Nikon 3100 automatically shutting off

I recently sold my Nikon 3100, the buyer is saying that it keeps shutting off right away.

Has anyone witnessed this before? Is it caused by using standard batteries? It works great with an adapter. I recommended using NiMH batteries instead of standard alkaline.

Please let me know if you have any experience with this problem.
