hello everyone. this is my first time posting here but i've been reading posts for a while. please forgive me if i mess this up.

i'm finally ready to buy my first digital camera. but i don't know what's best to get. the reviews on this site are awesome but a lot of them seem geared towards professional users, and i'm having a hard time figuring out what my best bet would be.

i'm looking for a camera that's:

-small enough to fit in my purse and to travel lightweight - but not too teeny cause i hate the ones that you can't hold steady.

-has enough megapixels that i can crop and still make a nice 5x7 print of a quality that will rival film.

-takes great photos on an "auto" setting - i don't want a camera with a bunch of manual controls i have to fiddle with, i just want to be able to snap and get nice photos. maybe not professional-quality nice, but nice enough to show my friends and family.

-works great both indoors and out, i take lots of indoor pictures, like at restaurants and stuff, and it's gotta work well for that.

-takes pictures quickly - none of that long delay between pressing the button and snapping the photo please.

-uses AA batteries or at least has the option on a pinch - this is important cause i love to travel and it's hard to charge batteries sometimes in hostels or campsites.

-i'd prefer a decent zoom, not necessarily super-long but my film camera has the equivalent of about a 4x and i'd hate to downgrade.

-costs less than $400 or so, including the memory card and battery. (i'd prefer one that uses SD cards cause they seem to be the most readily available - am i wrong?).

i know this question has been asked a zillion times before, but it seems the more reviews i read, the more confused i get. can someone help me?

thanks!

I would recomend the Canon A520. It has 4 MP, uses 2 AA batteries, sort of small, has 4x zoom lens, and uses SD media cards.

I'm also looking seriously at the Canon Powershot A520. Angie, I've listed some pros and cons that I think I've identified in the thread above entitled "Canon A520 or Nikon 4800?". This is just based on the research I've done till now; I'm hoping someone who owns or has owned these cameras can clarify. But from what you've said you're looking for, it sounds like it would fit your criteria.
