I'm leaving on a trip to japan on the 17th... thinking of picking up a new camera (currently considering the Canon G3 or Sony DSC-V3)... I'm wondering if any new options may be available for me by the time I leave... Or is it usually at the earliest April before anything is available, historically speaking?

Both cameras mentioned (I hope you mean Canon G6 by the way) will not replaced until Summer if at all.

Yeah, I figured that, since they were announced late summer last year. I'm just wondering if anything else similar might be available.

There may be replacements to the PowerShot Pro1 and the S1 IS if you are interested in those models. Sony should be updating its F828 with the F939 pretty soon...

I've heard from a pretty reliable source that a Pro1 update won't happen for a while... at least this source hasn't heard anything from his usual sources. I hope he's wrong...

The retailers are all "saying" otherwise. Many are discounting and selling off all their Pro1's and the ones that sold all theirs off and aren't carrying the product anymore. Some mainstream retailers like Best Buy have had it on perpetual "backorder" for months. There was even an indication on the Canon site that "implied" a discontinuation of the Pro1. Whatever this is, either the Pro1 is leaving for good or a replacement is coming.

Wow, I didn't know about the implied discontinuation... you have a link for that? Reading between the lines sure is fun. ;)
