were barely 1mm wide (the pollen bits) and on the 70 - 300 the DOF was barelt wider than one of those - also I was rocking back and forth as much as that so it was too difficult, whereas it was more manageable on the 17 - 70

The weather has been terrible here lately so I was pretty excited to see the first signs of life yesterday. Snow last week and flowers this week. I guess things are headed in the right direction at least...
I found these interesting: Don't know what they are, just some plant we have out back. I thought they looked like Chili peppers in the center. The flowers are about 1-cm wide.

Hi, wish I had more time to look at all the great photos here, I guess I will eventually, a little at a time.
Rooz, I was wondering what you meant by "stronger" depth of field. Like bigger DOF, or smaller? Maybe smaller would mean more detail? Also, with my macro shots, the DOF is very small, Iīm guessing thatīs the nature of glass - when there is very strong magnification, the DOF is tiny? I know I can increase it some with the aperture, but not so much?

By stronger, I assume he means larger DOF, which my flower shot does need. Wind forced me to use a faster shutter speed.
It's not your Macro lens. It's the distance to your subject. There's a DOF calculator around here some place. DOF is determined by aperture, focal length, and distance to subject. Bigger aperture, smaller DOF. Longer FL, smaller DOF. Closer to subject, smaller DOF.

Ok, thanks, I guess I got it. That means if I want to get right up in a flyīs face, then 2/3 of his body will be out of focus. If I want to get his whole body in focus, all I have to do is back off a little - but Iīll get less detail.
Formulas will just float around in my head and get lost, Iīll practice so I know what does what :D .

Hi Kombizz,
I looked at some of your work at that UseFilm site, seems you like abstract stuff, and people. I loved "Ignorant Person". I live in Lima, Peru, I could get about 500 pictures a DAY on that subject :D . Other great stuff at your site, also.
If you are still in Iran, or you go there regulary, I guess you have access to things that most other people donīt. Kinda like here in South America. There is severe poverty here in Lima, and there is nature that most people havenīt even SEEN out in the rainforests. Getting ready to move out to the Sierra rainforest, Iīm sure Iīll be outside just about every day to see what amazing stuff I can see there. I went out yesterday to see what kind of "People" shots I could get, but I donīt seem to have the eye that you and some other people do for that subject. Maybe I can learn, but most of my yesterdayīs photos were gargage  . I did learn one thing, though, when taking photos on a sunny day - of something or somebody in the shade, gotta use flash - or something.
Also, for anybody who knows about this, what is the rule about a person being "recognizeable" in a photo? If I take a picture of people in the street, and I can see their faces, do I need their permission to do anything with that photo?
Thanks everybody, for sharing your work and your experience.

jane, a great macro lens like the tamron 90mm, sigma 105mm or the nikkor/ canon 60mm's will give you excellent results in colour and contrast with minimal to zero PP at all. it's greatest limitation is the user. ;)
with macros i do use some standard PP to adjust my levels every so often when i haven;t got the lighting right. i don;t need to ever use any sharpening though. these things are tack sharp if you get the focus and DOF right.
no one should be ashamed of PP, it's an art form in itself. :)

I already own a hotch-potch of different graphic programs, each with it's own good points, do you think it worth my while loading up the Nikon 'Picture project 1.7 that came with my camera?? & If so what is it good for??
Currently - I use Dimage Viewer (came with the A-200) for quick fixes ~ I like this as it doesn't loose the exif files. Serif Photo Plus 8 is my current serious Photo processing. Arcsoft Photo impressions 4 - basically if there is any red eye to fix!! I also have Paint shop 4 which I don't bother with.
Believe it or not - I prefer, wherever possible, to leave my photos untampered with -Oh, & I don't do RAW

no nikon PP is not worth it. i used it fleetingly a couple of times and similar to any other packaged software it's pretty basic stuff. PicP does have exif data embeded and i think dlighting aswell which is great for bringing out shadows but maintaining highlights.

