Hi folks. I've been a happly user of 35mm camers for quite some time, but now I'd like to switch to the digital format, so I'm looking for some help/advice on choosing a suitable camera.
What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Up to £200 (about $350).
What size camera are you looking for? Standard Digital Compact (small enough to fit in a coat/shirt pocket).
How many megapixels will suffice for you? Don't really mind.
What optical zoom will you need? Standard.
How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)Fairly important (7-8).
Do you care for manual controls? Not really. If they're present then that's a bonus.
What will you generally use the camera for? Mostly family shots (indoor and outdoor). Will also want to capture short video clips.
Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? No, most 6x4 or 7x5 shots. May occasionally want something larger.
Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? No. The majority of indoor shots will like be in good light.
Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? Do active children count? :)
Are there particular brands you like or hate? Not really.
Are there particular models you already have in mind? Have been considering the Nikon 4200/5200. Like the Canon A85/A95 but the frame rate on video mode is poor.
Do you need any of the following special features? No.
I'm basically after something pocketable that will let me take decent snaps of friends and family, but also allow me to capture occasional video clips (mostly of my kids - ideal for embarassment when their grown up! ;) ).
I've considered the Nikons, but are there any others that I should be looking at (with young children I don't have a lot of free time to surf the net exhaustively for reviews). Any help/suggestions that're offered will be gratefully received.
