View Full Version : Getting the hang of dof ?

A couple of photos of a slug in our garden. Took 15 different photos trying for both effects - all in focus and just the head - probaly only had 2 bad ones.
The second photo I do not think I had a chance to get it all in focus as even if I upped my ISO I could not get the dof required with a shutter speed that worked.

At that close of a distance you can't get everything in focus front to back. Still, the 2nd shot is the better one, I think.

Anthony, I like both. 2nd one the dof is more pronounced. Eye shots of these critters always makes it more interesting, although much more difficult unless you get that special moment when the subject cooperates :)

I think the first one shows more texture but I do prefer the second one.
Even with the dof I had one eye was out of focus on number 2!

When ever it raised up it was always looking the other way as if it knew I was there
Remembering that your DOF plane is a flat plane that gets thicker or thinner,
the first shot would of been more interesting in my opinion, with a thin DOF, to have just the slug's body in focus and the leaves behind and in front Out of focus.
