I am researching digitals to use to photo (and take mini movie clips, that is why I am not interested in a SLR) of my kids at their swim meets and volleyball games. I know there is no digital that is great for these types of situations, but I am looking for the best choice in a digital to try to capture these photos. I am wondering what anybody thinks of the sony f828 for this type of shooting. Both the pool and VB court are indoors and you cannot always get as close as you would like to shoot the pics. Help...

Actually, there are. They are called digital SLR's, or more commonly dslr's. These digital cameras have the ability to increase ISO to the levels needed to attain high shutter speeds in low light. They can take amazingly good pics in situations like yours.
Since the 828's ISO goes up to 800, it probably has more of a chance of getting the shots you want than does most other cameras. That ISO is higher than most other p&s, most of which only go up to ISO400. However, this is only one f-stop smaller. It may work, but certainly could not be guaranteed of this. You should be able to get well-exposed shots, but you might not get shutter speeds high enough to completely freeze the action. In the end, you will probably need what is commonly used to get great shots in these situations - a dslr.

According to the specs, it says that the lens goes from f/2.0-2.8 between 28-200mm. That's pretty good by non-DSLR standards so this might just be your camera. I warn you though that it's VERY heavy. Try it out in the store before you consider buying it.
On the plus side, it has one of the best video modes available (still).

Sony F828 is pretty good, but its a bit dated. You should consider a Lumix FZ20
