I like the picture quality, but not wild about the pricing.
Huh ? I got my xe1 and 35mm for $1200usd. That's bloody cheap for what it is imho
I like the picture quality, but not wild about the pricing.
A D7000 body and 35 f1.4 lens from B&H is around $1300 MORE expensive. What is your issue with price?

Oh, I agree that is a decent price for this based on list, but I still think it is too high an entry point for a mirrorless system with limited lenses.
Wow. Ok. Fair enough. I can see your point but have to say I'm surprised.
Maybe I'm blind in love. lol
Oh, I agree that is a decent price for this based on list, but I still think it is too high an entry point for a mirrorless system with limited lenses.
I guess spending a thousand dollars to have a mirror flapping up and down is worthwhile to some. Fuji are not new players in the game they are one of the most respected high end lens makers around with the Fujinon products winning many awards over the years in the film and medical imaging fields. Check somewhere like Wikipedia and see what the range of their products is you will be staggered to see that you in many ways outclasses the likes of Nikon and Canon.
In less than 12 months Fuji has introduced 4 lenses for the X series cameras and every one has been optically far better than similar offerings from the main players and their road map through to the end of 2013 includes 6 more lenses to give a total of 10 lenses in 2 years. The SLOWEST lens Fuji will be introducing is a 55-200 zoom that will be f3.5-f4.8. Compare that to Nikons rather woeful DX lens performance over the last 8 or 9 years.
It all comes down to how and what you will be using it for I guess. If you are really starting out and buying a system, I guess then lens choice may be a negative. Lack of stabilization, telephoto choices etc and all kids of other things come into play if its your one and only system. I don't see the fuji like that so it's a non issue for me.i can't imagine wanting any more glass unless it's zeiss.

I was not intending to compare the Fuji to other DSLRs, but to other mirrorless systems. Certainly m4/3rds is the leader in lens assortment, Sony is getting there too; both have lower cost of entry bodies for their system families. And I see no point in spending over $1k on a secondary system, so lens selection is an important factor. I have only started to play with m4/3rds since I bought my wife an entry level 2 lens E-PM1 kit. I would not hesitate to say that the Fuji has better image quality, but I do not find the E-PM1 to be total crap. In real world use it did fairly well on our trip to Alaska when I look at similar scenes captured with my E-5. Handling and focus are clearly better than a lot of P&S gear, but still not up to DSLR levels (and the E-5 is certainly not top dog in DSLR's).
Just to clarify.
The Fuji X-E1 is not a m4/3 camera. It has an APS-C sized sensor virtually identical in physical size and pixel count to the sensor in the D7000.
Fuji has been quite open about the fact that the X-Pro1 and X-E1 are the first products in a range. They have started at the top (with the X-Pro1) and worked down a little (with the X-E1) and as their technology and manufacturing costs decrease I'm sure that you will find that a third or maybe even fourth lower spec/lower cost body will be introduced. Image quality wise these units cannot be compared to m4/3 they sit above current APS-C DSLRs and equal to FF DSLRs of only a generation ago in image quality. You shouldn't be fooled into thinking that because of the retro or p&s style of the bodies that is what they are.
Fuji have identified a niche of high end photographers who don't want or need a DSLR and are filling it.
And more importantly, who don't want a nex or canon m cos it doesn't suit the style. I'd argue only Olympus is playing in this area.
It's a totally different perspective they are coming from.
The m4/3 range is very appealing though from a lens perspective if that's what you need.

K1W1,
Not sure where the confusion is coming from here. I never said that The Fuji X series was m4/3rds, only that they are both mirrorless systems. I knew that they were APS-C sensors (although others might not). Also I never said that the image quality was not better, in fact the image quality was the first thing I mentioned. My comments were relative to what I want in a mirrorless system, and it needs to be a system, not the beginnings of a system. And while Fuji has built some nice cameras over the years, even in the film SLR days, I am not convinced that they have a very rich history of successful camera systems. Much like Kodak they have relied on other companies lens families to support their bodies.
there is no place for gear talk in a fuji thread. lol

I assume those are all in camera B&W? It does produce nice ones.
It's all sooc jpegs except for a vignette I applied in lr4. You do lose contrast quite radically if you don't position the lens right in relation to the light source though. Am learning my way around that.

Looks good to me. From what little I've seen, I've really liked the look of color photos from the new Fuji. It has a very full, undigital look. Or something. Colors are saturated, but also smooth and "deep."
Yeah, no doubt the colors are very good and I agree, they do have a certain something to them. I can't quite put my finger on it either. I suspect it's a slightly imperfect analog look that some of us were accustomed to from film while the d800e produces near perfect...flawless files that look HD but perhaps lose some charm in the process. Or maybe, quite likely, I'm just talking out of my a$$. lol

Some GREAT images. Wish I could have talked the wife into an X series Fuji instead of the Nikon P510 she settled on. My first digital was a Fuji, and I've always had a soft spot in my heart (head?) for Fuji cameras, even though they seem to hit and miss in the last few years.

I was really close to convincing my wife to get an X10 a couple of days ago as my birthday present to her but unfortunately I made the mistake of saying she should try it out first, thinking she might just say she wants the X20 for the vue finder info but unfortunately it backfired as she said "oh no I can't have one of them if you can't just press a button to zoom"
