Hi everyone. I just got the a95 and it looks fine. I dont know if anyone can help but here is my problem. When i take pictures with the flash everything is ok, but when i remove the flash, and try to take a picture, i push the button half way and always i see this icon on the bottom left of the lcd, it is the camera and two hands. Refering to the manual it is because my hands are shaking. But it is not correct since it does it even if it is standin on a hard surface. any ideas why this happens? i dont want to always use the flash while taking pictures, and it is getting frustrating.
oh yes, and when i dont use the flash the pictures come out very blurry then.
this is in auto mode.

thanks

The icon doesn't mean that your hands are shaking, only that shaking hands could blur the picture due to a slow shutter speed. If you're in auto mode with the flash disabled, the camera is going to use a much slower shutter speed to ensure a proper exposure. This could be the cause of your blur, even with the camera sitting on a surface. Try using the 2 sec. delay, and the blur may go away (assuming it's able to get a decent focus); it gives the camera a moment to settle after you've hit the shutter release.

i put the delay on even 3 secs but i always get the same result, blurry pictures. do i need to change the iso or something?

The reason you get that is because there probably isn't enough light for the average photographer to a picture at that shutter speed zoomed that much.

When you half press the shutter, there will be 2 infos that will appear at the bottom of the LCD, the first one is the time the shutter will remain open and the other is the aperture(the number is preceeded by a F). For the aperture, the smaller the aperture is(smallest is F2.8 for you) the more that comes it, thus the faster the shutter speed can be.

Now, for the shutter speed, normally, you shouldn't hand hold a shot which will be mad at a shutter speed slower than 1/focal length in mm(converted for a 35mm camera). What does that mean ? For a a shot at wide angle(38mm), you shouldn't take a picture hand held at a shutter lower then 1/38s. The same way, when you're at full telephoto(114mm), you shouldn't take your shot at a shutter any slower than 1/114s. And if you use the digital zoom, this rule still applies. So, why is there slower shutter than 1/38 on your camera ? Well, as you know, the flash is set to be used at 1/60s, so its not for the flash. The reason for sligtly slower is for people with steady hands. And the slower shutter is for those occasions where u use either a tripod or you put the camera on an inanimate surface to prevent any sort of shacking. Thus, this enables you to take a beautiful night shot of a city for example. But keep in mind that for a slower shutter speed to work, there must be some sort of light, using a slower shutter somewhere where there is absolutly no light won't do u any good.

Edit: Yes changing the ISO will mean that you will be able to use a shutter speed twice as fast, but it will add grains to your picture.
Using a 2sec shutter delay can also help you be more steady, so its not a bad idea.

Its because of low light. When there's low light, the camera in auto mode forces the shutter to stay open longer, resulting in a increased chance of camera shake.

All true about taking pictures in low light conditions. The issue I have is of all the cameras I've used in many light situations, the Canon A95 handles low light conditions poorly, in manual or automatic mode. The camera doesn't seem to adjust for a flash very well either. The Canon S10 our A95 replaced was GREAT in almost all lighting. Just point and click and you'd get a reasonable picture. Picture taking with the A95 has become a chore in all but outdoor and well lit areas. It's too bad-- there are soooo many cool features.

Suggestion: use a tripod and timer when possible.

That means that the shutter speed or aperature is not accurate for the lighting. Camera shake means that your photo will come out blurry.