Did you set the whitebalance correctly? I am not a fan of automatic WB.
Some flowers are impossible to photograph correctly (colour wise).
I have only experienced that myself, never read theories about it. Both with a Canon CMOS sensor (350D) and a Sony CCD (Canon S30).
The flowers are blue or purple... and the results are different from what you get with film or what you see with your eyes. My theory is that it has to do with ultravialot signatures of the flowers (for bees, they see flowers very different than we do). And the camera interprets the UV frequencies differently, making the colours different (mostly more white/light with blue-ish flowers, and more pink with purple flowers).
When there is sun again, I will try to see what a UV filter will do (UV filters do not block the whole UV spectrum, so I do not know if there will be any effect). Very nice photo, btw.
thanks coldy. :)
yeah the WB is right, its set to "cloudy" and the day was totally overcast. i shot originally in raw and then changed the wb to "shade" but it was even worse. then i just flicked it over to auto and all other settings and none of them were any better. i tried levels, colour modes, saturation, everything. none of them fixed it so i just left as is. interesting thing is that i took one of the same flower not long ago and it is a bright strong violet and it turned out fine/ these flowers go from purple to white, this photo is when they are kinda halfway in between that colour transition, i wonder if that has anything to do with it.
interesting theory about UV...sounds plausible. especially considering these little bastards have bees swarming all over em normally. someone else said on this thread a while ago purples were hard to nail on DSLR...there ya go, now i understand where he was going with it.

Hard to tell, from this camera position. But they are quite big, compared to those little blue flowers. both are bulbs... from the shape of the flower, the center, and the amount of petals I think this probably is a small kind of tulip.
There are so many varieties I can not tell you which variety it is.

Posted a wider shot of these in the Nikon Photo of the Day thread,
they are our 'Butterfly Lavender' and I really like them.
Used the evening light with a slight fill in flash
This is how they look (on a correctly adjusted screen) ~
& I just love the colour of them!

Amazing shot, Rooz.
Have you tried the tubes with your tamron yet? That should allow for magnifications beyond 1:1

That is CLOSE looking forward to seeing some more closups from you using the extension tubes!
Drama - whilst I don't especially go for the B&W effect with the flower - the droplets look amazing in B&W - so it still gets my thumbs up :)

It is all D80 related. Matrix metering has it's own peculiarities, namely it seems to be biased towards the focal point, can seem to need a bit of under exposure. WB even on this overcast day - still more accurate in Sunshine WB and +steps of blue for wrong red saturation compensation. And - more under exposure than I would normally expect - again particuarly with the close up of reds

Over the next couple of days I would like to share with you some excellent flower close-ups from digital cameras that will surprise you. Our first photo is of a Bird of Paradise flower taken in San Pedro, Ca with a Pentax S5i. It will surprise you.

One of my favorite flowers since moving down here to the Miami area.

-1 ev, daylight WB +1 blue did it -
* should have been +2 blue as I 'micro tweaked' the blue after - and that was on an overcast day!!!
(*I am going to pop the various colour temps on a spreadsheet in a way I can clearly see how they pan out)

Drama, re experimental shot: -
1st shot is very interesting - could even try it in B&W?
The 2nd shot qualifies for both Flower or insect or macro
whichever way - it's very good indeed!

i think you could maybe crop it a little at the top and increase the saturation but it's a great shot D.

Thanks Rooz - it's not all that fancy - but we like to have quite a bit of colour and
foliage - also we don't want to keep it all highly pristeen - but more natural, and
a little on the wild side maybe (like me!!!:D)

The red of those velvetty dark red roses is practically impossible to nail with a digital camera Geoff.
I have tried many times!
I took this one early in the morning.

Got to say I like the morning and late afternoon lighting!!
That is such a lovely shot - the colours are great!.
My rose is the closest yet and appart from the slight pink tinge on the petals
(sure I could play around with it - but this was basically straight off the camera)
I am totally happy with it - think I have a handle on the red in camera settings now (as best as I can expect)

Lovely 'oranges' again Rooz.
Looks to me like Sigma macros work well - I am certainly very impressed with the macro on the 17 - 70

Tried pushing my little TZ1 a bit in macro & got this. Not the quality of your dslr shots Geoff & Rooz but I was quite pleased with the result. straight from camera with just a bit of cropping. I think it is a small geranium as the flower was about 30mm across in total.
