.........is the optical a tad bit slow from 1x thru 4x then does it seem to be faster 4x thru 12 when zooming in on a subject?. reason im asking is bec my fz20 fell of my bed onto my carpet and now im paranoid the zoom function is screwed up. it functions fine and zooms fine, just checking to make sure its a little bit slow from 1x optical to 4x when first zooming in

Mine does anyway but Im hoping its now normal - its also sometimes a bit slow at retracting the lens when you switch it off

Yes, what you are describing sounds normal. It does start out slow on the zooming and gets faster at the top end. It also does the same when zooming back in. its slower from 12x to about 4x then speeds up down to the 1x. No need to worry, but maybe you should keep a better eye, or hand, on the camera from now on :p

Mine also exhibits inconsistent zoom speeds.

But what I noticed today is that the image is lacking on wide open zoom shots. I'd say from 0X to maybe 2.5X the image (sharpness, detail ) is pretty weak. The sweet spot on my camera is from 4X to 11X as far as image quality (esp. sharpness) goes. Macro mode seems to help a bit for closeups but on wide, non-macro shots the image is pretty weak. Anyone else notice this?

Oh and one other thing: today I filled my KingMax 512MB SD card. The camera consistently says I can fit 204 photos at the highest quality/resolution .jpeg when I put the card in. But when I transfered the files to my computer, there were 286 files on the card (they're all .jpeg photos). Anyone else notice this?

I've noticed sharpness at 12x is a little soft but never on the lower end of the zoom range.

The pictures left indicater is an approximation and not a reliable indicater. The size of jpegs vary depending upon image details so accurate predictions are nearly impossible.
