Hi friends,
I have just bought a Fuji S7000 camera but got one thing to ask. Previously I was using Kodak DX3900 and I have found that my Kodak (3.1 MP) has a resolution of 230 (DPI) whereas my more expensive and more MP Fuji camera (6 to 12 MP) has only 72 DPI.

Does it mean my Kodak is better in a way and it would give better print quality or I am just being ignorant.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Because your computer screen can only display 72 dpi, most digital cameras are set up to display 72dpi. However the Resolution (6mp and 12mp interoplated on the Fuji 7000) remain unchanged by any changes in dpi. The resolution measurement (6mp and 12mp) is expressed in the horizontal and vertical pixel count.

Think of this way please, the dpi is a display measurement, whereas the resolution is a file size measurement. DPI relates only to display and to printing, it does NOT relate to resolution. The pixel count both in width and height, dictate the the resolution count.

Final proof of this essential difference is this: to get a BETTER quality print in a editing program such as Photoshop you can INCREASE the dpi number (for example from 72dpi to 200-300dpi) in an image WITHOUT affecting the resolution of a digital photo, and this increase in dpi makes a much better print. BECAUSE dpi relates only to display and printing.

I hope that helps.
