10 MegaPixel for $399... Huh?

I found an ad today for a "Bell and Howell" 10MP camera, 2 inch LCD,
3x zoom, for $399. Anybody know if this camera is worth considering.

No. 10MP is interpolated (manipulated in firmware), not actual. The Bell & Howell name was purchased a while back and is now run out of China. Bell & Howell of US fame was know for 16mm movie cameras and projectors in the 50's and 60's. This camera is probably worth about half of the asking price, or less.

That's interpolation all right. 10 MP cameras won't even cost $399 ;) . $3999, maybe. The camera's real image size is probably 5 MP.

Interpolation does the same to your photos as digital zoom - Lower their quality.
Digital zoom - Zooms in by cropping out and expanding a certain area
Interpolation - Expands the whole area but at the cost of image quality

So a picture at 10mp, to the end of the digital zoom, would look like crap!

the 10mp sounds great but there is no zoom when the camera is set on 10... the camera can be set at many different megapixel settings however only 3.1 or lower will have a 8x zoom. its very small and light but you'd be better off getting a nice 5 or 6 mp digital camera for around the same price.
