Has anyone used a generic compatible cartridge in an Epson? I am seeing them listed as low as $4.

Using third party inks can be problematic. They probably void any warranty on the printer. There have been problems with clogging with third party inks. This is a serious problem on Epsons as the nozzles are attached to the printer and not the cartridge. This makes repairs difficult and expensive. That is the generic answer. Perhaps, you should ask for people's experience with specific brands.

I would be interested in where to get $4.00 ink refills. Since I am trashing my Epson 820 due to constant need to clean the black nozzel, it wouldn't hurt to try the refills and if it didn't work, wouldn't have lost much.
Where did you find the $4.00 refills? If they work, then I could give the thing away and someone could use it. As of now, it isn't worth giving away!

Janet,
I just did a search on Froogle and typed in "epson t027". Lots of stuff popped up there. I did find one way to not get a clogged nozzle....I just did a print job that used the whole cartridge :) Of course, that doesn't happen often. I just hate to give up on the printer because the output (when it works) is so good.

I have hardly ever used Epson inks. I mostly buy generic inks and also refill all my cartridges as much as possible. I've been using the same printer for 7 years so generic inks do work.

As far as fading is concerned - I keep my printed photos in the dark because all photos and ink fade. I use my b/w printouts for whatever they're needed for and fading isn't really an issue.

Well, I finally found the site where I have been buying my name brand paper and ink as suggested on this site. And that is
http://www.atlex.com

However, I have found a site for generic paper and ink and wonder if any of you have tried them. For ink, I forgot who suggested it but they bragged about how good it was--
http://www.inkgrabber.com
And for paper, suggested by Steve's digicams
http://www.freephotopaper.com

Altex I can vouch for providing they are still standing after the Hurricane Frances, but I have never used generic ink and paper. I am getting the Canon i9900 and need paper recommendations. I may go with generic ink for my old printer but unless I get really positve feedback on generic for the Canon I will stay with name brand.

For paper recommendations: You should stay with Canon papers in general, but there are some really high-end papers out there from companies like Red River and etc. I use an Epson 870 and 2000P and find that Epson papers work the best in general, and I have talked to Canon 9100and 9900 owners that say the same about Canon papers.

To all of those using 3rd party inks...

...If you want the prints to last, in open light, then don't use 3rd party inks. If, like Rhys, you keep your prints in the dark until you want to show them, then you might be ok.

If you are printing 4 x 6 then go to Cosco (and other kiosks). For 19-29 cents a print you will have wet process prints that will last as long as film prints. That's cheaper than printing them yourself.

I have a different opinion about brandname ink, which is said to be the most expensive liquid in the world. I have a canon i9900 photo printer, I have been using generic ink/paper. They worked just great. I purchased ink from http://www.all-ink.com before, which worked great. However, the price is still high comparing with another store I recently discovered, i.e. http://www.top-ink.com , I love the 10-pack offer with FREE paper, and I received a 10% off coupon (save10) that is valid for multiple use for 2005! Why pay $10 when you get get it for $4, with the same quality?

Steve, My wife and I take digital photos and, when we get something worthwhile, we enter 8X10 prints in local contests, county fairs etc. We have used HP printers bought ar Sam's Club and are currently using an HP7350. In 12 months, in preparation for our HIllsdale County Fair, we used over $700 for factory ink cartridges. We would like to purchase factory ink in pints or quarts or even 4 oz bottles. We would also like to find a continuous ink supply system to feed the printer we would buy...canon or Epson. Most people tell us that the Canon prints are more colorful than the Epson chroma ink prints. I hope we might buy a great 13x19" printer with a constant ink supply setup that will produce prints as good as with factory cartridges. Bill

I've had success with compatible and even with remanfactured ink that I bought online at http://www.castleink.com

Seemed to work just as good as the original, even for printing pics....

I'm a firm believer in new compatible cartridges for Epson and Canon printers. They are much lower cost than name brand OEM cartridges, and from my experience, once you install them and click "ok" on the initial warning message, I won't be able to tell any difference.

Now I did have some issues in the past with a different brand of compatible cartridge than I'm currently using now. I would get periodic problems with the colors being off shade.

After that, I tried ordering from a new place. Before ordering, I talked with a person there about my hesitation. He had told me he knew the issue I was referring to, and that I should realize that there are dozens of different companies out there offering compatible cartridges. Lumping them all in the same category doesn't do them justice, because some are high quality, while some are crappy.

He explained to me that their company only offers the best they can find because they don't want to have problems. He said that it costs more in the long run to offer the cheaper crappy products and then have to deal with higher returns. This made sense to me.

He also said that they tracked and evaluated the returns that they did have. He said that if a supplier wasn't pulling their weight, they'd switch to one that was. He followed it up with the comment that they don't seem to switch as frequently anymore because over time, they've found some very dependable sources.

I normally don't give too many website recommendations, (not too many inspire me to do so) but I think this company is just top-notch all the way around. I really appreciated the time spent explaining this all to me just to earn my business. (Plus the guy had the same last name as me :) ) Their name is ASAP Inkjets and they're at http://www.asapinkjets.com/

They've got quality products and I couldn't be happier with how personable their service is. They ship very quickly too.

And they like to spam websites as well!

As a matter of fact, I've never seen so many spam responses in one thread before!

Its hard to find cheap Epson printer ink, I usually get mine from http://www.PrinterInkPrices.com, it would also be a good thing to list your exact printer model, its easier to find it that way.

That sound real cheap fot a cartridges. Printers seem to be so much cheaper these days but the price of ink does not go down. Check around before you buy.
Thanks
