I'm totally new to this whole memory stick deal. I just bought a Sony DSC-W1. My cousin bought a Sony DSC-P100 and told me that you can only use Sony memory sticks for it. I was looking on Amazon at memory sticks, and there are so many different kinds: Lexar, Sony, Sandisk.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/697764/ref=br_bx_c_1_2/104-4792098-6721507
And the Sandisk and Lexar memory sticks are like half the price of the Sony ones. And even with the Sony memory sticks, there are the Pro, Duo, Pro Duo, and now I am utterly confused. What's the difference? Can I only get a Sony one? If not, then should I spend the extra money on the Sony one? In a nutshell, what memory stick should i get?!?! Thanks

The Sony W-1 can use BOTH the Pro sticks and the convention or earlier Memorysticks. The Lexar and Sandisk brands work easy as well as the Sony Brand Memorysticks, so save a little money.

Thanks for the information. Now I know which ones I can use. But which one would be the best to get? I heard that certain brands are faster than others. I also heard that memory sticks that use MagicGate can't use all the memory on the stick. (Ex: for the 512 MB memory stick, only about 460 MB can be used, 52 MB is used for MagicGate and hardware). I'd want something reasonably priced, that doesn't sacrifice quality. Thanks.

Make it simple. Stay away from the magicgate chips, they are too expensive. Go for the Lexar 256mb switchable chip. It is you best buy.

The DUO and pro one(both are deep blue) are faster than the old memory stick. And they are just a little expensive.
As for the pro one,i think sandisk 256M pro is great. The price is less than 70USD in china.
But the DUO one also has its benefit, though it is more expensive,it deserve the value thinking about its compatitable. You can use it in many mini devices produced by sony in recent years, like camcord,net-walkman,etc.And because there is a adapter in MS DUO packet, you can also use it with your DSC-w1.

I have just bought a SONY CyberShot DSC-W1 and looking for memory stick.
I found Sony MSX512S 512Mb Memory Stick "Pro" and Sandisk 512MB Memory Stick PRO almost same price which is better and faster for DSC-W1?
Are there any problems of compatibility with sandisk 512 pro?
Any advice please

For a while, Sony lagged behind SanDisk and Lexar in speed, but recent tests seem to indicate they're catching up.
You can purchase 512mb and 1gig Pro sticks for as low as $56 and $108 respectively, so consider that before buying. (Prices have been going down, down, down.) I think you'll do fine with a Pro stick from any of the three manufacturers, so I'd aim for the best price. DealMac is a great place to track the latest bargains, even if you're not Maccentric.

Just saw bhphotovideo.com.....
why are the lexar memory sticks so ridiculously high priced compared to Sandisk (512Mb Memeory Stick Pro for 220$ !! )? They even beat Sony in this respect!

Lexar is now the industry leader for fast memory sticks, out-performing Sandisk and even Sony impressively. But the best speeds are only usable on video recorders; for digital photography, a Pro stick will handle photos and even JPEG video flawlessly.
Just go for the best deal on a Pro stick.
