Hi. I am new here and new to digital cameras. (hence the s/n)

I just bought this camera and was frustrated to learn that I need "sony memory sticks", instead of the cheaper SanDisk. (or do I have this all wrong?)

I want a 512MB memory stick. I just looked up the price at Staples and was a little disappointed.

Maybe it's me, but when I bought the camera, I assumed it used the cheaper SanDisk memory...(I guess I should've done more research?)...now I'm stuck ordering expensive memory, when I could've bought twice the amount of generic memory for the same price.

Did Sony screw me, or are there other alternatives that I don't know about?

Can I get memory sticks higher than 512 for this camera?

Please help.

Thanks so much!

You shouldn't have a problem using sandisk memory sticks with this camera, It should use memory stick and memory stick pro (And sandisk makes both). If you take a look on the sony website they make up to a 4GB memory card for your camera, although it costs a fortune. http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_ParametricSearch-Start;sid=YPxYPGJ1dg9YPCBbMiRSNy1l5UADgzmQNek=?sea rch_keyword=dscw1&selected_category_name=None And if you go on the Sandisk website, you can see they have released a whole new selection of sony memory cards including: Memory stick, memorystick pro and Memorystick Duo.

Here is a 512mb memory stick from sandisk: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?submit=Go&DEPA=0&CMP=OTC-Froogle&description=N82E16820191409 for $55 (not really that expensive)

Here is a 1gb memory stick made by sony : http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-191-232&depa=0 for $107

If you need to hold more than 512mb - 1GB you may want to consider a portable storage device. For ~$300 you can get a 20GB device

...for the info. I read another post with similar questions, and started checking out my local electronics stores on-line to check for prices. No, I don't need a ton of memory...1Gb at the most.

I just bought a Sandisk 512 MB Memory Stick Pro for $50 at Costco (20% off Sandisk Memory Cards from 3/14-3/20). It was $65-$18 plus tax . You can buy it online as well but shipping is ~$7

I also brought the memory stick pro from costco. I have a sony w-1, but it always give me a "Memory stick error" message on the camera's display when I plug in my 512 meg sandisk memory stick (SDMSV-512AX0501BE) Does anyone else has this problem?
