View Full Version : Why Hummingbirds?
Besides the obvious, why do people shoot Hummingbirds?
They're a little dufus looking, one hovering fuzzy little beast just like the next.
Or close-ups of ugly bugs? (Hell, even Butterflies are ugly close-up).

Why ?
For the challenge and fun of course ;)
It's also just about the best practice to hone your skills.
Their little chirp and the sound of their wings never fails to bring a smile to my face....

I think in particular hummingbirds are interesting because high-speed photography shows what can't been seen by the unaided eye.

Because they want to. Next question? :)

Why not?
As for close ups bring out a lot of details we normally can't see. That's photography. My best spider shot show that a tiny spider's legs look like lobsters. And I hate spiders.
Why do people shoot sports?
Why do people shoot weddings?
Why do people shoot landscapes?
Why do people shoot portraits?
Why do people shoot anything?

Why do trolls post flame-bait?
Why do trolls post flame-bait?
Because those like you who resort to the use of infantile words (as equally juvenile appellations) use words like "Troll" and "Flame-bait".
“Hummingbirds are ugly” being my foremost reason.
i bet he knows how lens aperture works though. :D

Seriously, y'all. Razr, I think you can see why the original post may be legitimately taken as trolling, even if you didn't mean it that way. So responding as you did isn't the most constructive. Instead you could say something like: "I'm not trolling; I'm really curious why people like to take pictures of things which I find ugly."

Based on his history, I'm pretty sure he DID mean it that way. And Razr, troll isn't an infantile word. It actually comes from the following definition:
Trolling is a method of fishing where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish, are drawn through the water...
It refers to the way people deliberately 'bait' people by posting comments designed to provoke a response on a forum, from a wide range of individuals, for no reason other than to attempt to wind people up. Try doing a bit of research before you insult people. :)

You're tired and so are you supposed private jokes ("jabs") at me.

Seriously, y'all. Razr, I think you can see why the original post may be legitimately taken as trolling,
The deliberate use of the word "Troll" in an attempt to provoke shows impatience-immaturity or worse, a running out of cogent words to describe another person one disagrees with.
So responding as you did isn't the most constructive. Instead you could say something like: "I'm not trolling; I'm really curious why people like to take pictures of things which I find ugly."
I asked why Hummingbirds, (birds who, in 99% of all images regarding them, make them look... scruffy).
Next: "Trolling" could also be said to be responding directly to another person in attempts to put words in their mouth:
defiantly, I press on: Hummingbirds are ugly and scruffy; no matter why a person shoots them.

Those people whom you defend so vigorously many times deserve to be spoken to in the same manner and tone they take when "baiting" anyone themselves.
I have the right to express my opinion, no matter that you say: "for no reason other than to attempt to wind people up.
First: you nor they know why I asked the OP observation.
Your own “piling on" answer (here) followed in the attack on me, who steadfastly proclaim my innocent but direct question about ugly birds.
Certainly I asked the OP question not to "wind people up". Certainly they (those who shoot Hummingbirds) ought to themselves have good answers for the direct question.
Instead, the smart-a$$ answers serve and served no purpose except to themselves provoke an intemperate response.

"Insult people"?
How, because I spoke my mind in the OP statement or because I (me-myself) think Hummingbirds are ugly & scruffy looking?
In defending Hummingbirds, not one person (including yourself) has made an argument in direct refutation of my OP opinion.
Instead, they-like you-have chosen to address me; the Hummingbird goes undefended.

Beauty, or ugliness for that matter, is in the eyes of the beholder, Razr.
But since when do people only shoot beautiful things? George Bush II was ugly but he made daily front pages around the world...
Beauty, or ugliness for that matter, is in the eyes of the beholder, Razr.
A purely philosophical outlook on "beauty": a Hippopotamus is "ugly" in the strictest sense of the word, though other Hippopotami may not think so. Some say “Blondes” are pretty though of course some look like death warmed over.
At every wedding many say the Bride is “beautiful” though any honest person in attendance would disagree with that assessment.
Hummingbirds, like cactus-are fuzzy and ugly (though some would insist that cactus too are “pretty”)…and we know that’s a lie.
But since when do people only shoot beautiful things? George Bush II was ugly but he made daily front pages around the world...
Bush was also stupid though many saw that as “charming”.

RAZR, if hired to take a wedding photo, would you walk away the moment you see the bride or the groom is ugly?
An 'ugly' thing can be a subject of interest sometimes. Such as an 'ugly' bride or groom.
To be honest while I don't think the hummies are as beautiful as the parrots I find them quite interesting - Their flight for instance. Which is why people shoot their photos.

Instead of debating the appearance of hummingbirds, can we get back to allowing this thread to be for sharing photos only? I will close it otherwise.
Thanks,
Jeff
