I am a Canon dslr user but just got a call from my cousin. She wants a simple set up to get background blur when photographing her kids. Is thinking of a T3i and 50mm, but if there is a P&S that would work she would rather go that way.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Tell her to have a look at the Canon Powershot S95. It has a fast lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.0, so she could either use the portrait scene mode or the aperture priority mode to achieve background blur with this setting.

It's a great little camera at the top of Canon's compact range, and is presently available as low as $289 in the light of the imminent arrival of its replacement, the S100 (which will cost a lot more and take photos of almost the same image quality).
