The answer to your question depends on the file format settings chosen on the camera. For instance, you'll be able to store far fewer images on your card if you choose TIFF mode than if you choose a highly compressed JPEG. Your manual will have a chart of the approximate number of files per card for each of the camera's settings.

You could check out here: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dsc_p150-review/index.shtml
It may not be perfect, but a 32 meg card is listed there. Just multiple the numbers by 8. Should give you a rough idea about the different settings, storage, etc. on a 7.2mp camera.

I dont know if its the same with Sony, but on my Canon SD500 which is 7.1 mp, I can get approx 300 on a 1 gb card, 150 on a 512 mb card, and roughly 75 on a 256 mb card. Those are obviously on the highest resolution and picture quality. If I want just 4x6 pictures, my 512 mb card will hold a little over 1000 and my 1 gb card around 2100. Anyway...thats a Canon..not sure if Sony is the same or not.

Using a 256 MB card the image count can be as few as 9 to as many as 1428. It all depends on the camera settings. For all practical purposes the settings used by most folks normally, will yield about 67 very high quality photos.
The 1428 figure pertains to low resolution photos used in emails. The figure of 9 pertains to high resolution photos which are not compressed. These are known as TIFF and RAW which are formats used mostly by professional or very serious amateur photographers.
The figures given in this posting are those stated in the owner's manual for the Sony DSC-V3 which is a 7 Megapixel digital camera.
