I am thinking of purchasing a powershot G6. I would like to be able to take pics of my kids at their swim meets and volleyball games. Lighting is often an issue as well as moving subjects. Ialso like to tke movie clips of them on my digital (right now I have a sonycybershot 3.2 megapixel).
Any thoughts on whether or not this camera would be suitable for these situations, and if not any suggestions for another camera? I would like to right around 700.00 or less. Thanks

i've heard some folks on these forums complain about the g6's low-light focusing abilities. i haven't experienced this much myself, but then again, i don't do a whole lot of low-light photography. if you're willing to use the manual controls i think you should be able to get some very good results.
the movie mode is kinda bleh... it's capable, but i would suggest looking at some digicams that can record at 30 fps for as long as the memory medium can hold. i think the g6 is a great camera, but for the situations you are suggesting, you may be able to find something more appropriate (do you really need the 7.1 megapixels? there are a number of less expensive alternatives that have better movie modes).
good luck!

For low light, I have heard Sony DSC-V3 does a good job. It does movies at 30FPS as well but that requires the Memory Stick DUO card (which are expensive). G6's movie mode isn't that great. So if you record something like a sports game with a G6, the movements will look choppy.
But I should mention that to me, DSC-V3's pictures look oversharp. I wouldn't buy it myself. But based on your requirements, I thought I would let you know about DSC-V3. Both G6 and V3 are around 7 MP and both cost about $599.99 at local stores (Circuit City / Best Buy).

Both the G6 and V3 are good cameras. I'm more biased towards Canon, but the G6 is a slightly better camera overall on the picture taking side. Digital Cameras really aren't meant to take movies, so while the Sony does have a superior movie mode, I'd strongly caution against using that as a major motive for getting that model.

Thats what I think as well. Thats why I mentioned in the previous post about DSC-V3 that I wouldn't buy one myself.

Actually, it takes a Memory Stick Pro. You can get a 1GB card for about $100 or $110.
I myself am considering either the G6 and the V3.
