Budget
* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible.
$300-$400 (preferably lower)
Size
* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?
prefer something compact, but if the other features are all perfect then size won't matter so much
Features
How many megapixels will suffice for you?
4+
* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x)
at least 3x, but i don't need an ultrazoom
* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
8-9 its important, but also speed of the pictures is important
Do you care for manual controls?
they would be nice, so if i wanted to learn what they do then i could, but wouldn't have to have them
General Usage
* What will you generally use the camera for?
taking pics of my daughter, and just general pics
* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?
probably not, but if i get a really good one of her i might blow it up
Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?
most of the pictures will be indoors, not necesarily low light though
Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?
yes, a 6 month old doesn't like to sit still
Miscellaneous
Are there particular brands you like or hate?
i have a minolta dimage f100 right now, and have had an olympus d-510. didn't really love or hate either. so i'm not set on anything or against anything.
Are there particular models you already have in mind?
looking at a kodak dx7440, canon sd300, a520, sony w1???? those are some i've looked at at best buy, but i'm really not sure at all.
(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)
only thing i really need is it to be very fast. my minolta has all the features i would want except that its not fast enough. by the time the picture is done, she's moved her head or stopped smiling.
edit - being able to re-use my sd cards from my minolta would also be a plus, and would mean that i could spend more on the camera, since i'm not buying a card.
