I did some color correction and minor perspective correction post-processing. Unfortunately, the lighthouse must have a small lean to it, making it look like it's leaning to the left, despite the horizon being level.

Comments and criticism welcome.

Goerge! Where are you?! I made a special stop to shoot this...

"Old Barney" was built in 1858 to replace the previous lighthouse that had toppled into the sea (so who did they find willing to work here, I wonder? :D ). It was lit on January 1st, 1859 and was retired in 1927. It stands 165-ft. tall and is now part of Barneget Lighthouse State Park on Long Beach Island, NJ.

Too bad it was closed for renevation! :(

As we have come to expect... a very nice shot, and thanks for the PM. Sorry I was working on some 11 x 17 prints, over the weekend, for a sales conference/show this week, so I missed a bunch of new photo postings (including my favorite here). And of course my 2000P picked this time to start leaving the black out of the image (fixed, but it took a while).

Also thanks for taking the time to include some history.:)

Built: 1847
Automated: 1955

This light is located at the end of the East Pier of Dun Laoghaire Harbour. It and the West Pier Light were built to guide into the harbour ships that were waiting to get into the Port of Dublin.

Not the greatest photo, but not a lighthouse you get to see that often! Taken from the side of the road...had no time to go down and explore...

This lighthouse is 168-ft. tall and is located on Fire Island, NY and is part of the Fire Island National Seashore park. It was lit for the first time on November 1, 1858. This tower is made of red brick and was originally painted yellow. The tower was changed to the present day-mark of alternating black and white bands in August 1891. The Fire Island Lighthouse was decommissioned as an aid to navigation on December 31, 1973.

Hey George! I'm doin' alright with the lighthouses...any others that I should shoot? Did anybody do Sandy Hook yet? I can get the shot if you want! :D :D :D

Not too bad for a shot with an SD500...

Beautiful lighthouses all. I still drop in on this site (and the Nikon board) from time-to-time to see what's going on. I'm glad to see that lighthouses still attract photographers everywhere.

I'm also taking this opportunity to repost my favorite lighthouse at Point Pinos in Pacific Grove, CA. I served as one of the last Coast Guard lightkeepers before it was automated in the mid-1970's, and I went back to search-and-rescue duty, so it is a lifepoint for me.

Nice shot, great composition. Too often we seem to forget that landscapes need a foreground, a middle and a background.
Personally I'd photoshop the power pole and lines out, but that's minor.

Ya know, it's funny, but I did remove the old power pole but it actually changed the personality of the picture in a negative way, so I left it in.

Probably more my personal preference, but this shot has been pretty popular for 11 x 17 prints as well.

I never thought I'd get to post in this thread. However, we went on a short coastal walk from Dover in Kent & came across this little gem. It is the South Foreland Lighthouse perched on top of the white cliffs & owned by the National Trust. It is a Victorian lighthouse & a climb up the tower gives spectacular views across the English Channel. It was apparently the site of some of Marconi's wireless experiments and Faraday's first electrically-powered light. A very nice lady gave us a guided tour & lots of fascinating info about the place. Well worth the 2 mile walk along the cliff top to get there.

Thanks George I took several shots of the lighthouse but that one was taken by holding the camera at full stretch over a high fence & not being able to see the LCD so I had to guess where I was pointing, came out the best! Just had to straighten the level up a bit in PPing. It's suprising how often that "oh I may as well just take it " shot proves to be worth while. Here is another angle with the sun behind the light. I thought it was a close as I was going to get to seeing the light illuminated as the lighthouse is now out of commission.

That was with my former Canon-film 24mm as I recall. I loved that length, plus the 15mm fisheye, so my eyes lit up at the Pentax 10-17mm :-)

It's a scan of a slide from my old stuff, so I hope it qualifies as "digital" :-)

I've been a-travelling.

This is North Head Lighthouse in Washington State and is very close to the Cape Disapointment Lighthouse which I didn't have time to get to. It's a fabulous view across the Pacific Ocean and to stand and watch the waves smash on to the rocks was quite something.

"After Cape Disapointment Lightstation was established in 1856 to mark the entrance to the Columbia River, mariners approaching the river from the north complained they could not see the light until they had nearly reached the river. Their cry for an additional lighthouse was supported by the many shipwrecks, which occurred along the Long Beach Peninsula, just north of the cape.

Construction of North Head Lighthouse began in 1896. The tower is brick masonry with a cement plaster overlay built on a sandstone foundation. Since the light is only two miles north of Cape Disappointment, North Head needed a distinct signature. North Head shone a fixed white light, while Cape Disappointment alternated red and white flashes.

