Newbie looking for help!

Just got this camera...and am new to photography. I noted that the manual for the camera says that in almost every mode, I can use the 9 point AiAF Auto Selection system of focussing, and in P, Tv, Av, and M modes, I can also manually set the AF. I can get the large focussing brackets (what should be AiAF mode) in Auto, Portrait, Landscape and etc, but in the other "more manual modes" like P, Tv, etc, I can only manually set the AF. Pressing the Set button will alternate between the green AF center square and a white center square, but no big AiAF brackets can be selected.

Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken
I had the same problem the last days being unable to activate AiAF in P, Av, Tv. First I thought this was a mistake in the german translation of the manual. So today I called CANON Germany & they unveiled the mystery to me:
when you are switched to, e.g. "P" Mode, first press "SET" and let the square turn green & then use the black turning wheel next to the shutter release to select AiAF.

Bah, just shut off AiAF. It slows down focusing time. And alot of times it seemed to focus on objects that you don't want it to. Use the tried and true Centre AF.

Thanks guys for your post and especially Bladerunner for clearing that up. The manual is very unclear on this and I even called Canon HK and they couldn't figure it outi either. But I tried Bladerunner's method and it works. Very ill documented.

Thanks again
