I opened up the case to my F717 not too long ago and found that the LCD was cracked. Mysteriously, no one around the house knows anything about it ... It still works fine, but only 1/3 of the LCD is viewable. Anyway, I want to get it replaced, but Sony and/or an authorized repair center wants $50 just to look at it and won't tell me how much an LCD replacement would be. Does anyone have an idea how much this would cost to replace? I want to get it fixed, but I don't want to bother if it's going to cost me enough $$$ to buy me another camera. I'm just trying to get an idea how much it'd be so I know if I should just bite the bullet and get another camera. Thanks in advance...

I'm sorry to hear about your broken LCD.

The availability and quality of repairs varies considerably. (For example, stay away from Mack at all costs.)

A basic $50 standard charge "just to look at your camera" seems to be pretty standard in the industry. However, I've heard that Sony has a flat-rate repair service of $171. Personally, I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable sending it anywhere else.

The flat rate repair is if the camera is in warranty (it is) and is a covered repair. Sony's warranty specifically says that it doesn't cover repair of any "display devices" meaning that the LCD isn't covered under warranty. :( After seeing that warranty, I'll know better than to buy a Sony product without an extended warranty from a reputable retailer... Anyone else?