North Head is one of the windiest places in the United States. On January 29, 1921, winds were clocked at 126 mph before the instrument blew away. They have frequently been measured at over 100 mph." (Text from Lighthousefriends.com)

My girlfriend and I visited that lighthouse last summer. I am from Maine and I have never seen anything like Washington. Here is my pic of the lighthouse.

Space Shuttle--sort of funny consider what is playing at the IMAX theater inside the Luxor. I also just finished adding more inside and outside photos of the Luxor to my website. Of course, it's not quite the same as seeing it in person. I've also attended CES, Comdex, etc. numerous times; however, some of the conventions are not quite like they used to be either.

New Brighton lighthouse, across the river from Liverpool. I don't think it is used anymore.

Taken in January this year on a freezing cold night. Fuji S3 and Sigma 17-70 lens. Exposure was about 4.5 minutes at f8 I think. It looks a bit ghostly because I filtered out the sodium light pollution from across the river which was the only light on the lighthouse. On another version of this I have cloned out the streaks of white light on the right which was a boat going into Liverpool.

I can never get enough of lighthouses, my hard drive are full of them. I'm a hunter of the sometimes elusive beast myself, arg! ;)
My wife calls it the oh oh factor when I try to figure how many lighthouses I can shoot in a days drive. She's good sport and we do not have cast iron skillets in the house. So far I made it 235 miles one way to Rockland Breakwater and Owls Head.
I'd like to add a few of my newbie pics, I welcome your critique.

The lighthouse was built in 1859, under the supervision of First Lieutenant George Meade (who, yes, eventually became General George Meade), who was also responsible for the construction of the Absecom and Barnegat lighthouses. It stands 157.5 feet tall and has 218 steps to the top. The current beacon (updated in 2002) is a DCB-224 beacon that flashes a white flash every 15 seconds and can be seen for 24 miles out to sea. The original beacon featured a first order Fresnel lens, which is now on display at the Cape May County Court House.

Well, George, I finally made it up to Pt. Arena to capture one of the most beautiful lighthouses in America. Mother Nature was kind & gave me a "window of opportunity" between rains to take 70+ shots.
This is the most "Touristy" shot, but I have other less "common" views that I prefer. So, what do you think?
By the way, it's time for you to submit an Arizona lighthouse, now. :D

Point Sur is also very interesting, although I'm not sure they allow people on the "Rock" anymore, but hey, it's on the way to Big Sur so make it part of the trip. Pfeiffer Big Sur Beach is also prety photogenic.

Although I live in the Bay Area, I occasionally volunteer at Point Cabrillo lighthouse, usually as a docent during their Whale Festival in March.

As you probably know the USCG took over the task of assigning lighthouse keepers on an 4 hour watch/maintenance basis until they started automating them in the 1970's. I was there from early 1973 to 1974 when I was reassigned to a search and rescue (SAR) vessel (Cape Wash, 95 foot WPB) out of Monterey (coincidentally, my home town).

I gave occasional tours on weekends and if I still lived there I would definately volunteer to give tours as well... maybe someday again.

Thanks for volunteering, I'm sure that it's a lot of fun.

The Great Lakes have always had their share of sinkings on the shallows of the lakes. The lighthouses that line the shores are a critical element to continued commerce, but GPS has also reduced their importance (thank goodness).

The Gross Point Lighthouse is one of the tallest on the Lakes, at 113 ft tall. Mariners had to be particularly careful when following the shoreline into Chicago’s harbor, as there were shallow water areas (shoals) off Grosse Point responsible for sinking or stranding many vessels.

The illuminating optic at the top of the tower is a second order Fresnel lens, the largest type of optic used on the Great Lakes and one of only five ever installed in lighthouses there. The beam of light from this optic could be seen up to 21 miles over the lake in good atmospheric conditions, and it served both to warn ships of shallow waters around the pointFog signal building in operation ca. 1920 and to guide the way into the Port of Chicago.

Thanks Benjamin.

Lighthouses have always been the symbols of warning, safe haven, and purpose. There is a bit of myth and romance involved as well.

Being a keeper, even part time, I felt the tradition, history, and sense of responsibility that keepers over the centuries have felt. Keeping that beacon clean and in working order, no matter the weather, was a great job... giving tours was the reward.:)

No matter what coastal area in the world lighthouses prevented thousands of seafarers and travelers from a horrible death.

I understand the appeal of tradition: the sense of honour, privilege and service that one feels from being part of an ongoing tradition and the satisfaction of a job well done that one derives in such service is really very special.

