I'm very much an old school SLR amateur, love shooting film, love playing with dials... not that good, but whatever. I'm looking to buy a digital point and shoot for family pics. I am most concerened about image quality. I've been looking at ~5MP, b/c that gives me some cropping room and an ability to print 8x10s. Here's some more

Budget: <$500, better if it were <$400

Size: Slip in a pocket or backpack. The point is to have it around. It's for those days I don't want to take the camera bag. Could be as small as the Sony T-1, as big as the Canon S series.

Features: Surprisingly, I don't care so much. All the cameras I'm looking at have enough features for me.

How many megapixels will suffice for you: 5

What optical zoom will you need? Standard = 3x-4x

How important is “image quality” to you? 10, this is where I want it to be really good. Image quality, for me, includes really good color, saturation, crispness, in short, everything you want in a photographer's point&shoot.

Do you care for manual controls? At least some.

General Usage: Family, portraits, night scenes... the works. No super long telephoto... that's when I'll bring the SLR.

I've looked at the Canon S60, and the Sony T-1. I like them both. The S60 is nice, in that there is a lot to play with, the pictures are clear, the RAW shooting mode is cool. The T-1 is so small! I'm totally open to other suggestions.

Here are a couple of digital cameras that you might want to consider. These are arranged from the highest to the lowest price. The Canon SD-500, the Olympus C-7000, olympus C-5500, Fuji F-10, Fuji E-550.

Iv'e also been looking for a P&S. The Fuji E550 fit the requirements but most people seem to favor the Sony W-5 when comparing the two. Any more thoughts between these two? Others to consider are the Pana Lz2 but no viewfinder, Ricoh RIV-havent heard to much about, Nikon 7600, and Pentax S50( all of these take aa's)
