Has anyone used the Nikon 70-300 F4-5.6D AF Zoom lense(Part #1928) on a D-70? B & H sells it for $99.95. I am concerned about the quality.

You mentioned that the lens is a 'D' lens. I believe the the $99.95 price relates to the 'G' lens. I dont have that but I did purchase the 70-300 f4-5.6 ED lens for $299.95 with a $50.00 rebate. I was more interested in quality and expect to take a lot of pictures at the 300 end of the lens. Several reviews indicated the ED would be a better choice. I took my first ohotos with the 70-300 ED and am real happy with it.

$99.95 = A G type of lens.

I have the 300mm G lens. I have used it for about a month and feel for the value its a decent choice. May look at a 200mm to get less bulk when hiking.

The $99 lens is a G lens. I have one and it is ok in a pinch. Just don't expect a miracle for $99. It works ok in the f8 to f16 range, but at 300mm tends to be a little soft. Back off to 250 at f8 or so and it works. Hey it is what it is. None of the 70-300 zooms are really great, but most are rated "good".

As you can see from the listing the 70-300 Sigma APO is way ahead of the pack for a bargain $199. I am adding this one to my list along with the Tamron 28-75 f2.8.

While not necessarily the "definative" reference, you may find this handy:

In 70-300 kin, Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Super Macro II is the best - both in term of sharpness and contrast. But if the price tag is the main concern, I would go for Tamron.

Because Nikon ask Tamron to produces 70-300mm lenses since years ago. Also 70-300ED too ;)
