I've just found that my separate flash is potentially damaging the electronics of my FZ20 through high voltages
(from list at http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html) .
So I'll have to revert to using the built in flash for a while until I get a different one.
In the meantime - is anyone managing to get decent portraits using the built in flash? If so, could they share any tips about how to do it! Thanks in advance.

You may not have to get another flash. See this thread:

Wein makes an adapter that will reduce your high voltage down to something that will not damage the camera. I haven't tried this, but many people have and claim that it works.

I thought about buying a Wein so that I could use my **old** Vivitar 2500 flash safely on my FZ20. But then I realized I could buy a young (less than 1 year old) used Vivitar 285HV on eBay for $18. So I did that instead.
