s1 Is flash setting question

I have my new S1 IS and have aquestion regarding the auto flash.
Is there a specific setting for backlit image flash compenstion (fill-in flash) or does the camera auto compensate ??

I have found no referance to this as yet and the several experiments with back lit subjects produced no fill-in flash and were overexposed in the background.

What have I missed / not understood ??

AFAIK the auto flash just monitors the exposure based on your metering setting and adjusts accordingly.

I would set the flash to Always On for fill-in flash. To stop the shot from being washed out, I'd bump the exposure compensation down a notch or two.
