Hi all,

I've been researching (well, some procrastinating too) over a new camera for the past few weeks, and have got it narrowed to these 2. I'd like to feel comfortable spending the tax-refund in a week or so!

I currently have an ol' Canon S100 Elph that has served me well. I want to avoid going much over 550.00 for the camera, leaving about 50.00 more for extras (misc acces, etc). Looking at the major retailers, the G6 comes in at 510-599, and the Nikon 5700 at 525.00 at a recommended online site (after rebate). The Nikon 8700 seems a closer competitor to the G6 and would be a possibility, but it goes about 125-150.00 over my price range.

I'm not a professional photog at all, but like to take pictures of my travels, etc etc, and the extra settings and features of either I know I can learn and experiment without much frustration.

I'm leaning towards the G6, having had excellent reliability with the little Elph, and also on the low-light focus concerns, and having the G6 "maybe" less a power hog (I'd get extra batt anyway), but that 8x optical zoom of the Nikon is compelling. Both take the CF cards I already have, so thats a plus.

Most of my friends are in the 3-4 megapixel ownership range, so I don't have a reliable range of opinions to draw against.

Software wise, it's a non-issue to me, as I use a Mac.

Any major issues or concerns (or alternatives) I should consider or be aware of?

Eddie

I agree. Go with the G6.

I've been looking for some software for the Mac for touching up photos. Photoshop is nice, but is much more complicated than say iPhoto for just the simple touchups. Too bad iPhoto is so slow. And that I don't like connecting the camera straight to the computer.

Note: Maybe Adobe Elements 3.0 would be a better (and more available) choice. Especially since G6 owners can shoot in RAW format. ;)

After reading tons of reviews and feedback, I bought the Canon G6.

I haven't done much with it yet (will this weekend), but basically I figured out the majority of the buttons and setting changes on the fly, partially from previous experience having used a Canon Digi-Elph.

Nice camera. Feels good in my hand. Writes shots quickly on the supplied ultra-fast card (32meg, and decent for a starter card). Now I know what someone means when they say "flimsey card cover"! That must have assigned that to the newbie design engineer in the Canon development department.

Took a few shots last night and am very happy with the quality of images taken indoors under the flash. Glad I followed through with this model.

Thanks all.

Eddie
