My mom wants to get a basic, simple camera. There are alot of sales going on here. Note all prices in CDN $

BenQ (no model) 3MP - $60
Olympus D575 3.2 - $160
Nikon Coolpix 5200 - $299

I know the Nikon 5.1 is very cheap for $300, wow. I know she dont need 5. MP but still that is very cheap!

Newbie, I'm also Canadian - where did you see the Coolpix 5200 for $299?

Very cool. I don't even see the 5100 listed on this site. It looks like a great camera though - 5 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, uses AAs but comes with NiMH rechargeables, AF-illuminator, SD-compatible, 2-year warranty... hmmm, I think I might snap this one up myself...

Anyone know anything about the 5100?

Yikes - BestBuy says sold out!

Lol. Sounds like a typical South Wales sales tactic. Advertise something at a ridiculously low price, never have it in stock and sell the customer something more expensive instead. Classic bait and switch.

Actually I checked again and it's in stock at most of the stores. The website was temporarily out of stock.

Also, the camera store I like to buy cameras from has it for only $10 more. I'm seriously considering it because it's about $130 cheaper than the Canon A95. Anyone have any reason to spend the extra $130 on the Canon as opposed to the Nikon? They both have 5mpx, 3x optical zoom, AF-illuminators, a lot of the same features... the A95 has a swivel screen and more manual controls (I don't care about manual controls - does your Mom need them Newbie or is she happier with simple?) but the 5100 uses only 2 batteries and comes with a 2-year warranty.

The question mark is performance and image quality. Can anyone make a compelling argument for the A95 over the 5100? Otherwise, for the price, the 5100 sounds far and away like the better deal.

Not having seen the camera, does it look a bit like the Nikon 3100/2100/3200/2200? If so then most likely it's a clone of one of those but with more megapixels. I have the 3100 and find it's quite decent although it over-exposes by about 1/3rd of a stop.

The Nikon 5100 info can be found here:
http://www.nikon.ca/products/coolpix5100/

From what I can tell it's an update on the 4100.

I saw the Nikon, dont like the look of any coolpix. It just seems too chubby and ugly on the back.

Canon SD300 is what I want - size wise!