Haven't posted any lighthouses for a long time so here's a few shots of the Needles lighthouse on the Isle of Wight in the UK.
Only noticed the slightly submerged rocks here on looking at the shot. Looks pretty dangerous to me hence the need for a light I guess.
48374
Close up of the light & hele pad. I must admit the hele pad does tend to spoil the overall view a bit but if it was me on there I'd be glad of it.
48375
Finally a salvaged shot in PP that I thought was useless because of the high level of haze as we left the island on our way home. For me the suprise here was the pin prick of light that comes through the lighthouse lamp room when the light was not turned on.

George I shot it at 600mm I think off the ferry. It was very hazy so I used Picasa to boost the contrast to reduce the haze. Then there was a lot of cropping to get a reasonable looking composition. It's sometimes suprising what can be got from initially uninteresting looking shots with even just a little work. Thanks for the compliment.

Thanks Adam. Took it wide open at ISO 1600. f/2.8 and clean high ISO would have been nice.

Great job. Light houses are awesome, but I almost never see them. Here's a recent one. Though it's more the background than the subject.

Very cool guys (and gal).

Raven any information on the light behind you?

Unfortunately living here in the desert my lighthouses are few and far between. ;)

Hopefully, the first of the year I'll be back home in San Jose.:D

It's in Qingdao (aka Tsingtao) China and was originally built by the Germans when they occupied the city. The signs officially proclaim how bad and horrible the Germans were for doing that, but on the other hand the city is now known world wide for its beer.

It's OK, surrounded by dense trees that make it hard to get a shot from many angles. But it actually looks pretty good.

Thanks for that info. Bummer, I missed that when I was in Qingdao, but I did attend the beer festival (~3 years ago). Had a drink fest with a pretty crazy Mongol, guy was drinking (and falling) on the picnic tables... I have pics somewhere.

I was meeting with the engineers at Haier at their world headquarters... I have pictures of the play area... also somewhere. I'll try to dig them up.

Well I saw the light house but missed the beer festival, so take your pick ;). Good old drunk Mongols, I've seen a few of them here in Inner Mongolia. Turns out, the beer tastes much better in Qingdao. By the time it gets to the north it's not half as compelling. In any case, the Mongolians and northern Chinese usually prefer "white wine" (fermented skunk cabbage is what I call it) or fermented horse milk (in the summer, Mongolians at least, I haven't tried yet), which is the reason the beer gets stale before anyone drinks it.

Most of my appliances are Haier... there is no appropriate smiley face. They are usually ... ok... depending on one's expectations.

That's a cool little lighthouse. I like the 2nd one the best, with the bridge cutting across the sky.

I guess a HDR might work, but it is brilliant as it is too. Very nice, Lukas. Thanks for sharing.

Is that where the beer is made?

Hey Doug--I'm guessing that's a Civil War era fort? It looks similar to Fort Point, built to defend SF Bay during the Civil War.

This is the lighthouse that started this thread... I was one of the last lighthouse keepers (USCG) here in 1974... A great job for about a year until automation. The houses in the compound are for USCG officers and senoir enlisted personel assigned to USCG station Monterey (at the breakwater/beginning of Cannery Row.

Many is the time that I was cleaning the outer glass, and of course the Fresnel lens inside, where the person in your photo is walking. We would go out and retrieve golf balls from the iceplant occasionally as the PG Golf course runs through the back yard (beyond the fence).

Thanks for posting this!

That is an interesting story. I had not seen the thread-starter before. I was visiting my mom in PG and took her on a little spin of the area (lighthouse, cemetery across the street, John Denver memorial, Thai bistro...) .

A family friend in New Zealand was a relieving Lighthouse keeper in the 1970's. he would spend around a month at a time on stations when the resident keeper and their family was on leave. As kids we spent some great weekends at some incredible locations that in those days were not generally accessible by the public. Shame I didn't have a camera then.

Just to stay on topic here is the light house at Port Fairy in Victoria (Australia).

Just to the Southwest of Melbourn (stll a fair drive). Must be the dead of winter now. I haven't been back to Melbourne since 1968...

The ship I was on did joint operatons (Viet-Nam) with the HMAS Perth D 38, our sister ship (same hull design). Curiously enough, the ship I was on was sold to Australia for parts and scrapped in 1993.

My link to Austrailia... gotta go back one of these years. :D

This is the St. George lighthouse, in St. George Island, FL. The entire thing actually collapsed in '05, and they just rebuilt it 2 years ago. I snapped this pic about 3 or so months ago (just before the oil spill).

Sat on the top of the White Cliffs of Dover ,a Victorian lighthouse though out of commission for a few years now.

Searching this forum I see it did appear once in 2006,but I'll put this in as its taken from a different angle from near the cliff edge late afternoon on a sunny September afternoon .
